I'm well aware Reach was lost and glassed by the Covenent, but can someone explain how this is done and whatnot? I know it's a videogame, but still, I'm curious. Thx

Sounds like a bunch of Justin Bieber wannabes in here. I bet you all wear skinny jeans too.

This probable belongs in the Reach forum or the Bungie Universe forum, but what ever.
When the Covenant "glass" a planet, they release giant streams of plasma and let it burn on the surface of a planet. And fire + sand = glass, so the planet becomes a glass like substance (Cause obviously there isn't sand everywhere, but it gives a similar effect with dirt.) The fire also evaporates the water, and destroys the atmosphere making the planet unsustainable for life.

^^ That's probable not 100% true, but it's as much as I've got. The planet becomes a glass like substance, the atmosphere boils away, and the water evaporates.

The Covenant fire onto the planet surface with plasma, until every square centimeter is turned into glass, however, Reach was an exception, as you can see from the books.

"Lock & Load" --Spartan-SL4

Covenant ships rain plasma streams down to the planet. When the plasma destroys the surface and cools, it turns the surface hard, shiny yet brittle like glass. Does that answer it?

They reference the term "glassing" in Halo 3, when the covenent glassed over half of Africa in order to contain the flood outbreak. Like the above poster said, Glassing is a technique used by the Covenant to convert all solid matter on the planets crust into a glassy smooth surface.

Well its more than a covenant trick. Any intense heat source and most any earthy substraight will yield glass, be it oven, kilm, or nuke.
