Subject: On A Pale 'Drone'

[Pictures/samples below]

This is an idea I have had for a while now, before Halo 3 was even a 'public' gem. That's right, ever since the level 'Cairo Station' (Halo 2) was played in front of my face, I have been wanting to see a Drone [Yanme'e], become more than just a 'green chew toy'. Ever since I first saw the pitiful bugs on Cairo Station, I asked myself, "Why can't I ride these suckers!?"

Halo 3 arrives, having my curious mouth shut over the years, I wonder if the Drones will make a come back and become a sort of 'air based Mongoose'. Approaching the Drones on 'Crow's nest', I am filled with hope! Though to my misfortune, I was never given the option to board the creature, or even ride it 'broke back'. You can even try it yourselves, holding RB near the blue winged creatures does nothing!

I began to break it all down though; just because the water on 'Valhalla' can sweep up the Spartan/Elite bodies during an intense game of multiplayer, doesn't mean the Drones can. Spartans/Elites are very heavy objects, with what their armor and all. So, it is an issue of weight I assume. Halo 2 and Halo 3 never had the ability to ride the Drones because of the sheer weight the playable characters hold.......

You are more than likely wondering what this has to do with Halo 3: ODST. It has everything to do with it! In Halo 3: ODST, you are an ODST rookie without any MJOLNIR armor, or Elite mandibles (Making you very light). Wondering if a Drone can actually support the weight of an ODST? Wonder no more. Shown below are images taken in-game Halo 3 of a Drone on 'Crow's Nest' carrying a marine. I am sure there is barely a weight difference between an ODST and a Marine.

So, in Halo: 3 ODST, do you you all think Drones should be the new 'above ground Mongoose'? I propose that when you encounter the Drones as the Rookie, you will be able to stun them with your SMG and then be able to put a makeshift UNSC saddle on the flying Drone's backs. The saddle/Drone combo would be very similar to Nintendo's 'Yoshi' and would be easy and simple to get on/off with. The Drones, once wrangled would enter 'Mount Mode', the ridable version of the majestic creature. The controls are irrelevant to this idea, and could easily mimic the controls of a 'Hornet', or a 'Mongoose'.

So, in Halo 3: ODST I think we should finally be able to ride the Drones! What say you, Bungie/ODST loving community?

I want ideas! (It is rather late (early I suppose), sorry for any spelling mistakes or grammar issues)

lol.

Although it would be fun to ride a Drone, steering just wouldn't be possible, and hanging from a giant bug that wants to kill you in the middle of a battle seems a little. . . Counter productive.

Sure, it'd be fun, just not feasible.

ALSO: Yoshi? 0_o?

Without me, it's just "Aweso".

That would be great moving around through the city, but how would you control them? They're sentient life forms so I'm assuming they'd tried to get you off. But will the Drones' anti-gravity generators be able to keep it afloat with all the added weight?

Drunk on Game Fuel maybe, otherwise no.

This is serious, wouldn't riding a Drone be SiCK?

Love your idea and how you referenced the marine getting picked up on Halo 3 and how fat...ahem!...heavy the spartans are with their MJOLINIR armour :D

That would be quite awesome, but didn't they already finish the game soooo isn't it too late for this now?

Seeing an ODST pull off their helmet screaming "YEEEEHAWWW" would be cool but how would it work in game though, they'd just fly away if you got too close and since your playing as an ODST you can't jump too high either .

  • 06.22.2009 5:19 AM PDT

Donuts > all other food

I'd think the game is finished by now. But this is the most wonderful idea I've seen on this forum so far.

It may be too late for this to be in ODST, but who knows? Maybe it'll be in Halo: Reach. (I am aware that you probably play as spartans in that game, but we know Bungie, they always have tricks up their sleeves) =]

I agree with you fully (as your research is quite extensive) on the capabiblities of a Drone being able the support the weight of a lightly armoured human. The evidence is irrefutable as well as your logic.

However, what material might be used as an effective saddle for these majestic creatures? Knowing the fact that they have extemely sensitive sensor suites, it might be difficult to find some form of material which does not cause discomfort nor harm to these most beautiful beasts.

More research is needed to determine bone structure (if any) and preffered couch type.

You say tomato; I say potato.

I am going to jump on a grunt's head in ODST in remembrance of this thread.

Alright, you seem to have put a lot of thought into this, and seem pretty serious. I'll play along.

Ahem...

HELL YES IT WOULD!

However, I'm sure I don't have to point out the logistical issues regarding the fact that you plan on mounting an enemy that is pretty intent on your general destruction. It isn't likely to co-operate with the whole saddle thing either, not accounting for the fact that you're going to have to find somewhere about your person to carry said saddle before use.

Also, "stun it with your SMG"? Previously, bullets have tended to go a little further than merely stunning a drone, but I see no reason why this new SMG won't have a tazer attachment.

You also don't seem to have considered how the drone is going to fit a Brute into it's mouth, let alone spit it out as a fireball.

So, while it would be cool, in conclusion there just seem to be too many issues with the technical side. However, consider this;

Rather than having a drone as rideable in Campaign, why not a seperate game mode where 4 players race drones around various Campaign maps?

Is this a joke thread?
I'm so confused...

But if this is serious, how could you control a Drone?

This is awesome, but what's to say there aren't new, undiscovered ways we could take this. ODST's have a full suit of armor and can support at least 15 minutes worth of oxygen without being connected to anywhere else (from Cole Protocol). Well Drones also have the capability to live in the hard vacuum of space.

So... What if instead of always riding down through a planet's atmosphere in an HEV, we could tame the drones and ride THEM!!!

You're like, the bee's knees: you have helped me out a LOT in the past and you're a genuinely nice guy, and you deserve all the best for the good you've done me and surely done others
Count Peter, you're one of the only people I respect on here. Not that that means much on a forum, but still.

huh, didnt realise ninjas were alowed to make such random threads.

Anyway, yeah i guess it would be fun to fly a drone......Id prefer to ride a grunt though ;)

Haters are going to hate.
Praisers are going to praise.

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

If Marcus Fenix could ride a reaver Master Chief sure as hell can ride a drone, Im with you! But it would be better in an adeventure focused game where you play as a grunt, that would be awesome!

Not a bad idea at all, maybe along with the saddle could be a chip the ODST can insert in the drones brain so that it does your bidding. just a thought...(the chip reduces the chance of the drone trying to kick you off)

why in gods name were you promoted

goddamnit cree what the hell

Well if you think about it, the ODSTs are lighter than Spartans and slightly heavier than Marines. So if the drone on Crow's Nest can pick up a marine, i see no problem with the drone being able to pick up Rookie or any of the rest of his squad members.

hhmmm.....

possible? probably not

awesome? completely

I think steering would be fine, but maybe the drone might need a bit more persuasion? Maybe a little treat/cookie? All things aside, I just think the idea isn't something Bungie would implement. Who knows, maybe they might, but I think it may be just too late in the production of the game to put this into the game. Hey, it might be up in the dark forests of their hairy arms, tucked under their sleeves with a bunch of other juicy tidbits, but the chances are just leaning a bit out of your favor, unfortunately.

I like it though!

And yes that would be filthy

New Flood

Only if you could have a second player able to board, in the way that you can have a gunner on the mongoose, to operate the picnic table.
