One of the very few things we have as far as info is the title picture released along with the announcement. The picture is very ambiguous, but i think that it's safe to assume that these are the SPARTANs that assisted in the Battle of Reach.

There are many notable differences between said SPARTANs and any we have encountered before (well, there's only one we've encountered in the games really), including, but not limited to; armor (presumed to be Mark IV), size, possible gender, and certain weapons (notably the large gun in the hand of the very large SPARTAN on the far left and what appears to be a knife in the hand of the second SPARTAN from the right).

As I have not read The Fall of Reach and have only viewed synopses, I am not 100% familiar with any of these characters, and so any definite light that could be shed on that would be appreciated.

Also, is it possible that Bungie would incorporate a knife into Reach's gameplay? It would be canonical (Frederick-104 is noted as very skilled with combat knives), and I would very much like to see this included in Reach, possibly as a less effective human alternative to a Covenant energy sword. I would think a SPARTAN could easily take down a non-shielded opponent with this weapon, and it never runs out of charge, unlike an energy sword.

Maybe in gameplay, it only works against grunts and jackals?

A knife would only be so usefull against an enemy as strong or stronger than you that has an energy shield. Not to mention against a certain ape it would be absolutely useless. Besides I would rather be stabbed than hit with a wrecking ball, AKA Master Chiefs fist.

  • 06.23.2009 1:00 AM PDT

yea.. let the spartans pull out that dagger and lunge 5 feet with it, instantly killing the guy!!

its a good idea, just need to change th weapon a bit.

It isn't our shiznit anymore.

Well, Bungie has in some way incorporated the knife in Halo 3. If you look at the CQB chest armor, there is a knife attached to it that you can not use. But I think the knife could be used in an execution move for assassinations (instead of just punching them) by downing their shields from behind one second and jabbing the knife in the back of their neck or slitting the throat (that method can be used on elites and brutes too).

Forge didn't kill the Arbiter with the knife, he stabbed him in the side of his jaw which was unarmoured which caught him off guard, he then picked up the Arbiters energy sword and stabbed him through the chest.

Um...Combat Knife against energy swords? Epic fail? Combat knife against a squad of aliens shooting Plasma at you? epic fail again? Combat knife against Scarab? Extreme epic fail?

  • 06.23.2009 6:01 AM PDT

i think reach is going to be a more of a squad based halo. its really one of the only places they can take the seires and keep it new and interesting. spartans are disgustingly out numbered on reach they only way to survie and make any real progress would be to move in a squad format and sneek . so i think we are going to see a much different sort of game where stealth and carefully using the spartans in your squad for the given situation. kinda like that jericho game ( except it wont suck) i had heard a while ago when we were all waitin for halo 3 to drop that they wanted to try to take the game i a different direction, make you sneek more and not just throw yourself out there against tons of covies. they were even talking about giving the chief a knife at one point. and i think they are going to do all these things in reach. i think they will have a feature where the press of a button you can chose between your squad members and use whichever one you need to for the situation. you can see the outlines of the characters on the poster of the game. a sniper, heavy guns, CQB, looks to be like an all around spartan more like chief, and the other in the poster maybe a demo spartan, driver spartan? any thoughts ?

It would be cool to use a knife in online multiplayer so either the energy sword or knife can be used but they do the same amount of damage and things like that I would just like a different look

  • 06.23.2009 6:44 AM PDT

Spartans don't use knives in any of the Halo books...atleast the ones that I've read and those are: The Fall of Reach, The Flood, First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx,The Cole Protocol (and Contact Harvest but there aren't any spartans there)
So because of these books I don't think it's going to be in the game.

they should add those plasma knives the jackals have from the books

the plasma knives are described as the same round a needler uses it would be bad ass to stick that into some one and watch it explode

Shields don't work against slow moving objects like rocks, punches or knifes.

  • 06.24.2009 5:20 AM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Yes, but it wouldn't be very realistic. You've got to think that an advanced sheilding system would be able to take and break a knife blow.

  • 06.24.2009 5:28 AM PDT

Well its more advanced than your giving credit for. i'm sorry your argument just sucks.
think about it. If shields worked against slow moving objects your would destroy anything you touch. this includes weapons, vehicles, seats the ground.

how do you think melee damage and assassinations work? i would think a heavy blade could kick more ass than a blunt fist

Look... I'm on bungiepedia!

It wouldn't be the sword equivalent. The sword is powerful. The knife... is a knife. Also, Fred wasn't noted for being skilled with a knife particularly, he just was fumbling around with his, but it was noted by Nylund that the presence of a knife-wielding Spartan (not specifically Fred) was usually accompanied by numerous dead bodies.

I think it could be cool for SP to slice up some Grunts, but it couldn't really do much damage to another Spartan/Elite... I doubt someone would fill a weapon slot to pick one up.

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

The Arbiter didn't have shields, nor did he stab the armor, either way, both fights in that cutscene were BS, and would never have happened.

Only the ones used by the sentinels on Onyx. Spartans and Elites use different shields

Melee damage in Halo 3 is grossly over-exaggerated.
