Subject: Bungie, use real gun sounds this time.

DISCLAIMER: While some of the Halo bullets might not exist (sniper), Bungie could still get the sound of a real weapon, then alter it a little.

DO NOT USE THE LAZY EXCUSE THAT THIS GAME IS IN THE FUTURE. IF we are still using bulllets 500 years from now, why should the guns sound any different? If you are going to use that excuse, you might as well say that we should be using laser weapons.

In every Halo game, the guns sound, well, fake. This is most noticeable in Halo 3 with the assault rifle. Below is the type of round that each human weapon fires (plasma weapons don't exist yet so I cannot expect Bungie to get real sounding plasma weapons):

-The assault rifle fires 7.62mm x 51 FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) rounds.

-The pistols fire .50 caliber rounds. So they should sound like a desert eagle.

-The SMG fires a 5x23mm Caseless FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) round.

-The shotgun uses an 8-gauge magnum (3.5") shell. Those are huge rounds, most shotguns use a 12 gauge. The shotgun should also have more range. Real combat shotguns are effective up to at least 20 meters.

-The sniper rifle fires 14.5mm Armor-Piercing, Fin-Stabilized, Discarding Sabot (AP-FS-DS) rounds. Those are larger than a barrette .50 cals rounds.

-The machine gun turrets fire a 7.62 X 51mm caliber round (MG-42). The legendary AK-47 fires a 7.62x39mm M43 round. The rounds are the same diameter, but the machine guns cartridge is 12mm longer.
(Larger cartridge = more powder)

-Explosions:
I am confident that Bungie would be able to record the sounds of real explosions to be placed in games.

While I am pretty sure that some of these rounds don't exist, I still think that Bungie should find weapons/ammo that are as close in round size to these Halo weapons.

They should then fire off these rounds in a firing range, and record the gun sounds at different distances. Something I noticed is that the assault rifle sounds the same 20 meters away as it does 50 meters away.

Before you start saying that sounds in video games are muffled, I know. however, if you watch the trailer for Modern Warfare 2, you will see, no, hear how real the weapons sound. Especially at 48 seconds+.

Again, before you guys start saying that this is Halo, and that is Call of Duty:

Just because the games have different art styles, and different gameplay, does not mean that one has to sound real, and the other cannot.

I hope Bungie takes this into consideration, and goes the extra mile so we can have real sounding guns.

"Everything works itself out. The only thing that matters is whether you want it to or not."

Last Refuge - Operation Phoenix is in effect. From the ashes, we will rise.

Considering that this takes place in the future, 500+ years into the future, I'm not quite sure that they would be sounding like these modern guns.

  • 06.30.2009 10:20 AM PDT

The only sound I really hate is the H3 Assault Rifle but that's just because I compare it to the Halo CE MA5B which was beast to say the least.

  • 06.30.2009 10:22 AM PDT

But we don't have guns from 500+ years in the future. And if we are still using bullets 500 years in the future, they would still sound the same.

You're still forgetting that this is the future. The guns would probably have a better firing mechanism, as well as some different bullets, nto saying that they still aren't bullets. Maybe they could use a mixed sound?

  • 06.30.2009 10:24 AM PDT

That's fine I suppose but I just don't like how all the weapons in Halo 3 sound so plastic

It's meant to be un-realistic.

I will explain this once more.

Just because we are 500 years, doesn't mean that bullets sound different. The weapon might make a different sound when it is fired, but bullets sound the same.

What the hell is wrong with you people? Do you just skip the OP and then go down to the first derogatory post you can find?

I do not appreciate B.Net Group solicitation. If you ignore this and send me an invitation anyway, I will block communications with you.

I disagree. I like the way they sound. I wouldn't call them "fake"-sounding either, as their intention isn't to sound realistic. They're fictional, and because the universe is fictional, their weapons having their also unique, fictional sound effects is appropriate.

Everyone says they hate the way the AR sounds compared to Halo: CE, but I feel exactly the opposite.

Anyway, you say not to say "This is Halo and that is Call of Duty", but it is a valid statement. Halo is a hugely fictional science fiction FPS. CoD is a realistic piece of fiction based on true events, and its gameplay and sound effects are meant to be as realistic as possible. That sort of accuracy is not a concern in Halo since its weapons are fictitious.

That's what I was saying. Basically the weapon would make a different sound when it was fired, hence why it would sound different than modern guns, but I agree with you that the Assault Rifle sounds weird.

  • 06.30.2009 10:37 AM PDT

I am not really looking for gun sounds, just bullet sounds.

If you watch the video that I linked in the OP, you will see what I am talking about. I don't care how the guns sound, I just want the firing sound to be real.

You're in a Halo forum, a place where people can hardly read more than two lines without getting distracted...

  • 06.30.2009 10:41 AM PDT

Oh yeah It's Rayzed.

The Assault Rifle is gas powered and everything else seems pretty right when you fire it. It is 500 years in the future and we have advanced our weapons. It's actually a pretty reasonable assumption that we found a way to suppress the sound of gunfire. I suppose you could buy some gun sounds and play them while you fire your weapon if it makes you happy.

You also have to take into effect that we play as guys in titanium helmets with noise alterations where we (not us personally though) can change the levels of sound we hear within the helmet.

I don't know why, but I think it would make the game sound more stupid. We are all ready used to the sounds that are used know. If Bungie changed them it would overpower the game. Plus there is just something that wouldn't feel right about the game taking place in the future but the guns sound like the past. I think the weapon sounds are what set Halo apart from other games and reminds you that you are in the future not still in the past. Besides, the pistol is not a Dessert Eagle so why should it sound like one? Even if they modify the sound.

Real gun sounds would maybe ruin it, but the point I'm trying to get at is that real gun sounds wouldn't fit, bullet sounds will change over the future, especially with new bullet shapes and whatnot. And I did in fact read your OP, all of it. Nice work.

It is a new game. This is a chance for Bungie to take Halo in a new, better direction. It doesn't have to be a Call of duty type of Halo, but this is a chance for them to put logic into their game.

Why should an assault rifle sound like a popcorn machine? Why should a melee have 10 feet of lunge and 90 degree auto aim? Why should a rocket travel at 50 feet per second? Why should 4 direct scorpion tank shots not kill a player?

If you are going to talk about how the in the future, everything is different, then you might as well say that Halo has non futuristic vehicles.

Todays aircraft can easily destroy banshees, phantoms, hornets, etc.

And the pistol fires the same round as a desert eagle. Why would they sound different?

I only really have a problem with the assault rifle. The Halo sounds are original and I like it that way

  • 06.30.2009 10:57 AM PDT

They can be original but still sound real. The sounds that the weapon itself makes can be original, but there is no reason for an explosion not to sound like an explosion.

I agree with you on those parts. The Assault Rifle sounds absolutely horrible. It just sounds like a bunch of vibrations, that's it.

Melee having 10 feet of range is just stupid, but maybe not for Spartans, as you most likely remember that they've been enhanced.

And I Rockets only travel like 15-25 feet per second, and that I think is somewhat alright considering their technology.

On the vehicles, those are more for closer to ground action rather than high up air action, like our fighters. Our fighters are more suited to fighting tens of thousands of feet across the air, and they have Longswords, Seraphs, etc.
