Basically, the Covie B*stards slipped a ton of landing craft passed the oribatal defenses, by jumping a pair of frigates into the space between planet and defense, those ships got blown to bits, but they launched the hundreds of thousands of landing craft. those landing craft knocked out the ground based power for the Super MAC's in space, the hoes blasted them to slag and burned up Reach.
What he said. To the OP, my short answer would be "read The Fall of Reach already". Though a bit tedious and even boring at times, it details the origin of the Spartan IIs as well as the siege and fall of Reach. I do think though that having the actual MAC power generators on the ground -- so we had huge amounts of power transmitted...wirelessly? -- instead of in a more sensible location like, I dunno, deep inside each station was a rather weak plot device that all but ensured the planet's fall. Remember Halo 2? The Covies had to board the Earth MAC stations in order to disable them. If Reach had something like a prototype or rudimentary planetary energy shield to prevent space bombardment (like the one in the sixth Halo Wars mission; the UNSC could actually have developed one from years of studying that one plus all other Covenant shield technology) then the Covie desperate gambit to get ground troops in would've made the planetside defense plot more logical. Too bad Nylund didn't think of that one, eh? ;)
