Bungie said recently that they were working on three projects: Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach and another unannounced game. It's good to move on to new things, but I think Halo still has some hope. It's highly unlikely that they will, but I don't want to see Bungie wrecking up a brand new game.
I think that if they stick to Halo, they have a good chance at being successful. As I said, it's good to move on to new things. I'm neutral on this; if Bungie makes a non-Halo game, I'm sure they'll know how get it right. I love Halo and would be happy if they decided to make another game set in the Halo universe.
The hard thing with staying to the same property for too long is that when they are released so consistently, and known for their MP moreso than their campaign, peoples expectations start to bring the game down.
This isn't so much an issue of right or wrong, but you cannot keep people feeling a new experience in the same format for too long, something new needs to happen. The Metal Gear games, Mario games, Zelda games, Metroid Games, Final Fantasy games, any property that has been around for long have all had to make drastic changes to their gameplay and occaisionally to their game formula, in order to keep things fresh and interesting.
Personally i'm hoping for Bungie to come out with a new IP, but I have no problem with more Halo as long as it's done right. As a fan of the campaign more than the MP, I would prefer them to continually release great, story driven games, in different formats. But the mainstream expectation is to deliver another "groundbreaking" FPS, and there isn't much ground left to break in that field.
