i've seen a lot of posts saying you have to sign on to B.net to get recon once you get the vidmasters, which poses a big problem for me. I think my account is too old to link (got it in 04, before you could ever recover a gamertag) because my b.net account is using the same email as my XBL account, but they are not linked. So i really just want to know if my gamertag has to be linked to get recon.

As far as I have seen, yes you need to link them. Maybe send an email to Bungie support...

You might need to make a new B.Net account

This is from Bungie's FAQ page:

How do I link my Gamertag to Bungie.net?

Did you use the same email address on Bungie.net as you use to sign in to Xbox.com to see your Gamertag? If you did your Gamertag will show up within the next 24 hours. If not, it would be best to create a new Bungie.net account with the same email as your Gamertag (or you can change your Gamertag email to match your Bungie.net email).

If you recently changed your Gamertag, but your Bungie.net Service Record is still showing games from your old and busted Gamertag, you just need to make sure you've signed in, played some Halo 3 matchmaking, and given the stat processing a little bit of time to make the adjustment.

Recon is on everyones Halo 3 game disc or else you wouldn't be able to see the armor. I know many people who have tried to unlock it when disconnected from xbox live and from what I have heard Bungie send you a code which you have to use at the redeem code area in order to unlock it.

I know one person who actually took apart his halo 3 game disc and got like $600 worth of dev kit systems in order to make a new halo 3 game disc with recon unlocked. unfortunately it still requires Bungie's signature to get it, Using the redeem code.

LOL you still have to link your Xbox live account to the B.net acount though.

Well for gears of war 2 to get any of the golden weapons you have to use a download card.

Is it bad to discuss how to unlock recon? NINJAS around?

Make a new hotmail account (Hotmail.com) and then change your Xbox's Gamertag to that Windows LIVE ID. Once you have that changed, make a new Bungie.net username with that e-mail.

To change your Windows LIVE ID for your Gamertag, load up your Xbox, sign into your desired Gamertag, and go to the "My Xbox" page on the Dashboard. Select your profile, and select "Manage Profile" from that screen that should of popped up.

Once your at "Manage Profile", select "Change my Windows LIVE ID", and when it asks for your current Windows LIVE ID use the e-mail and password you use to currently sign into Bungie.net. It should then ask for the new Windows LIVE ID, so enter the new e-mail address you made on Hotmail.com.

I hope that helps.

EDIT: Nevermind. It seems that you've already made a new Bungie.net name and Windows Live ID. So skip the new hotmail e-mail, and when Xbox LIVE asks for the new Windows Live ID for you to change to, enter the e-mail address and password you used for Bungie.net instead.
