Subject: Matchmaking Upgrade system?

One of the things I've been pondering on, is a almost RPG-like armor system and skill system for matchmaking.

For the first few months of Halo 3 everyone was stuck on constantly customizing their Spartans or Elites. Different helmets, shoulders, chests, colors and emblems. But this only lasted for a few months. And there was no difference to each armor modification or color, just look.

Imagine if you will, an RPG like armor and character system. Experience and skill not only upgraded your rank, but it let you update things like speed, strength, aim, or what-will-you. This would be reflected in the armor and color you character is. A character with full strength and low speed will appear as a hulking monster of a Spartan with hydraulics helping the movement. Their melee would do a lot of damage. If they could catch you.
But an all speed and less strength character would appear with slimmer armor, and maybe rocket feet? They would be fast, but the melee would less powerful. And partial Camo would be reflected by a an upgraded stealth appearance.
And of course each time you upgraded, you could choose different armor.

The catch is, you wouldn't start off as a Spartan or Elite. You'd start off as a regular marine, or a Grunt. Then, around, 10 skill or so, you'd be upgraded to a Brute, or an ODST. Then, around 20 skill or so, you'd be upgraded to a Spartan with Mark V armor, or an Elite. Finally, at 40 skill, you'd become a Spartan with Mark VI armor, or a really bad-ass Arbiter.
Each class would have the basic upgrade system, but would be limited to a certain amount of points, and it would be impossible to upgrade everything to max, to prevent complete domination. One could be well rounded, speedy, strong, stealthy, tactical, defensive, or a vehicle expert.

While this Idea is a far-cry from what Bungie usually does, but wouldn't some variety in Match Making play be exciting? Imagine a team with Four hulking giants armed with chain guns and rocket launchers, against four Arbiters with slight camo wielding swords and plasma grenades.

And who doesn't want to fully customize their characters with crazy emblems and modify the spartans with black and white camouflage pattern, or flames running up the side. Imagine a helmet with a flaming skull on the side, and teeth on the bottom. Wouldn't a piece by piece color system be great? Like the tattoo system in GH: Metallica.

Any Comments? Considerations, improvements. Call me crazy? W/e.

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

ODST;MYTHIC Screenshot winner! One of the first to get their hands on the mythic map pack.

RPG elements will make the game unbalanced, certain players will have advantages over other players.

Bungie is known for having a fair balanced game. You start with the same weapons, weapons are placed acordingly on the map, and you have a fair chance at getting the weapons just like all other players.

Improving one's speed, or strength, or vitality would be a bad thing. Imagine getting into a BR battle, and you shoot first, but you loose because the opposing player's health was higher then yours.

RPG elements make the game unbalanced. Which is just wrong and unfair.

Hopefully they could get their matchmaking system to actually use the "matches you with people of your skill" feature. That way overpowered people wouldn't face lower level people.
*cough cough Call of Duty cough cough*

Are you saying they couldn't make just a whole other multiplayer option from the main menu maybe when they release ODST that allows you to do this? It doesn't sound like too bad of an idea, but they'd have to create an entirely other multiplayer section that allows for this system to be available.

And it wouldn't be completely unbalanced if they have more health but move slower, then they can tank the rocket shot and keep moving, while on the other hand, if you have more speed and you get into a BR battle, you have more of a chance to maneuver around the hulking players and assassinate them before they get a chance to kill you... this would seem like ANOTHER problem, but sooner or later people that are large with more health would learn to back off and camp a bit, maybe they could be the ones guarding the flag or base.

You don't see all the possbilities of this gametype. Now the cloaking might be a problem, but you could always give the big people a higher advanced radar system so they don't have the invisibles sneaking up on them and assassinating them. And giving more options for upgrading certain character systems would allow for things like one of your teammates could be the radar of the team because he only ever upgraded his Radar so that he could see all people coming or going. Then you could have the tank, who sits back and guards the base and snipes from back because it takes TWO headshots from the sniper rifle to kill him and not just one. Then you have the speed person of the team who can move in quickly and complete the objectives, or dodge those bullets and rockets that he needs to and collect power weapons for his team, but he has lower health and is easier to kill... if you can shoot him. Last but not least, you could have your camouflaged and sneak teammate go in for the flag or take out the enemy team without being seen, unless of course the enemy team ALSO has a radar teammates that can warn against it; in which case the game becomes balanced again.

It might be a good idea, and it might not be, but you can see my points, and if you don't like them so be it. I tried to persuade you and if I failed then oh well. My main point though, is this playlist or gametype thing could be a learning experience for people, it will teach people to have a better tactical view on all situations, so you know how to utilize people's skills better for like normal Halo games. You would just knew who could do what better, it would allow you to build a better team.
