I take up your challenge:

1) a lot of blood and gore would not appear because you would be burned, and there would be no blood, because the wound would have been burned shut instantly.

2)well, yes. But, If the first one is true, the person would be dead before he/she could scream.

Halo does have a slight core system. Ever slash an elite with an energy sword? Blood comes out. The same thing can be used. And you are right about the energy sword, but you will be dead.

The plasma weapons in the game are weakened a little from the books, to make it more fair, so for game purposes it burns off the paint, and when you die it burns through.

Bungie might be able to implement a gore system, if they wanted. It has been done before.

Oh, thanks for bringing that up. Can't work out teh problems if no one mentions them.

It's nice to have someone thank me for attempting to counter their theory :) I know what you mean about the burns being sealed shut but still, i doubt Bungie would allow people to see rediculously burned flesh. Oh and Halo's current gore system isn't really "gore"...it's just a small splatter of blood which means that if this armor degrading system was brought into Reach and they implemented gore, it would be a massive, massive step up from the other Halo games...

I think if there wasn't that much gore (e.g. the same level that it's at now) then armor scarring would be absolutely awesome...it's just...implementing it so that everyone agrees on the level of violence/awesomeness would be quite difficult (Some people love more gore where as some people hate it...Some people love super realism whilst others hate it etc. etc.)

I think it would be cool if bungie put falling body parts. For example you get shot in the head your head explodes or a chunk is missing. Same for arms and legs and chest. Oh but it wouldn't stay when you respawn XD

I love this idea. I always wanted something like this to be implemented. I think the only thing preventing it would be disk space and lag. If they can find a way to dodge all of that then I am all for it.
Mabe a option to turn it on/off

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

I like it. I think it would be cool if it was minor stuff and it stayed permanently on your armor. That way you would know an experienced player when you saw one.

You'd know a player who has been killed a lot. Not an experienced player. And they'd have to only stay as long as the match was in progress or more realistically, as long as you're alive. When you respawn you get a shiny new suit.

the problem with that would be that at some point your character will be scarred beyond recognition

I see where your coming from there. I think that the middle is the best way to go. Like, if you shoot someone with a rocket, they won't explode in a gory mess, but maybe there is a large blast mark where the flesh is burned, and the armor is broken away. But there should be a point where no more damage can be done, like you will not be able to see the flesh if the person unless they're dead. This system will most likely have to be game tested to be perfected.

Last thing on the list. It's superfluous and should be added dead last.

If you're not afraid to say you're not good, then you shouldn't care if people see it. :/

Just sayin.

Edit: Wasn't a feature like this gonna be in Halo 2? They cut it because of power, right? Does this mean they could've added it in Halo 3 but just forgot?

Maybe. They might have not put it in Halo 3 because they made it so you can customize your character.

Yeah, they were just gonna be bullet decals on people. Plenty of games beforehand had it...

Even really old ones like gore.

Give full option capabilities for custom games, and minor properties for matchmaking.

  • 07.11.2009 11:55 AM PDT

well, the grenades could make shrapnal sticking out of the armor

Your friendly and eccentric Sangheili forum-poster. :)

I had a very similar idea, but when you die, the scarring resets itself, it was just there to show how long you've been alive in a multiplayer match. It wasn't just scarring either, it was other things like paint fade and dirt on the armour. So you go in with shiny armour, and if you come out alive, your armour would be all scarred and dirty.

You guys are asking for a decal system similar to a feature that's been in MANY games since the mid 90s.

Why Halo doesn't have it is beyond me.

I've always been a fan of battle scars, but I think it should be separate armor pieces instead of from live battle.

  • 07.11.2009 9:01 PM PDT

I am of an open mind and I am willing to hear criticism. Also: That's stupid and you're stupid.

I would have to say no, if I play Reach as long as I have played Halo 3, I would be covered in scars and eventually wouldn't even have armor.

  • 07.11.2009 9:04 PM PDT

The Forum Ninjas are asleep.

Very interesting.

There has been a new developement in nano tech that would make this possible, although reach is likely already half done.

It would go away when you respawn. Jeez.

Hell, it would go away after a while of not being shot at, or some would dissapear after new bullet hole decals are made.

It's suprising how many people don't understand a decal system that's been in games for a decade and a half :/ If you've played any other FPS besides Halo, chances are you've run into a game that has this decal system.

You've said that FPS's have had this in the last two or three posts >.< No need to keep repeating yourself.

Doom? - No
Marathon? - No
Goldeneye? - No
Timesplitters? - No
Call of Duty? - No
Rainbow Six Vegas? - Yes
Halo? - No

I'm surprised that you try to convince us that several games have implemented this. Rainbow Six Vegas is the only game I have played that has tried to implement this. I wouldn't say getting shot and blood expanding through your clothes slightly isn't what we are proposing here. What we are proposing has never been done (not fact). We are proposing that your armor be dented, scratched, cut, etc.

  • 07.21.2009 11:59 PM PDT

Great idea in individual games, I'd steer clear of permanent scarring however, as we'd be guranteed to have ididots who permanently scar their armour as much as possible just to be different.

permanent scarring would be epic, i would love to have a massive gash out of my chest plate

maybe after every game you can pick what damage would stay and what would fade away.
