I was in 5th grade. I popped in the Halo CE disc into the massive, clunky first generation Microsoft Xbox, and wrapped my small hands around the controller that was almost too big for me. Little did I know what I was getting into.
10+ years later, I still look up to my childhood hero, Master Chief, while everyone talks about He Man and Spongebob haha

It would be cool.
For those of you who keep bringing up the energy sword, stop it! It hasn't even been confirmed that there will be energy swords in ODST, and ODSTs would more or less look ridiculous using it, unless they toned down the lunge distance.
For those of you saying that Infinity Ward/Modern Warfare invented the 'combat knife', you're wrong. There have been others before it, like Goldeneye for the N64, Counter Strike for the PC/Xbox, Aliens vs. Predator 2 for the PC, etc.
For gameplay, sure, it'd be great to use for stealth kills, but there are enemies that it probably won't be too useful against.
Towards the people that say "it'd do no damage to vehicles, shielded brutes, shielded jackals, hunters, drones, etc."
There are exceptions, and only stupid people would attempt full frontal assaults without the use of any other weapon other than the knife. You're trying to denounce the usage of the knife by only pointing out the most ridiculous situations to use it on, making using the knife look foolish. Stealth is when the weapon is probably in its element.
For vehicles, I'm not sure how I'd use it, but for the wraith, I'd jump on, shoot the hatch door open, and probably knife the driver for fun. For shielded brutes, I'd probably lose their shield first and when they bersek, either way, they're now unshielded, and a knfe to the head or neck would put them down. For shielded jackals, a shot to the exposed firing section of their shield exposes them and sends them reeling backwards, allowing for a quick take down with the knife. For hunters, I don't know how much damage a backstab/slash could do, but imagine the blade tearing out chunks of their orange flesh rather than your first pummeling it.
Lastly, for drones, I remember multiple times in Halo 2/3 when drones would land and I'd simply melee them as the chief to put them down. In these moments, the ODSTs knife would allow for a quick and easy kill.
There are circumstances that call for the knife and some that just don't, but when used correctly I'm sure it could be an effective melee weapon. We can all agree that the ODSTs melee won't do much anyways, though.
