Subject: BUNGIE being forced by Microsoft to ditch Johnson's cigar?

As you can see, Sgt. Johnson is not smoking anything on that cover

It may be that marketing laws say that you can not encourage young people, or anyone, to smoke by portraying someone smoking on the cover of a game. Even BUNGIE seems to be cowering under this law.

However, could it be that Sgt. Johnson won't have a cigar in the full game? Will he? Will there be an option to have a cigar on him or not? (Possibly have the cigar toggled via the 'Helmet ON/OFF' option?)

I don't know man, I don't know.

He'll have his cigar in the game.

  • 06.27.2009 3:11 PM PDT

He had it in halo 3 so it should still be there.

~ Nipples

they just took 1 picture of him and put him on the box art. That isnt even the real box art for the final game. Plus, there are screenshots where he has his cigar.

  • 06.27.2009 3:11 PM PDT

If you look on the side advertisments he has a cigar!

Every screenshot of Johnson shows him having a cigar, yet the ONLY shot of him that shows him without the cigar is the one on the game's front cover?

Not a very good portrayal of his character! That is, unless, the cigar is being removed.

...and I thought this game was rated M for mature. I guess the cigar is way too extreme.

My problems [with Reach] are basically just full parties, mlg, and people who go out of their way not to get killed.

Society is turning into a bunch of soft pansies. That's what I've believed for quite some time now.

I think we have a winner.

Microsoft do not wish to condone smoking. Remember kids, just because Johnson did it, doesn't mean it's cool.

Blatant lies. This is SERGEANT JOHNSON we're talking about here.

Part of me thinks the Cigar is removed in that picture to stop parents BAWWing about how the game apparently promotes smoking.

I agree with you, but parents don't pay attention to these age ratings in the slightest. They'll moan at the games industry for just about anything. Even if the title isn't geared towards children.

Recon armor was not gifted or bestowed upon me. I earned it through blood, sweat, and tears. Road to Recon complete, on to the next challenge. Halo 3: 1750/1750, ODST: 1000/1000, Reach: 1400/1400.

If they did it's because it was Bungie's decision. Microsoft isn't powerful enough to stop them.

At least he's smoking cigars and not cigarettes. Cigarettes are a lot worse than cigars, not to mention a lot crappier and addictive.

But honestly, the ESRB is getting extremely picky about things now. It's ridiculous on what rates a game M, alcohol reference? Seriously? Like Dady never drank a beer in his life... Mhm.

They've even started to regulate on what you can and can't have in a game. I.E, no sex. Sure, there isn't a need for it in the first place, but honestly. Let the game developers do what they wish with their games, and stick to rating them.

I hate parents who -blam!- because that game is too "graphic". If you are too stupid too read a rating, then you can't complain. The day I buy my kid a game without looking over it, is the day I suffer a stroke and forget how to read.

Well,my good man, welcome to Sturgeon's law:Where 90% of any broad subject is generally garbage. In this case childbearing.I sometimes question whether parents actually give a
-blam- as to what the kids do or end up as.

It's like a retard riding a bicycle while eating hot wings.
Sometimes you have to take the bike seat off to really enjoy it.

He quit.
Future cigars are bad for you.

that would suck... microsoft isn't disney
i think he'll still have it though...

Haters are going to hate.
Praisers are going to praise.

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

I hate ESRB, they tend to come in the way and ruin an artists/developers vision. I remember when they had Ion Storm remove the gameplay mechanic in Deus Ex 2 which allowed the player to sneak by monsters by feeding them a corps (it is there in the first game).

Seriously, sex for example, something that hopefully everyone will experiance is out of the question in a game (other then mature rated), but killing someone, something that hopefully no one will have to experiance, that they have practically no problem with anymore (not that they sould). (?!).

And now Sarge isnt allowed to smoke on some cover even though the game has got an an age restiction *sigh*. I guess they dont wont kids to see the box (?).
If it were up to them it would be illegal to let a minor just see you hold a cigar/ette other then from at least 500m of distance.
