why is the last mission called the maw?

It can only be speculated upon. But I would guess that it's named that because maw is another name for a mace, or weapon. And of course, the Pillar of Autumn was used basically as a weapon to destroy Halo, the Flood, and Covenant. Fair guess. What I always wondered, and many others was, why is the level Two Betrayals called Two Betrayals? Who betrayed anyone? I guess it could be surmised that Spark did. But who was the second person to betray? Something I remember the community has debated since the day I joined.

Good questions man.

  • 06.21.2009 12:57 PM PDT

I think you mean Maul as a substitute for mace.
Maw is usually used to describe the jaws of a large monster. Often times used with 'Gaping'.

No company that uses terms like, head-to-head, man-on-man, action-sack, and mancannon is homophobic.
I supposed that teabagging is.... what, a representation of a new form of colonoscopy?

Found this:
"The definition of a "maw" is "the throat, jaws, and gullet of a flesh-eating animal". This is a possible reference to either the Flood or the adage: "Victory from the jaws of defeat." It could also be reference to the fact that it takes place inside the Pillar of Autumn, just as the maw is the inside of a mouth or inside of a fish."

Maw may refer to: Mace (club), a weapon

I just took what I saw fit best given the context of the level.

Yeah, I'm going to go with Thanatos. It's already obvious the Pillar of Autumn is infested with everything that wants to kill you. Hence, it's a jaw, and you're heading for the throat.

  • 06.21.2009 6:07 PM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

I've always thought it was something about the jaws of a behemoth. Like the muzzle or whatever.

Perhaps Cortana betrayed you somehow?

I don't know but I do know one thing. Master Chief is responsible for everyone's death on that ring. Cortona says no one else made it. That's because chief BLEW UP THE RING, killing everyone.

That's what we suspected before Halo 2 was released. We thought that maybe in Halo 2 she would become rampant and betray Master Chief and the human race, especially after gaining so much information from being plugged into the Forerunner terminal. But that theory was proven wrong of course. So I'm still oblivious as to what it means exactly.

Maybe 343 Guilty Spark betrayed Master Chief, and Master Chief betrayed the human race for wanting to activate Halo before Cortana told him not to?

I dunno.

I think it has a deeper meaning then that. Perhaps not only did the Master Chief feel betrayed by Guilty Spark, but maybe Guilty Spark also felt betrayed by John's eventual lack of cooperation with his objectives. At the time they were both clueless: Spark didn't understand why John didn't know the ring would do what it was designed to do. And John didn't understand why Spark was acting like he already understood and knew everything behind his intentions. So maybe they both felt betrayed, thus "Two Betrayals." Just a theory but I think it's the best I've come up with to date. Anyone else?

Everyone was already dieing, and if he didn't do that, the flood was going to spread everywhere!
If he didn't do that we might have had flood come here! Would you like that? jk

Your source(wikipedia) started the very year that Combat Evolved made it to the shelves. How many years was the game in the making before wiki was concieved? Other than wiki I couldn't find any other source for maw as a weapon of any sort.

I agree with him. I always thought that would be the reason for the name's level.

I'm probably wrong on this, but I always thought Cortana was lying to Foehammer when you were in the elevator at the end. Hear me out:
Foehammer: What's going on...everything alright...
Cortana: Negative, we have a wildcat explosion...the engines must have sustained more damage than we'd thought.
I always thought that Cortana knew exactly what she was doing and that Foehammer wasn't in on the plan; they both knew the ship was massively damaged, but, the blow it all up thing was Cortana's concept alone.

Why would Cortana lie to Foehammer? I think the engines sustained more damage then she though like she said. Or maybe I don't get what you're saying.

I just always took it as Cortana & Chief's dirty little secret. Like, the Marines knew that the Pillar was badly damaged, but, the overload thing was something Cortana cooked up on her own. A desperate measure. So when Foehammer reported in, Corty kind of fibbed that she didn't know what was going on, but, to get us out of here, regardless.
The other side of the coin would be that Foehammer...(somehow) knew what was going on...was in on it the whole time.
I never thought that was the case, as you had previously heard Cortana contacting her; didn't happen on the wildcat part.
As for the lying - the plan was to kill everyone/everything on the ring, so, Foehammer may not have been hip to that. Could've been considered against protocols or something.

I see,. I suggest reading Halo: The Flood. The author gives a little insight to what the characters thought along side with side stories of the establishment of a Marine base, an assault of the Pillar of Autumn crash site before the Chief gets to it, and the final occupation of the damaged Truth and Reconciliation the Marines had as they attempted to escape the ring before it was destroyed. But were unsuccessful obviously.
