Subject: The Space Elevator ??

The space elevator is gigantic. Based on the condition of it in the background picture for the website, I would say there is more than enough of it missing to account for all the debris in Halo 3.

I agree with this. What is pictured in the banner is not tall enough to cover miles of Africa. Most likely the slipspace rupture caused a majority of the elevator to fall. Also contrary to what most people believe, New Mombasa is still partially intact during Halo 3. On the levels Tsavo Highway and the Storm, you can clearly see the New Mombasa skyline in the distance.

But how would it be a Halo game if something didn't get blown up! Lol

Actually it could. In Ghosts of Onyx, The Space Elevator on Cuba(?) is tall enough to go into space, and large enough to have 2 Covenant Warships orbit it.

Yeah I know, but in the Halo 3: ODST Forum banner (or in the background) you can clearly see that a large portion of the space elevator is missing.

The debris in Tsavo Highway is from the New Mombasan elevator when it was initially hit with the wave from the slipspace rupture.

Wait so you mean that the halo looking debris on Tsavo Highway is the space elevator?
Yes.

A marine even says so in-game.

Wow, I never knew that...and I play that level all the time :o

At the very beginning when you first go outside kill the covenant and then drive off to the left under one of the circles (watch out, there's a cliff) and stop. A marine's voice is cued that mentions that the space elevator was destroyed. "Well now it's scattered all over the savannah."

The Halo 3 Martyrdom

It would have been cooler if it just collapsed by itself. The slipspace rupture just weakened it and eventually it just fell in game. Would have been much cooler.

Alright so in various trailers of gameplay we've seen for ODST the Space Elevator in New Mombasa is still mostly in-tact and whole. BUT in halo 3 THE WHOLE space elevator has been blown to bits and scattered across the African Savana. So im thinking we will have to blow up the space elevator or something else will blow it up. Just speculation.

Well...think about the size of the Space Tether...it's very very tall so it would probably have more debris fall down than you might expect...also if you ask "Why don't the debris fill up the city then, if there's so much?"
Well The Prophet of Regret's ship jumped, causing a shockwave to spread outwards which would knock the debris in a specific direction...and Truth's ship was right next to the Space Tether when he jumped into Slipestream Space so the force exerted onto the Space Tether would be amazing.

That's what I was saying, for the "cool"-ness factor.

What a total waste of an Orbital Space Elevator.

But I have checked the Halo Wiki and it did say the structure was damaged, so who knows? I do want to see it fall down in-game or in a cutscene as it represents the loss of New Mombassa in the hands of the Covenant when the Chief went to Delta Halo.

Or some crazy -blam!- like that.

Go onto Youtube and search Halo ODST E3 First Cutscene and it will show Regret's ship jumping...if you look closely you will see the Space Tether fall (more of an explosion in one direction than falling)

Yes, I'm the guy who had the Flood admit to being furries.

Seriously? People STILL don't know?

Halo 3: ODST takes place during the events of Halo 2 and a little after but before Halo 3. This is why in trailers and in the opening gameplay the Elevator is intact. Regrets ship has not yet jumped in the first trailer or opening gameplay(its assumed it falls when the Rookie lands and we don't see it fall).

Haven't seen the first cutscene, have you?? *SPOILER* As you drop, Regret's ship jumps which knocks down the Space Tether. Trust me, go to youtube and search ODST first cutscene E3 etc.

You are joking, I hope.

It's REGRETs ship, Not Truths. And yeah, I watched that cutscene. As you drop, the Elevator is intact because this is before Halo 3(ODST) and during Halo 2, right before Regrets Carrier makes its slipspace jump within Earths atmosphere. As seen in the opening cutscene. Now the Elevator has fallen as we see in Halo 3.

If you don't understand after that I give up.

I heard that it collapses because of Fire Damage and No Power. Also, in the first level cut-scene, when you get to the ONI Alpha Site building, you can see it on fire, disconnected, and a large chunk is blown off.

Lol thanks for the clean up on Regret not being Truth (brain melt down or what? :D ) but yeah you basically said what i said and then asked me if i understood...

Just want to make sure we all know the timeframe in which ODST takes place. As long as you know what happened in Halo 2 and know when ODST takes place it will make more sense.

Yeah i got Regret mixed up with Truth...i remember the immortal cutscene:
Cortana: Regret, Regret, Regret...what does it mean?
Johnson: Dear humanity, we regret being alien bastards, we regret coming to Earth and we most certainly regret that the Corps just blew up our raggidy ass fleet :P
(Oh yeah, i'm aware that it's not word for word quoted)

Its from the Slipspace rupture created by the Prophet of Regrets Assualt Crusier. When it jumped in atmosphere it caused an overpressure wave that demolished anything big.

Is this man the only person that pays attention during campaign? Honestly, you are all idiots, it gets destroyed when Regret jumps from the city in the slipspace rupture. +1 to you.
Dang, you beat me to it of course Reget's jump would destroy it... unless it was something else because the ONI alpha site was still intact after the jump 0.0

CLEARLY it was destroyed during the odst drop .... watch when the shockwave hits the tether. you clearly see it breaking or bending at the last second before you get hit by the other pod...... watch realllllly closely

You are partly correct on why we can't build an orbital elevator. One is the cost but Nasa and the government know that space shuttles are costly and could be replaced by an orbital elevator for cheaper cost after x times of use. The second reason why is the designs are theoretical and we are not sure what to make it out of. We will probably build it of carbon fibers in a special sequence to form a compound many times stronger and lighter than steel. I am asusming that in the coming years an orbital elevator will become a better and better alternative to space shuttles.

judging by this picture the whole top of the elevator fell off, which is more than enough to cover the ground with debris since a space elevator cable could encircle the entire planet, i wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't debris scattered across the earth. (the earth is 40,076 km. in circunference and a space elevator would need to be 35,790 km long)

EDIT: i swear every time i post the thread just dies, nobody likes me =(

Sure do, and based on what I read, some people would agree with me. You know, the one's that use that pink squishy thing their skulls protect. Seriously, in H2 you can see the shockwave engulf the friggen thing when In Amber Clad chases regret through the slipspace rupture.
