Hi everyone,

We are readying the release of a 1.07 patch for Halo PC to address a networking vulnerability which could allow a malicious user to cause the game to hang on the server. There are no reports of this exploit being used "in the wild".

The new game client will be backwards-compatible with the 1.06 server, so you will still have a full list of servers to play on while people update their dedicated servers. The old client, however, will not work with the *new* server.

1.07 will be released as an auto-update. 1.06 will be able to auto-patch, but anyone still on 1.05 will still need to follow the instructions in this thread.

And just a side note, in response to concerns posted here that 1.06 caused new latency or network problems: The recent patch builds have addressed small bugs in the handling of bad (hacked) packets, and make no difference in everyday operation. It is my firm belief that the occasional reports of latency introduced by the patch are just coincidental, due to the fact that a certain percentage of any group of gamers will have a laggy connection at a given time, and for the people whose connections are laggy on or around a patch day, there could seem to be a correlation. I'm confident it's just coincidence, and encourage everyone to keep current with patches.

Thanks!

UPDATE
The patch is now live. You can get the new dedicated server from here
or manually download the client patch from here.

The Halo CE patch will be made available in a couple days. Stay tuned.

Update, 5-25-05 - Gearbox has signed off on the Halo CE version of the patch, which is currently being hosted at the affiliate/fan-site located here. If you come across the patch at various file mirrors and want to verify you have the right software, the authentic patch is codesigned by "Gearbox Software". We're investigating enabling this patch for auto-update; stay tuned.

Oh my god, this is what happens when i miss a day at the forum... Totally awesome, it relieves me, and I'm sure the entire community to hear that Gearbox still supports us Halo PC players, 1.07 bring it on!

On a side note I guess this would be the ideal time to mention the recurring latency problems that have plagued many users of Halo PC for years. I believe as you said in your post that version 1.07 WILL address some of these problems, but will it improve overall latency problems dealing with host to player connections? (i.e the host always has a very small ping with hardly any lag, while the players who join almost always experience a higher ping, as well as decreased responsiveness resulting from lag.)

except like 1.06, this patch does fixes something that nobody knows about. How about all the hacks and map mods out there that is ruining the halo competition? can't you do anything to prevent that? how about the netcode? we need more than just a hotfix... plz a real dream would be fixing all those mentioned above. do THAT for us bungie, and the halo community will be grateful.

this patch will be as noticeable as the last... hotfixes aren't "world changing" Us as halo PC players will probably not even tell the difference. what bungie needs to do is realize the hacks and mods (map mods) ou thtere that ruin the competition left in halo. Fixing hacks, netcode, lag, is more important IMO than a server crashing down (which rarely happens)

Sorry if I wasn't clear. This patch does not help or hurt latency, nor have the several previous patches. It's just a security hotfix.

And to answer the other question I've been getting: I have provided Gearbox with source and binary for Halo CE 1.07, for them to review my fix, test as needed, and release. Gearbox is busy at E3 this week, and I expect that they will be looking at the fix early next week. If they let me know that they don't immediately have time to take a look, I will enlist a few volunteers to beta the CE fix. Halo CE *will* receive this patch to get up to date with hotfixes.

i'm not saying that i'm ungrateful for the little (but good) that will be done with the new patch, but there could have been one other thing to be fixed.

1) tkers. They tk a few times, quit, then come back to reset their tk points and not get penalized. Servers, especially the bungie ctf servers, should keep track of a player's tk points, even after they leave.

hope you might include something to address the problem.

Who care about hacking. Hacker find that it's more fun to play halo then hack. (if you betray him or cheat he will hack into your computer so be good).

do you realize there are 50 people playing Custom Edition? publicly releasing a patch such as this one is a mistake. Not only do you prompt halo newbies to get e-gasms, but u also disappoint the veterans of halo when you say "HEY ANOTHER HOTFIX, LIKE 1.06" that changed nothing appreciable.

props for trying though....

Can't you folks at Bungie put in a tad more time and make a patch that will merge PC and CE, or make CE a necessary download? The problem with CE is that not enough PC players know about it. And the few that are intrigued, play a game and realize there are too little people. I've tried posting in the forums to make ppl aware, but you guys won't even sticky a Halo CE thread. CE is a great thing, but it is dying because people don't know about it!
