In an interview Joesph Staten himself said that the evens of the books are mostly canon, but if they ever need to change anything they will. For all we know they will retcon the entire story of FoR/First strike.

Because the books and the games have always entwined with each other? To mess with the books would creat more problems. The fact that they are brilliant at filling the gaps in with detail. They will change the minor details, but not the whole plot.Edit- just remembered. I don't assume it's going to be a retelling of the events in the book. I do assume it's not going to contradict the events in the book.I think most people believe the same thing.

I doubt it's going to follow the events of the novels exactly. That would not make for a fun game; Fred and the others in CASTLE base had very short missions which would not make for fun combat. Delta were crippled in the fall, so we wont be hobbling around the entire time as them. Gamma only had 3 members, none of them -259 or -320, not the 5 as depicted in the above banner. We will probably play as members from Team Beta. Their stories are almost entirely untold; bungie would simply be giving us a parallel perspective on the battle of Reach, still having elements from the novels, but mainly it would be a new story. That's what I hope for, anyway.
I think it will be canon with the books. The books were written by the game's writers. That means the guys who wrote the story for Halo 1, 2, and 3 wrote the books. Granted they each wrote a different one, but they are still canon and official. Halo: Reach in my humble opinion will follow the events of Fall of Reach. You can tell by the way they advertise it. Its not called Halo: Fall of Reach because that is the book. They call it Halo: Reach and say that it will fall 2010. All we know for sure is at the end the planet will fall.
As "Drops" for ODST refers to the titular characters dropping to the surface in their HEVs, I think that "Falls" for REACH refers to the fall of the Spartans from their Pelican to the surface of Reach. [Edited on 06.23.2009 9:53 AM PDT]

I do believe you mean Reach.I really wouldn't bother me for the new game to follow the story of the books. They are really interesting.[Edited on 06.23.2009 9:49 AM PDT]

I agree they always go together with the books. But what I think Staten means it more like, when lets say Polowski, Johnson, and Chief are coming back from the drop ship in the covenant ship to go back to the bridge they don't have any enemy encounters. In the game you would actually run into Elites and such still left on the ship so it isnt just like a lame game running from place to place. pretty much just one big cut scene lol

Because every game and book so far have referenced each other in some way or another. Also if they didn't stick to their own canon there'd be continuity errors - errors which would increase the more they retconned previous works. This doesn't mean, however, that we will be playing out the stories of characters whihc we have already read about in the novels. Beta team from First Strike for example are unnamed as of now meaning there is a possible storyline to follow there. Personally I think that MLG Cheehwawa has the right ideas in this thread.[Edited on 06.23.2009 10:26 AM PDT]
