Subject: Bungie's Harold Ryan confirms an interest in Project Natal?

Halo.bungie.org has linked an article from the seattle times discussing Bungie Studios.

Here is the article.

The article says towards the endMicrosoft continues to distribute Bungie games, and the studio so far has chosen to make games exclusively for the Xbox platform.

Bungie also received an early look at the "Project Natal" motion-sensing controller Microsoft is developing for the Xbox. Studio President Harold Ryan said he's enthusiastic about the device and it could be used in "Reach," another version of "Halo" expected in the fall of 2010. "I absolutely think 'Reach' could be enabled with it," he said.

So this confirms Bungie has an interest in Natal (or at least Harold Ryan does). Now my question is do you guys want to see the next Halo have project Natal? How would it work in a first person shooter? Come up with some idea here.

We're building a better world...all of them, better worlds.

My money is on Natal being Halo: Reach compatible, meaning you would be able to navigate the menus and such, but I highly doubt it will be used for game play purposes.

I just cant see it working with a FPS but I guess if anyone can make it work it would be bungie.

I really hope it won't be needed for the game. I don't want to have to buy NATAL just for this game. I've already bought a 360 for the series.

P.S. I deliver the Times! R.I.P. P.I. :(

Sounds interesting enough. There could be several levels of interactivity.
1. All sensor, all the time: Your holding a air gun, picking up air grenades, running on the spot, etc.
2. You use Natal for pushing switches, opening doors, etc.
3. You use it to go to the Title Screen.
Personally I'd like to see #2. #1 is a bit... different and wouldn't fit that well.

i'd love that , it could be used when john first catches the coin , and to send hand sign messages to the wrest of your team , to look around at your team etc. and maybe even to provide medical services to not just you but your team. you can give commands , handshakes and even salutes! it would be very useful during sparring and during obstacle courses and when you receive your augmentation and your first real piece of mjoliner armor , you could arm bombs , load your weapon and even use more complex melee with your enemies :) :)

I highly doubt you will have to own Natal in order to Halo Reach. I think it's kind of like any other motion peripheral. For instance you can still play guitar hero without the guitar. The only difference here is an FPS actually works well without a peripheral unlike a music game.

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

ODST;MYTHIC Screenshot winner! One of the first to get their hands on the mythic map pack.

I'm sure a lot of people have an interest in project natal, I have an interest in it. But I think a year isn't enough time to get something like that worked in with the game. Also, for it to be a main part in the Halo Reach would be unlikely. Maybe local, 1 player campaign, for tiny parts here and there.

But it being used as a major component in the game would be silly. I can see LAG happening, and not so much a fun expierence. I would say it is more for the casual players, not for a game like Halo, where there is multi-player match making, and indepth campaign.

Now, Halo: Chronicles, I could see this game having it. Like, it is said to be almost like a movie, right? Well interactive scenes would be a thought.

I'm saying it would never work, logically. People's arms would get tired of pointing at the screen all the time, with people standing up, holding nothing physically to represent a gun, except air.

Heck my arms would get tired after 10 minutes.

Unless, they didn't use the motion-detection technology at all, and still used xbox controllers, but used Natal's scanner/voice recognition for some purpose. That's all.

True, I could see the voice communication being the only way this is encorporated into the game.

  • 06.29.2009 8:38 AM PDT

well what about the beta since it will be using the 360 controller and if what your guessing may be true that means bungie will have to make 2 games essentially if it will ever be on natal

The worry is the kids complain enough about DLC as it is, its alright saying you can play guitar hero without the guitar, but its not the same, taking it away from the whole point of the game.

Not to mention the amount of people who just dont have the space to use one. I personally COULD make space to play it, but it would require time and effort to set it up everytime, and would upset the other folks wanting to use the living space for the hours i play on halo.

And the kids to like to complain about microsoft cashing in via the halo cash cow, this would not look good to make it an essential piece of equipment to get the most out of the game

*College *Programming *Gaming

I started Starori games in 2011.

No one has the right to take the life of another.

If Halo: Reach uses Project Natal it would be sweet. Something's in the game that would be sweet to use Project Natal for would be:
-Catching the coin Catherine flips to test John's luck
-Actually acting out the motions when throwing a grenade
-Some Item that can be scanned and used as a gun. To reload you would act out that motion too.

Then again how would we be able to move the characters? Also if I had a group of people over and we played split screen I'm sure one of us is bound to get punched.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!

Halo should not involve itself with gimmicks like Natal.

It's just common sense, like how do you turn around ingame without hiring movers to move the TV back infront of you?

I do not appreciate B.Net Group solicitation. If you ignore this and send me an invitation anyway, I will block communications with you.

EDIT: If Ryan said Reach could use Natal, could that mean Natal is going to launch before Reach is released? Interesting.

As BS Police already pointed out, it's kind of obvious that mainstream FPS franchises won't be created for full Natal functionality. It isn't just turning around. Angling your camera, reloading, jumping, crouching, exchanging weapons, lobbing grenades, switching weapons, flashlight, zoom magnification, checking the scoreboard, etc.

All of that would somehow have to be integrated into a controller-free environment... and unless they plan on having monotonous voice commands, or physically tiring motions to differentiate between every single function, it's not going to happen.

What he said.

I would imagine that games that rely on Natal's functionality would have to be specifically designed for it, rather than current franchises adapting their complex gameplay systems to Natal. The FPS genre would be too difficult to incorporate without some kind of physical peripheral unless the game was incredibly basic, such as requiring the blowback motion of a gun-pointed fist, which... seems silly.

H3ITWP

I could see it being used as an accessory to the game. For instance, if you are driving and you have Natal then it could be in first person and you actually have to 'steer'. Otherwise you just use your controler like other racing games.

I think that it would add another dimension to the first person shooter. Bungie and Halo CE broke new ground for the first person shooter. I don't think that it is out of the question that they do it again with Reach and Natal. Actually, it seems probable.

I agree completely.

IFYM

The biggest issues I see are simply the gameplay mechanics of running (how would it know if you're running forwards/backwards? can you imagine running all the way across sandtrap like this??), little things like crouch-jumping, and turning (i.e. looking to the right). If you turn your head to the right, how can you see the TV? How would you look behind you??

These are things that I belive would be a huge hurdle for a FPS with Natal.

The Halo REACH Script (post thoughts in thread)

Writing Lead of Whisper Studios. Check out Heron!

Look... I'm on bungiepedia!

If it is used for gameplay, Halo REACH will be a failure. Halo is about accuracy and twitch aiming... you can't do that in that childish Natal.

  • 06.29.2009 10:20 AM PDT

My biggest concern is how we would look around without looking away from our TVs.

I also hope that we can choose to play with an xbox controller or with the NATAL system.

I don't want to join your group.

I don't want Natal messing up my Halo. I don't see how it would help and i don't believe it will work for many game genres.
