Vehicle damage in Halo2/3 doesn't actually do anything. Its all purely aesthetic; a warthog that endured countless encounters work just as well as a fresh warthog.

My suggestions are 2 part;
1. Bring back vehicle health in some way; it made it so you can do permanent damage against a vehicle and it can't last forever. Right now vehicles essentially have infinite health as long as you restore your shields.

2. Damage done to a vehicle will affect how it works. It should be a strategic choice to fire at the wheels of a warthog to slow it down, or to shoot at the turret to break it down and make it jam/break.

This will be a BIG step in making Halo Reach different from Halo 3 (like the step from Halo CE to Halo 2)

thanks

Actually, a Warthog that is stuck with a plasma when "damaged" will explode. A healthy, brand-spankin' new Warthog won't die the first time if stuck.

But I do agree.

I agree. A damaged vehicle, should require more skill to operate. They should go slower, veer to the left or right, etc.

Great idea dude. This would definetely make the game more interesting and could dramatically improve gameplay.

1. Bring Back? it's never been there. (when a spartan's inside anyway)

2. Always been there. Just not to the detail you are talking. I used to spend a lot of time in Halo 2 blowing the wheels off of warthogs and trying to drive around. Fun as hell.

"YOUR DESTRUCTION IS THE WILL OF THE GODS, AND WE ARE THEIR INSTRUMENT."

Actually, it was, in Halo CE Vehicles had health bars of their own, and it also showed the health of any passengers.

Except for the Warthog-it was invincible.

are you talking about the stupid little things in the corner, or a vehicle destruction system?

  • 06.27.2009 4:14 PM PDT

the game probably wouldnt be as good if u can slow down a warthog or pop a tire, once that happens....no one is probably going to care about warthogs cause how easily they can be slowed down and then u cant be driving around for a long time, cuz of the darn tires, I wouldnt like that in my opinion

both?

i want total health for vehicles AND to have damage that affects how the vehicle works

heck, it'll make other weapons beside the spartan laser effective against vehicles

  • 06.27.2009 4:28 PM PDT

I like this idea an i would also like to see damage look more real
in halo2 if you shoot the windshield it would get bullet holes in it but not where you shot
in halo3 you break the windshield and the hood would break off an the engine would catch fire wtf?
also if you take enough damage you will see the tiers wiggling an such that would affect the driving alot
not im not saying make bullet holes in the vehicles but make it more real also some impact damage if you hit a wall at like 40 its gonna mess it up

so...
collision damage
real hit damage
flat tiers
exc....

edit: also if you shoot a warthog it wouldn't hurt you only the warthog

Actully, when a vehicle has damage, like on the ghost the top gets blown off, or on the warthog the windshield gets blown off, your alot more exposed than you were before. So it DOES do something, but just not alot.

And halo isnt supposed to be realistic, i dont want people to just shoot the hogs tires a couple times and im imobolised, i dont want a banshee to spin out of control when somone shoots it. I like the way the vehicle are now.

i think vehicle damage should affect the way the vehicle operates. like blown out tires

no, what I was talking about was in Halo CE. In Halo Ce, the vehicles did not die. Ever.

Couple times? Where do you make up these random statistics?

It could take a whole AR clip to disable one wheel for all you know. Don't claim "UNBALANCED" when its not even in the game.

You are wrong, and I'm not sure what version of CE you played.

in campaign both the ghost and banshee had health bars. bars. of health.

thats true but the warthog was invincible

with one wheel off you should stiil be able to get in it like if the turret is still on, and how the wheels always get -blam!-ed up and it still goes as striaight as a a brute if it meant -blam!-

yeah. and a battered scorpion takes more damage than a fresh scorpion

  • 06.27.2009 8:26 PM PDT

Halo CE campaign only had health bars for the Covenant vehicles because Bungie hadn't played Two Betrayals enough to realise that being stuck at "The tunnels below" with a Banshee that explodes in 1 shot sucks major balls. I see no reason to bring them back.

It would be a cool feature but if they do put it in then they should definitely add an option to turn it off as well. Nothing bugs me more in racing games that also use the damage system then barely touching a wall and suddenly having a barely driveable car.

if it was a option no one would have it on because the people with it off would have a greater advantage

i agree that this needs to happen.
in addtion though, i believe that the death animations should be improved as well. for example, in h3, when a hornet died, it either gently fell to earth or it dropped like a brick. there needs to be a way for one of the engines to be shot out and it sprials into the ground(see helocopter crashes)
this could also work with the following vehicles:

Warthog:
it could spin out or a tire could pop making it flip end over end

banshee:
it could lose one of the antigravity pods and spiral out of control like a plane going down

mongoose:
see warthog

for the rest:
be creative

Yea if you throw a grenade at the tires or shoot at them the Warthog should veer on whatever side you hit
