I am majoring in industrial design at my chosen college, and was wondering...Is there a place in game design for an industrial designer? Given that I have a good enough portfolio, is it possible to get a job at a high-profile company such as bungie with no computer programming knowledge, but one hell of a design-friendly creative mind? I'm sure I could be usefull in designing anything from complex and functional futeristic opening doors to advanced ergonometry for a new rifle.

What do you guys think?

Just saying "I'd be a good game designer" won't cut it, as that's what everyone says. Anyone that actually hopes to go from no industry experience to game designer for a AAA developer like Bungie is dreaming, really.

I'd look at some companys' websites, such as here, scan for openings on job listings, and enquire as to what it would take to look attractive and get a job. For some reason "level designer" comes to mind for you. Unfortunately, the barnstorming days of game developement are all but gone for the most part. Many of the bungie job listings demand ~2 years of prior industry work with other companies, as well as being well versed in the industry tools (not a programmer per se, but other tools common to the grade such as GMAX studio). Its amazing to see what kind of credentials is required these days to make a developement team! Or disheartening, however you want to look at it. Defintely not a casual decision though, but something that requires a lot of work, education, and effort.

Shouldn't it be "an AAA"?
