Well actually the numbers are backwards.
Spartan 2 = 117
Spartan 3 = 259
Read the books, it's a tactic used to make the enemy think theres more groups of Spartans than there actually are. Creating confusin and paranoia.
No. Spartan-IIIs identify themselves with their Company letter prior to their conscription number. He would have identified himself as Sierra-G259 if that were the case. Additionally, the Spartan-III project was a highly classified project, classified against the knowledge of many ONI Section Three members, even, as Halsey had a hell of a hard time figuring out what the hell it was for herself, and was incredibly surprised that even after their massive operations, they were kept in such secrecy.
The idea of Spartan-IIIs suddenly making open contact with other UNSC forces in such a fashion as -259 did in the teaser completely contradicts this.
Lastly, Gamma Company, the only remaining Company of Spartan-IIIs, are a group of 12-15 year-olds who were only recently going through their rapidly-induced puberty progression, which means that even at the end of it, they wouldn't sound like thirty year-old men and women.
It is likely that -259 and -320 are Spartan-II soldiers, and here is an explanation as to why:
-There are still a handful of Spartans whose callsign numbers have not been revealed. It is very plausible that when Dr. Halsey began the Spartan-II project and started looking for possible candidates, that she began with a larger pool of subjects before the genetic testing began to pinpoint the first whittled number of '150'. If this is the case, and subject numbers were applied to each subject upon consideration (which makes a hell of a lot of sense), then it easily explains the existence of Spartans from Master Chief's class with conscription numbers higher than '150'.
In the end, we do not know who or what these Spartans are, but in all likelihood... they will not be Spartan-IIIs.
