Subject: It wont happen but why do people hate the idea of a combat knife?

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

...game....realism ... physics.
Not sure if those necessarily belong in the same paragraph, haha! For ODST, I understand what you're saying, and I don't think you'll be able to beat the crap out of a brute in this game, but as a 9' Spartan, I'm not sure the line for "realism" is clearly defined.

I agree halo isn't really realistic but that is why we love it, its realistic in its own way.

Very true. My point is just that a Spartan who can "press RB to flip" a scorpian tank, can probably punch a brute hard enough to kill him!

What's hot, sexy and purple?

Ayane (and the Wraith :-D)

It's stupid because Halo 3 already has a "knife". It's called "energy sword". :p

Exactly that is why i think that the odst might need a knife in a bad situation.

In a way i agree with you but there is a difference between a knife and a sword.

Yeah, I understand what you're saying, and I agree that from the Halo story/fiction side of things, it would be quite helpful to a Marine. My only problem with it is that having a knife would detract from the "style" that Bungie has set with the existing 3 Halo titles.

It would be cool, though. Knives definitely have their place in some games. "Throwing knives" was one of my favorite gametypes in Goldeneye! I just don't think they belong in this one, is all.

Stapping a Brute is like stapping a ape. It's not going to really kill them quick, you'd be dead.

I completely agree with you but what if you sneak up and stab them in the front of there neck were there is an armor opening.

wht sounds better, "i knifed a brute" or "i beat a brute to death with my bare hands" which sounds cooler, the latter

Well they both do sound really cool but i don't know if an odst can beat a brute to death with his/her bare hands.

im pretty sure that there is a game that has a combat knife that was made before call of duty

  • 06.29.2009 9:14 AM PDT

Attention whores piss me off.

Posted by: Nemesis2252
think about it: what would any human knife do against a covenant energy shield? or a jackal shield? or a hunter? or a flying drone? any vehicle? would a knife do any damage to a berserking brute that can take full clips off any weapon (unless its to the head)?

the only use for a knife would be grunts or sniper jackals (who are usually out of melee reach anyways) not much use for it to be in the halo universe

Unless their shields are down of course ( for example, see Forges fight with the Arbiter in Halo Wars)

  • 06.29.2009 9:23 AM PDT

Even Buck has a combat knife, check the opening sequence of the game.

  • 06.29.2009 9:40 AM PDT

I am flatterd that you botherd to look at my signature.

how about like this...if there is a combat knife it is a weapon you can pick up and drop just like the energy sword....but smaller and darker and it dosent give you fairy dust and happy thoughts.

personaly i don't want a combat knife but if bungie puts one in ok no big deal.

For sure, there were. The first one I can think of off the top of my head is Goldeneye on the N64. There were a couple levels where you could pick one up.

If you had the knife its not really halo.

That is true that is the best reason not to have the combat knife, but i honestly wouldn't mind it if it was in a flashback for a very short period of time.

Instead of a knife we could have a lightsaber :)

The knife isn't really Halo

Then why is it:

A) On the difficulty symbols for Normal, Heroic, and Legendary in the first three games?

B) The melee weapon of choice of the ODSTs?

I was in 5th grade. I popped in the Halo CE disc into the massive, clunky first generation Microsoft Xbox, and wrapped my small hands around the controller that was almost too big for me. Little did I know what I was getting into.

10+ years later, I still look up to my childhood hero, Master Chief, while everyone talks about He Man and Spongebob haha

It would be cool.

For those of you who keep bringing up the energy sword, stop it! It hasn't even been confirmed that there will be energy swords in ODST, and ODSTs would more or less look ridiculous using it, unless they toned down the lunge distance.

For those of you saying that Infinity Ward/Modern Warfare invented the 'combat knife', you're wrong. There have been others before it, like Goldeneye for the N64, Counter Strike for the PC/Xbox, Aliens vs. Predator 2 for the PC, etc.

For gameplay, sure, it'd be great to use for stealth kills, but there are enemies that it probably won't be too useful against.

Towards the people that say "it'd do no damage to vehicles, shielded brutes, shielded jackals, hunters, drones, etc."

There are exceptions, and only stupid people would attempt full frontal assaults without the use of any other weapon other than the knife. You're trying to denounce the usage of the knife by only pointing out the most ridiculous situations to use it on, making using the knife look foolish. Stealth is when the weapon is probably in its element.

For vehicles, I'm not sure how I'd use it, but for the wraith, I'd jump on, shoot the hatch door open, and probably knife the driver for fun. For shielded brutes, I'd probably lose their shield first and when they bersek, either way, they're now unshielded, and a knfe to the head or neck would put them down. For shielded jackals, a shot to the exposed firing section of their shield exposes them and sends them reeling backwards, allowing for a quick take down with the knife. For hunters, I don't know how much damage a backstab/slash could do, but imagine the blade tearing out chunks of their orange flesh rather than your first pummeling it.
Lastly, for drones, I remember multiple times in Halo 2/3 when drones would land and I'd simply melee them as the chief to put them down. In these moments, the ODSTs knife would allow for a quick and easy kill.

There are circumstances that call for the knife and some that just don't, but when used correctly I'm sure it could be an effective melee weapon. We can all agree that the ODSTs melee won't do much anyways, though.
