You people are so incapable.

Don't give the guns the sound of a real gun. But record the sound of an actual weapon, and then alter it. But do not make guns sound like like two pieces of plastic are being hit together:

Assault rifle: Popcorn machine

Battle rifle: A sound effect I can make with my mouth

Sniper: Better than the rest.

SMG: The only really good sounding one

Machine gun turret: It is too low pitch.

Common people, how can like these sounds? They aren't real or satisfying at all! And who cares if you can or can't tell what you are being shot with? Either way you know you have to take cover and shoot back.

The AK-47 and the M-16 sound completely different.

I'll agree with you on the matter that a select few of the guns in Halo sounds absolutely retarded, although I do think the Battle Rifle does sound pretty good, just a little alteration and it would be perfect.

To be honest, when I'm being shot at by a gun, what sound it makes isn't on my top ten list of things to worry about.

Me neither, but some of the sound effects, when you think about them, are just lame.

You have a point, but if it can kill, I'm using it. The Sniper could make the sound of a Care Bear for all I care as long as it kills my enemy.

Do you honestly think that an unmuffled sound would be used? Of course not. But then again, neither should our weapons sound like nerf gun s. Even if real gun sounds were used (like in other games) just turn down the volume for Christ's sake.

Posted by: SweetTRIX
I must ask, how many of you have fired a gun before? Furthermore, how many of you have fired a gun in an enclosed area? An open area? Longbarrel vs shortbarrel? From they hip, from the shoulder? All of these things may sound rediculous, but they all have impact on the way a weapon sounds. Add to that the actual perception of the user, and there is no way to accurately synthesize what a weapon will sound like to every unique user.

It goes without saying that unless you've heard a weapon in the flesh, or fired one yourself, you have no room to critique. That would be like a vegan saying that the filet @ Ruth's Chris was terrible, or a person with teeth complaining about denture comfort.

I will admit (having actually fired weapons) that some of the rifle sounds come off as a little too "plastic", but there is good reason. You don't fire weapons consistently without earplugs for a reason, it damages your ears. The sound that most weapons make when fired is damaging to the ear drum after extended use. You want that kind of sound coming out of your 5.1 system for a 5+ hour campaign?

in all seriousness i dont think we will even be using bullets in the future, but bungie can make there own or record real sounds but either way the a.r. should sound like halo 1s assault rifle

What spectagon are you in?

They should make them sound a bit more realistic but it is based in the future.

Yes, Halo's rifle sounded much better than Halo 3's. I also do have to agree with you that we shouldn't even be using bullets. We should be using lasers.

The guns already do sound like guns, albeit crappy ones.

I know what a gun sounds like. I am not a retard. I believe that they do, in fact, sound like guns, however in the most remote and crappy manner possible.

Once again I must ask the question, have you fired a weapon? Why wouldn't you use un-muffled sounds? More than half of every Halo game is played in open space, the sound shouldn't be muffled. As for your "just turn the volume down" fix, you would remove the rest of the audio mix for the sake of having guns pitch perfect. I agree that they souldn't sound like toys, and most of them don't, but you sir need to get a grip.

I agree with all the saying you mention, but....its Halo 3 not a real life or -blam!- of Duty style of play. I mean it would be pretty cool that if you ran around with the assualt rifle, it sounds like a automatic Desert Eagle haha.

1) Sorry, I must have misread your post. I thought you were saying that un-muffled weapons would be a bad thing.

2) I have fired a fire arm, and yes, it is loud.

3) I am just trying to make the Halo experience more meaningful and, I for one, cannot find meaning in firing paintball guns.

4) I must apologize for being a little over offensive, it is just that nobody really seems to be understanding what I am trying to get across.

Fair enough, and I can see where you coming from. But having fired a fire-arm you know why they cannot reproduce accurately the sound of like weapons for the sake of the game. I do agree that they can make the AR sound a little more legit, but in terms of ficitonal noise, it's hard to know where to draw that line.

The other difficulty is knowing how those weapons should sound within their own fiction. Considering the fact that the game takes place in the future, it is entirely possible that the weapons are made of alloys or composites that affect the sound of each shot. Too hard to know. But for the sake of arguement it purely comes down to personal preference.

  • 06.30.2009 6:24 PM PDT

I personally think that the raw shot should be a real weapon recording, not muffled. But then they could just alter the sounds to their liking. I just wish the weapons sounded real.

Let Bungie do what they want. They can have unrealistic gus if they like. And just as everyone is saying this it 500+ years in the future. We don't know what guns will sound like then.

I disagree. I like the way they sound. I wouldn't call them "fake"-sounding either, as their intention isn't to sound realistic. They're fictional, and because the universe is fictional, their weapons having their also unique, fictional sound effects is appropriate.

Everyone says they hate the way the AR sounds compared to Halo: CE, but I feel exactly the opposite.

Anyway, you say not to say "This is Halo and that is Call of Duty", but it is a valid statement. Halo is a hugely fictional science fiction FPS. CoD is a realistic piece of fiction based on true events, and its gameplay and sound effects are meant to be as realistic as possible. That sort of accuracy is not a concern in Halo since its weapons are fictitious.

Funny how the OP doesn't respond to this.

You obvisously did not read the OP. If you had read it, you would have seen that I stated in the disclaimer:

"While some of the Halo bullets might not exist (sniper), Bungie could still get the sound of a real weapon, then alter it a little. "

This means that the guns would still sound fictional, but at the same time, not sound like an electric air soft rifle that is low on battery.

Why should bullets sound different? Bullets are bullets, and unless the guns have some specific suppressing system, etc. they would sound just like a real weapon.

BTW: CoD is not based on true events...

The only thing I feel should change about the sound design is the bass. Automatic weapons like the assault rifle and the SMG need to carry a deeper pounding sound - it makes them more menacing. The sniper rifle also needs more of a sharp crack to give it the feel of a more powerful weapon.

But Halo 3's SMG really nailed it. And the rest of Halo 3's sound design was still very good.

While I think a deeper bass would be nice. They all need a higher pitch.
