Bridge of the UNSC Halberd. In orbit above Jalef
Captain Walker assessed the battle situation again. There was a Covenant Cruiser, accompanied by several frigates orbiting the planet. It had been over ten minutes since either side attacked. Plasma torpedoes had scattered the UNSC fleet after the las attack, then everything stopped. The Covenant ships just hung in high orbit, unmoving.

A disembodied voice spoke in the bridge. "MAC cannon charged, sir. Are we going to fire?"

It was the Halberd's AI, Shadow.

"Negative, not until we know what they are doing."

The bride fell silent again, and Walker continued to view the Covenant ships. He saw movement in the distance.

"Lieutenant, show me a closer image of those ships."

The screen zoomed in, and Walker saw what they Covenant was waiting for. A Carrier, accompanied by a prowler and more frigates, was slowly moving towards the already overpowered Covenant fleet.

"Open a fleet wide com-link, now!" He ordered.

"Opened, sir" the Lieutenant said.

"This is Captain Walker of the UNSC Halberd. Covenant reinforcements are on the way. We need to act now."

Admiral Wofen, who was currently commanding the UNSC Carrier in the fleet, spoke back. "Understood. We can't outrun them; our only choice is to fight."

"Sir. Yes, sir," Walker said, as he closed the link. "Shadow, get White Team to the hangars, now."
****

Spartan 054, Hector, entered the hangars. Three Hornets, modified for use in high orbit, were being prepared. Marcus stepped in after him.

"These our rides?" He asked.

"Looks like it." Hector Replied.

A screen suspended on the wall activated, and Walker's face appeared. Hector and Marcus, shortly followed by the other two members of White Team, walked up to the screen.

"Orders, sir?" Hector asked.

"You and a squad of ODSTs will be infiltrating that Covenant cruiser, and destroying it. Stored in those Hornets are six nuclear warheads. You will enter the cruiser through the hangar, and place the warheads as you see fit. After placing them, you will exit the ship via the hornets, and receive your next mission."

The Spartans began climbing into the passenger sides of the Hornets when Walker Spoke again.

"Hector, can you pull this mission off?"

Hector Grabbed the support hold and looked at the screen.
"No problem"

The Hornets took began their flight.

Chapter 2
High orbit, above Jalef.

The Hornets sped across the empty space between the opposing fleets, quickly closing the distance. Hector heard Marcus over the Team-Comm.

"So, where are we going to plant these bombs? It won't do much if we don't spread them out."

Duncan's voice cut in. "We need to take out the vital systems," He said. "If we destroy the life support, the engines, and bridge, it will be crippled if it survives the blast."

"How do we find our way around that thing?" and ODST asked.

"There is a terminal in the hangar," Duncan said. "through there we can. . ."

Duncan was cut off by a loud blast. A MAC round flew overhead and slammed into the covenant cruiser. The shields flickered but held. The MAC round was followed by a barrage of Archer missiles. This time, the shields fell.

They Hornets took the chance and flew into the hangar. As soon as they passed the protective energy barrier, the pilots launched missiles. The sudden attack caught the Cruiser's crew off guard. Missiles plowed into banshees and phantoms, destroying all the air craft in a fiery explosion.

Before the smoke was cleared, White Team jumped out of the Hornets. Hector raised is MA2B and scanned the hangar. The room had two floors. The bottom floor, the one White Team Now stood on, appeared to be for refueling and repairing ships. The upper floor was comprised of a thin catwalk -only big enough for two or three Spartans to walk shoulder-to-shoulder- which girded three of the four walls, and another cat walk that sprouted in the center of the room.

Sever Grunts and Jackals stood on this center cat walk, staring in shock as the Phantom they were about to board burned down. Hector opened fire. Seconds later, the cat walk was empty. A plasma bolt flew towards Hector. He jumped out of it's path and took cover behind a burning chunk of Phantom. His heads up display showed Spartan 113, Ashley, firing from behind cover, Spartan 070, Duncan, fighting an Elite in hand-to-hand combat, and Spartan 011, Marcus, firing his MA2B into a squad of Grunts.

His team survived the entry.

Hector then turned his attention to the ODST squad. All three Hornets had an ODST pilot, two of the hornets carried White Team, the other carried two ODSTs. The Hornets were still landing. White Team caused enough damage to temporarily distract the Covenant forces in the hangar.

While the ODSTs dismounted from the Hornet's passenger sides, Hector checked to see who had fires the plasma at him. He peeked over the shrapnel he was using as cover and saw a Jackal standing in front of him, armed with a Plasma Pistol and an Energy Shield. He drew his M6D pistol. One shot placed in the small hole at the shields side would kill his enemy.

Hector hurdled over the Phantom shard and charged the lone Jackal. He waited for the creature to fire first.

It did.

A fully charged plasma burst rushed towards him. Hector hit the floor and rolled to his left. The plasma flew past where he had just been standing. Hector finished the roll, landing in his feet, and fired at the Jackal. The creature flinched, then fell to the ground. A perfect shot.

"All clear over here." Ashley said over Team-Comm.

"Same here." Hector replied. "Duncan, find that terminal."

As Duncan located the terminal and began deciphering the Covenant characters on the key pad, Hector surveyed the room again. He noticed the heavy sliding doors; four on top, four on bottom.

"Form a defensive position around Duncan!" he ordered, and moments later the Spartans and ODSTs formed a semi-circle around Duncan.

"Just one more minute," Duncan said. "Ive got the map, i just have to find out what it all says."

One of the doors close to the team slid open. Everyone turned towards the door and raised their guns. A Covenant engineer floated into the hangar. It paused for a moment to look at the team, then floated towards a pile of rubble that was once a Banshee and set to work.

"Leave it." Hector said. "Marcus, arm a warhead and place it somewhere out of sght."

Marcus walked to the closest Hornet and removed a warhead. He carried it over to a large mass or rubble and buried it.

"Armed." He said. "Let's get the rest of these out and we can start arming them."

By the time the five remaining bombs were placed in large backpacks which were carried by the Spartans, Duncan had finished his work. He uploaded the map to everyone Heads Up Display.

"From here" Duncan explained, "we can get to the life support mainframe. After arming one there, access tunnels can take us close enough to the engines to arm one, and then straight to the bridge."

The Spartans heaved the warheads onto their shoulders.

"Lets get stared." Ashley said.

Chapter three.
Hangars of the Covenant Cruiser.

The team of ODSTs and Spartans walked to one of the doors.

"This hall should take us to the Life Support systems." Duncan explained. He touched the door and it slid open. White Team raised their weapons and scanned the hall. No covenant troops were present.

They started down the hall, Hector took point, followed by White Team, then the ODSTs. After a short walk they came to a corner. The turn took them up a ramp to another hall. This one contained three Jackals.

Hector fired at the lead Jackal. Ashley and Marcus stepped out from behind him and fired at the others. Duncan dropped to his knee and aimed his sniper. The Jackals raised their shields and fired plasma pistols though the slits. Their shields blocked and deflected the Spartan's fire. While they were distracted, Duncan aimed took aim and fired. The sniper bullet flew straight through the firing-slit in the shield. It crashed through the plasma pistol, straight in to the Head of the Jackal aiming with it.

Duncan's second shot clipped the lead Jackal's shield. The force through the Jackal off balance. Hector took the chance and unloaded the remaining half of his clip into the Jackal. Marcus stood facing the last Jackal. He jumped to the side and took cover in a small indent in the wall, barely escaping the plasma blast aimed at him. He quickly swapped his MA2B for his BR 55 and jumped back into the fight. His first burst of fire his the Jackals foot. In it's pain, the creature lowered it's energy shield. Marcus's second burst struck the Jackal directly in the head, killing it instantly.

"All clear" Marcus said through the Team-Comm.

They continued down the hall. After three more ramps, they reached another door. "Take positions," Hector said calmly. "Ashley, take left. Marcus, right. Duncan, target any officers and eliminate them." He turned to the ODSTs. "Stay behind us, and give support fire." Three white lights winked on his Heads Up Display, and the ODSTs replied "Sir, yes sir!" in unison. Hector checked his magazine. It was full. He touched the door.

As it slid open, all the Covenant troops in the room turned and faced them. Two Elites sat at the monitors, making sure the life support was operating as it should. Several Engineers floated around, checking for any damage. Three Jackals stood to the side of the room, apparently on guard duty. Five Grunts waited by the Elites, ready to do whatever their commanding officers wished.

The first sound was the bang of a sniper rifle. An Elite's head exploded. Suddenly the other Elite shouted and jumped out of his chair and jumped behind cover. The Jackals rushed forward and began firing, using their shields to protect themselves and the surviving Elite. Two Grunts screamed, the others raised their weapons and charged, knowing that a worse fate then death by the enemy awaited cowards.

Hector and Marcus quickly eliminated the Grunts with short controlled bursts. They then turned their attention to the Jackals. Ashley, Duncan, and the ODSTs had already killed two of them. Their combined fire dropped the remaining Jackal's shields, then tore through it's body. A door slid open to their right. Two more jackals and a squad of Grunts entered.

"You handle the reinforcements!" Hector shouted. "I'll take out that Elite."

Again, three white lights flashed on his Heads Up Display.

Hector charged the Elite. It quickly fired at him, then jumped away. Hector sidestepped the plasma bolts, then raised his rifle and fired. Several shots clipped the Elite, but it's energy shields absorbed the hits. It ran out of Hector's line of sight again, then fired from behind cover. Hector ducked, then crept closer to the monitor it was using as cover. He reached the monitor, then quickly hurdled it and fired at the Elite. It evaded the attack again, firing as it jumped away from Hector. The Elite's tactics were too predictable. It jumped back and crouched, as Hector expected, right next to the grenade he had dropped.

The frag exploded, dropping the Elite's energy shields. The alien roared in pain. Hector raised his MA2B and fired. The Elite shook as bullets tore through it, then fell to the floor. Hector walked to the creature and retrieved it's weapons. A plasma rifle, and two plasma grenades. Those would be useful.

Hector returned to White Team. Ashley and Marcus were scavenging through the dead bodies, looking for weapons and equipment. Duncan was arming a warhead behind the main life support terminal. All of the ODSTs had survived, although one had taken a shot to the arm. His armor was scorched, but luckily, had not been punctured.

"Duncan," Hector asked, "how many warheads do we need to plant by the engines?"

"One should do it, but two to be sure."

"And if we plant one in the bridge, we'll have an extra." Marcus said. "What do we do with that?"

Ashley grabbed a warhead. "I have an idea." She said. She walked over two one of the Engineers, which still floated around checking the life support systems as if the entire crew and not just bee slaughtered.

Ashley handed the Engineer the warhead. "Here you go, little guy."

"Why give it to him?" Marcus asked.

Hector answered his question "From what we know of these things, all they do is repair things. It will float all over the ship looking for something to do. Basically, it will carry this bomb to some major system when it tries to fix it. Come on, we need to hurry up."

They walked over to a hatch on the wall. Duncan ripped it off with ease. "This is the access tunnel," he said. "We are taking it to the engines, then straight to the bridge."

The tunnel's were not large. They were made for Grunts and Engineers. It was just tall enough for the Spartans, but it was made to allow two lines of Grunts to walk at the same time. It was wide enough to give them breathing room; enough room to arm a warhead.

They followed the tunnels for a while, then Duncan led them to another tunnel. This one took them up. They climbed up ladders until Duncan stopped them. "This is as close to the Engines as we are going to get." He said. He took a warhead, armed it, then attached it to the wall.

Finally they reached the path to the bridge. Hector ripped open another access hatch, then stepped into the hall. Two Jackals were stationed outside the bridge door. Hector grabbed the closes alien, snapped it's arm, then threw it at the other. They crashed into each other and fell to the floor. Hector walked over to the strugling Jackals and drew his M6D pistol. Two quick shots ended both their lives.

White Team and the ODSTs climbed out of the tunnel and walked to the door. "Same positions." Hector said. The team made the formation again, then Hector opened the door. The bridge was armed much more than the last room. The Shipmaster sat in his chair, an Elite guard stood at each side of him. Two other elites were on the bridge, Hector guessed they were weapons and navigation officers. A hunter stood at each end of the room, guarding the door.

Duncan fired at the Shipmaster. The Elite tried to evade the bullet by jumping out of the chair. The bullet hit the Shipmaster's shoulder, dropping his shields. The Elite guards turned and fired. White Team rolled out of the spray of plasma. The ODSTs dived away as well. Hector tossed a plasma grenade. The grenade collided with the guard on the right. Hector shouted "Fall back!"

White Team jumped out of the room, back into the hall. Three ODSTs followed, the other lay on the floor, charred by plasma. The Hunters fired. The doors closed just in time to catch the blast. They bent in towards the hall, green energy burst through the cracks.

"New formation." Hector ordered. He reviewed the team's weapons. He had a MA2B Assault Rifle and a M6D pistol. Marcus carried a MA2B and a BR 55 Battle Rifle. Duncan had his sniper rifle and a shotgun. Ashley was armed with two M7 Sub Machine Guns, and a BR 55 Battle Rifle. Each ODST had a modified M7 Sub Machine Gun. Two of them had BR 55 Battle Rifle. the other had a sniper rifle. The SPNKR rocket was with the fallen ODST behind the door. They all carried four frag grenades, Hector and Marcus also carried a few plasma grenades.

"When i open that door," Hector continued, "throw every grenade you can. On my mark, fall back and open fire with your automatic weapons. Duncan, try to kill the Shipmaster with your sniper. Ready?" White team winked their acknowledgment lights and the ODSTs nodded. Hector kicked the door in.

White Team tossed their grenades. Hector threw a plasma at the closest Hunter. It caught the alien's arm-mounted shield. Marcus threw another plasma at the Hunter; his connected with the exposed red flesh of the Hunter's stomach. Hector quickly threw two frags, then drew his MA2B and opened fire.

The ODSTs, who were not as fast as the Spartans, only had time to throw one of their grenades when Hector ordered them to fall back. Then ran backwards down the hall, firing their M7s. The Shipmaster and his remaining guard chased after them. Duncan aimed his sniper rifle and prepared to fire . The guard saw his movement. It stepped in front of the ship master and fired it's plasma rifle. Duncan fell back, armor smoking. The bullet blasted through the guards head, but didn't harm the Shipmaster.

The Elite roared with rage and charged. It tackled Hector, swinging it's energy blade. Hector emptied the MA2B's magazine. The bullets threw off the Shipmaster's sword. The Elite collided with him and they fell to the ground. Ashley moved forward and stomped on the Elite's sword arm, crushing the elbow. Marcus grabbed the Elite and tore it off Hector. He lifted it off the floor then dropped it. It collided with the floor in a pile. Marcus jumped on it and ran his knife through it's neck.

"Let's finish this up and get the hell out of here." Hector said.

Chapter four
Bridge of the Covenant Cruiser.

Ashley helped Duncan up. "You alright?" she asked.

"Yeah," he said, examining his scorched armor. "I'll live."

Hector and Marcus entered the bridge. The Hunter that Marcus stuck with the plasma grenade was split in two. The floor around it was covered in blood and scorched bits of worm. The other Hunter leaned against the wall. It's armor was charred and dented. The Hunter aimed it's plasma cannon at them and began charging.

"Give it up, big guy," Marcus said as he shot it twice in the exposed flesh of it's head. The Hunter fell to the ground.

A scorched crater stood in place of the Shipmaster's chair. The weapons officer was impaled by a large chunk of shrapnel. The navigation officer was thrown into the control terminal in front of him by the blast. Most of the bones in his upper body were broken.

"Holy crap," Duncan said as Ashley helped him into the room. "How many frags did we get in here?"

"Eleven frags and three plasmas." Marcus stated. "I kept track."

Hector armed the final warhead and stood up. "Now we just have to get out of here." The terminal next to him -one of the few systems still working on the bridge- flashed. Duncan passed his data-pad -the one with a Covenant translation AI- to Marcus. He held it over the flashing characters. "Incoming transmission." He said. "Look who it's from."

Hector looked at the datapad. Retas Ruk'loree. "Let it through." he said.

An Elite in golden armor appeared on the screen. "Welcome to my fleet, Demons!"

"Not this bastard again," Ashley said. "What does he want this time?"

The golden Elite glared at her. "Can i not talk with old friends without being considered a monster?" It asked.

Retas was different from other Elites in many ways. One was his ability to speak their language. The other was his sense of humor.

"Cut the crap," Hector ordered. "We're kind of busy here."

"I noticed," Retas replied, "I'm rather impressed you fought through the ship all the way to the bridge. I'll make sure this never happens again."

"Hector," Duncan whispered, "We need to get out of here soon."

"We don't have time for this." Hector snapped to Retas. "I hope you enjoy our presents."

"Im coming for you!" Retas shouted as White Team left the room. "I will have my revenge, and all you Demons will perish!"

Bridge of the UNSC Halberd.

Walker watched the Covenant cruiser. The view-screen in front of him showed a close up of the hangars. Suddenly, the hangars filled with explosions.

"That has to be White Team." Shadow said. He walked next to Walker. "I'm amazes they got that far."

"We all are." Walker said. He turned to th bridge crew. "Prepare to give them cover fire. Launch Archer missiles, and if necessary, MACs, to stop anything trying to intercept White Team."

Just then three Hornets exited the Cruiser's hangars. They picked up speed quickly and headed straight for the Halberd. One of the Lieutenants on the bridge turned to Walker.

"Sir, we're being hailed by White Team."

"Let them through." Walker replied.

"This is Spartan 054. Mission successful. All six warheads have been armed. Two ODSTs are KIA, the rest of us are holding up fine. Heading for the UNSC Halberd."

"Negative." Shadow said. "Admiral Wolfen has new orders for you."

Wolfen's voice crackled over the comm. "We need White Team Planetside now. The Covenant ground troops now occupy most of Jalef's major cities. A team of ODSTs was sent to liberate a city and rescue all surviving citizens. At 0200 hours we lost all contact with them. You are to go to the coordinates i am sending you, find the ODSTs, or what's left of them, and continue the mission. Any questions?"

"Sir, no sir." Hector replied.

The Hornet's changed course and flew towards Jalef.

Chapter Five
Jalef, Near Covenant occupied city. One day earlier.

Plasma bolts from the Wraith tanks arced through the air. One of them collided with a Pelican drop ship, destroying a wing. The other blast missed and exploded on the ground near the base. The damaged Pelican flew off course and crashed in a small forest. The other pelican flew over the Covenant ground forces and landed in the small UNSC camp.

One of the soldiers fired a SPNKR rocket at a Wraith. The Elite piloting the tank saw the rocket and evaded. They needed to get closer.

Four drop pods crashed into the ground behind the Wraiths. The soldiers took the distraction and opened fire on the Covenant. A rocket exploded in the middle of a team of Grunts, killing all of them. Jackals who had turned and lowered their shields were shot in the back. Even with this small advantage, the UNSC base was losing this fight.

Daniel kicked the hatch off his drop pod. He jumped out, M7 SMG raised. He fired at a few Grunts standing close to him. Two of them fell to the ground, the others screamed and ran. An Elite and two Jackals turned to face him. Daniel emptied the rest of his M7's magazine then dropped a fragmentation grenade and took cover behind his drop pod.

The Elite and Jackals tried to evade the explosion. The Elite backed up but the blast still hit him, dropping his shields. One of the Jackals rolled away, but was still caught in the explosion. The other didn't move fast enough.

Two more ODSTs joined Daniel. One of them, Mark, carried a SPNKR rocket launcher.

"We need to stop those Wraiths." The other said. "Mike, you get the one in the rear. Daniel and i will handle this one." He pointed to the closest Wraith.

Mike saluted, then began his mission. The ODST, their squad leader, turned to Daniel. "You want the gunner or the driver?" He asked. Daniel examined the Wraith. The gunner manned a plasma turret. His head was exposed, so he would be easier to kill, but the turret could tear through him easily.

"I'll take the driver." He replied.

"Alright, let's move out!" The ODST ordered.

They ran towards the enemy tank, keeping their heads low. A Jackal stood in their path. It turned and raised it's shield. "Flank it." The ODST barked. Daniel ran to the creatures right. It turned to face him and charged it's plasma pistol. The ODST leader fired his M7 into it's back. The alien fell forward, it's back covered in blood.

They neared the Wraith and crouched behind an overturned warthog. The ODST drew his sniper and aimed over the side of the hog. He fired twice. The Elite manning the turret felt something slam into his shoulder, then his shields dropped. The second bullet hit him in the head.

Daniel ran past the Warthog, straight for the Wraith. A Jackal stepped in front of him. The alien raised its pistol and aimed at him. A sniper bullet ran through it's chest and it fell to it's knees. Daniel sprayed it with his M7 as he ran past.

He ran up the side of the Wraith and crouched over the cockpit, making sure to stay out of the main cannons line of fire. Daniel unloaded a full magazine into the hatch of the Wraith. The hatch held. He reloaded and fired again. This time, the bullets began puncturing the hatch. He stomped on the hatch, in the center of all the bullet holes. It took Daniel three stomps, but the hatch finally gave in. He aimed his M7 and unloaded a full clip into the pilot. The Elite's shields dropped. The pilot looked at Daniel and roared, then went unconscious after the butt of an M7 collided with it's head. Daniel drew his M6C/SOCOM and fired twice into the creatures head.

A Warthog sped out of the forest. It was damaged by the Pelican's crash. A team of Elites prepared to intercept it. "We need to distract them from that 'hog" the ODST leader said. Mike ran up and fired a SPNKR into the elites. The blast killed two and scattered the rest. When the enemies recovered, they faced the three ODSTs. Daniel jumped down and took cover behind the Wraith. The Squad Leader, who had moved closer, crouched behind a burning Ghost. Mikey Hid on the other side of the Wraith.

The Elites regrouped, then fired on the Wraith. The ODSTs jumped up and fired whenever the covenant weapons overheated. One of the Elites threw a plasma grenade. Daniel rolled out of it's way. The Elite fired at him. A plasma bolt struck Daniel in the leg as he rolled. Daniel rose to a kneeling position and faced he Elite. It walked towards him and was about to fire when the Warthog crashed through the Elite team. The Elite about to attack Daniel turned to see what happened. The gunner of the Warthog fired, and so did Daniel. Their combined firepower tore through the Elite in seconds.

A Jackal walked over to Daniel. He raised his gun, but the Jackal swatted it with an energy shield. Daniel fell back and landed hard on the ground. The Jackal steeped forward and kicked Daniel. He grabbed it's leg and pulled it down. The Jackal hit the ground, and Daniel climbed on it. He drew his M6C and fired twice. The Jackal went limp.

Daniel stood and looked at the battle field. There were still a few Grunts and Jackals fighting, but the Warthog would finish them up quickly. The UNSC had won this fight. The ODST leader walked over to Daniel. "Lets get to that base," he said. "This was only part one of our mission."

Chapter six coming soon.
