Hi everyone,
We are readying the release of a 1.07 patch for Halo PC to address a networking vulnerability which could allow a malicious user to cause the game to hang on the server. There are no reports of this exploit being used "in the wild".
The new game client will be backwards-compatible with the 1.06 server, so you will still have a full list of servers to play on while people update their dedicated servers. The old client, however, will not work with the *new* server.
1.07 will be released as an auto-update. 1.06 will be able to auto-patch, but anyone still on 1.05 will still need to follow the instructions in this thread.
And just a side note, in response to concerns posted here that 1.06 caused new latency or network problems: The recent patch builds have addressed small bugs in the handling of bad (hacked) packets, and make no difference in everyday operation. It is my firm belief that the occasional reports of latency introduced by the patch are just coincidental, due to the fact that a certain percentage of any group of gamers will have a laggy connection at a given time, and for the people whose connections are laggy on or around a patch day, there could seem to be a correlation. I'm confident it's just coincidence, and encourage everyone to keep current with patches.
Thanks!
UPDATE
The patch is now live. You can get the new dedicated server from here
or manually download the client patch from here.
The Halo CE patch will be made available in a couple days. Stay tuned.
Update, 5-25-05 - Gearbox has signed off on the Halo CE version of the patch, which is currently being hosted at the affiliate/fan-site located here. If you come across the patch at various file mirrors and want to verify you have the right software, the authentic patch is codesigned by "Gearbox Software". We're investigating enabling this patch for auto-update; stay tuned.
