Wow, this thread has really taken off. Thanks for your input everyone.
Firstly, I notice that many people are complaining about Halo canon, and claiming it might stop Brutes' implementation. Can I just say that canon is not particularly important for multiplayer. I don't remember an event in any part of the Halo story where sixteen Spartans and Elites of various colours had an all out brawl, with each one miraculously coming back to life five seconds after being killed. This happens every match in multiplayer.
Sure, you can't really change the setting or the basic rules of the universe. You can't suddenly set it in ancient Egypt and make Elites mummies or something. But you can tweak things. As I recall, Elite shields are weaker than Spartan shields in the fiction because Spartan shields were based on Jackal gauntlets, rather than Elite's own shield technology. I don't see this reflected in the multiplayer, do you? Spartans and Elites have the same shields.
See what I mean? This is a good example of tweaking small elements of a model that doesn't completely change the characters, but merely adapts and balances them for multiplayer. In the same fashion, we can let Brutes dual wield and have Spartan strength shields, or whatever we need them to do.
It has also caught my attention that a lot of people have an issue with the size of Brutes, and scaling them to Spartan size with Spartan hitboxes. I don't think this will be a problem. Brutes are a similar proportion to humans anyway (they're practically apes), and if you look at their size when compared with Master Chief in screenshots or while playing campaign you see there isn't really much difference.
There were a few issues that would have barred Elites from Halo 2 multiplayer if Bungie had tried to use Halo CE Elite models. They were considerably taller than Spartans for one thing. However Bungie adapted the model, and they now fit into multiplayer pretty well, even if some people attach a certain stigma to them. These are all excellent reasons why it could be added, but why should it be added ? None of you thus far have brought up a good reason why they should be added to multiplayer. Customization you say ? No, it would be pointless. If you think logically every single halo game bungie has expanded customization. It simply won't be necessary with all the new options being added. Please, anyone give me multiple (valid) reasons why they should be added.
