Yes one can give a new graphics engine to a game engine but.....

halo 2 and 3 run off the same game engine (including physics ai etc.)

just as all the cods run off the same game engien called the cod engine

  • 07.01.2009 3:30 PM PDT

Its a sequel on a different game engine, i'd think its pretty much a given that the graphics will be improved even if not a lot they will still be improved none the less.

I think halo 3 had pretty good graphics. Just look at some of the game environments, they look pretty good and the fact that ODST has been built using the halo 3 engine and ODST looks really good from just the tiniest bits we've seen so far. That opening bit of the e3 demo where your in the drop pod and you drop into New mombasa was seriously cool.

Halo has -blam!- in good water effects

I got it! Halo, Sergeant Johnson:The Bad-ass chronicles...

Halo 3 ODST actually has better graphics then halo 3 but Halo:Reach should really be either next to ODST in graphics or better

NO GROUP INVITES

Jesus took 3 days to respawn, talk about lag.

I would like it if updated the Graphics Engine. All in all, gameplay and storyline make a game though. GoW 2 doesn't have the same level of story as Halo.

Work Together, Die Together.

It sounds like he thinks there's some kind of graphical limit that has to be averaged out between different parts of the game. So no, he doesn't.

Yes i do. A game can only take so much at a time depending on the type on engine it uses. MEANING, that the graphics are limited to a certain amount. So that means you have to decided on where to put more detail and effort -- as far as graphics go -- into certain areas of the game. (In this situation, im referring to the Cut scenes and Game play)

Dont just go barging in here acting like YOU know what you are talking about. believe me, ive been studying this for about a year now. And plan on going to college for 3D solid model designing. Meaning, im going to have to deal with graphical limitations.

@Helveck

Just an Average Joe...

Graphics do matter, but they do not mean everything. If graphics suck in a game, I will probably refuse to play it... Why? Because it shows lack of effort, and time invested. If the game looks presentable, then I'm happy.

Considering the jump in graphics from Halo: CE, to Halo 2... I think Halo 3 in comparison to Halo: Reach, will be quite different.

To settle the debate over whether or not Bungie used the same engine for Halo2 to H3.

The engine H3 is running on is called the HALO3 engine, only games with Halo3 in the title will use it (Halo 3, Halo3: ODST)

They have not used the same engine 2 times in a row except for ODST.

They will most likely make a new engine for Reach

Well Seriously have you seen the halo graphics so far they kick major -blam-. im sorry to say but im not that big fan i do play cod but cod creators are lazy and don't pt much time in there games sorry to say for cod fans! halo reach will probably be the world best graphics for a game.

We stand here and fight!
Any enemy that stands in our way we will grind them into dust, and continue our march to glorious salvation. We fight...till the last man. Never give up....never.

you have to understand that alll those games don't run on the same graphics engines as COD4 and Gears...plus COD4 is for -blam!- gamers lol there's no real skill involved in that game...

Come and check us out!

Why are all of you wanting another GoW or CoD. The graphics is what sets Halo apart from the other games. If Halo Reach had realistic graphics, I'll be greatly disapointed.

keep it secret, keep it safe.

halo games are always about good physics, plasting gameplay and big environments.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

I think this is what Bungie should go for with Halo: Reach, since they couldn't do it with Halo 3.

That trailer still puts most games to shame.

I think Bungie said they didn't do it because it didn't fit the Halo feel.
That would be a poor excuse since it's plainly obvious that they just couldn't do it.

  • 07.02.2009 3:21 PM PDT

Halo 3 may not be the most realistic game; but it's chrome.

Reach looks set to support full 1080p though.

Glorious Revolution anyone?

I haven't read all the posts...but,

I don't see why there is so much hating going on against getting improved graphics for Halo:Reach. It seems that almost everyone believes that better graphics means a decrease in gameplay-this entirely NOT the case. The gameplay for the Halo series has already been developed, and it is amazing, as long as Halo does not have a complete shift in gameplay, then gameplay will remain amazing, gpahics will not affect this. This is why Halo:Reach needs to get amazing graphics (it is the flagship game for X-Box) since graphics can only make a game better (if added to a game with good gameplay). So as far as I am concerned Halo:Reach better haves some damn good graphics.

If Bungie can do then its k if they can't then its k long as the games awsome!!

you can't be series graphics matter just not as much

Why? Give me an actual good reason why graphics matter at all.

Graphics are a large part of a game. If a game, in this day and age, does not have good graphics, its not going to attract many people.

I love Halo 3, but its graphics are outdated. I think this only for the campaign though.

Halo: Reach needs better graphics.

Every time you sneeze into an open Febreze portal the boner-tree drive shaft will spin into ketchup. But it doesn't stop at the number two pizza bell, not even close. It continues into the seventy eight minute long pile of green, sobbing cheese trains with no more butter, but more like the steak owed the tin cans some lovin'.

Yes i do. A game can only take so much at a time depending on the type on engine it uses. MEANING, that the graphics are limited to a certain amount. Wrong.

The hardware can only preform calculations at a certain rate and store a certain amount of data, and the combination of this and how well the engine is programmed and which features it includes as well as the quality of artwork itself determines what sort of graphical quality you can expect.

But the limitations are with how much it can handle at any given moment. Trying to render too much at once, whether it's too many models on screen, using shaders that are too complex, or too high of a resolution etc will cause performance problems. But cut scenes and game play are not rendered at the same time, and do not have to be loaded into memory at the same time, either. There is absolutely no reason that making one part of a game look worse will let another one work better. There is no limit that has to be averaged out between different parts of the game, but rather a limit that has to be averaged out with everything on screen at once.

Also, some games use prerendered cinematics, where the scene has already been rendered by another computer during development you're simply watching a video of it. In this case they render whatever they want with no performance issues at all.

ah i see your very verse in video game development

My bar is set with the Halo 3 announcement trailer for E3 '06 - for a 2010 game, I expect a non-resource killing set of real time reflections, true HDR (if it means using dual framebuffers to merge LDR and HDR) running at 720p with an edge based antialiasing system while still preserving the wonderful lighting, materials, effects, and other awesome bits in Halo 3.

With the lessons learned in Halo 3 (and ODST), I'm sure Bungie will be able to make a terrific looking game that takes advantage of things like dynamic shadows, weather, and local moving lights capable of global illumination. I know that three years after Halo 3's completion Bungie will have brought Reach's visuals right up there with their story, design, and gameplay. It can't be all scenery and subtle effects this time - Reach needs to make an impressive first impression that lasts throughout.
