Certain elements about Halo: Reach lead me to nelieve that this game follows n alternate timeline. Many forum members point out differences in the trailer and in the book "Halo: Fall of Reach".

*The Covenant attack is different.
*Covenant slipspace detection is different.
*These Spartans go beyond the original 150 Spartans, one even goes up to 259.

I could be wrong on my theory, but what do you think?

Loyalty is all I have.

I'm pretty sure it is in the same timeline, seeing as it is a prequel to Halo
Actually the same sensing station, Fermion station, contacts Reach about the slipspace ruptures, just like the book. For one thing its a trailer, a short one at that. So don't go judging a game we haven't even seen .

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

Unless you consider the past to be "alternate" then there is no reason to think as much. The game (regardless of what it's based on) will not be verbatum of any novel, that would be foolish. As such it is going to have some different dialouge, but the key events (provided they follow the books) will most likely remain intact.

I'm not, I'm just saying that people have noticed some odd differences between the trailer and the book. I also blame recently watching the Star Trek movie.

Halo: Reach is based off of the novel. So, in other words, no, it is not based in another, alternate timeline, but rather the past, in 2552, the Fall or Defense of Reach.

Fight with Glory...Die Gloriously

Personally I believe that the Slipspace thing is detected on the ship Master Chief was in because some of it went back to Earth and the other where Master Chief is has floated near REach just a speculation though probably wrong.

I understand the setting, its just somethings seem to out of place. The Spartans seem like they go up higher in numbers then they previously did. But we will see won't we?

The Spartans don't go higher up in numbers, they just all consolidate their power on a single place: Reach.

*The Covenant attack is different.
How?

*Covenant slipspace detection is different.How?

*These Spartans go beyond the original 150 Spartans, one even goes up to 259.There could have been more children surveyed and only 150 were chosen. Would 150 be the number of potential candidates you start with for a multi-billion dollar project? (I believe it was stated that a Spartan costed the same as a Destroyer)

In the book I don't remember bombs just ging off, or Reach just detecting the Covenant slipspace ruptures. You make a good point with the Spartans though. Sorry, but I might be wrong sice its been a while since I read FoR.

Well the events in the trailer were probably everything from the first hour or so of the battle compressed into one or two minutes, so it went by quicker than it would in real-time. The bombs are also probably the result of plasma bombardment, because you can see the same explosions on Earth in Halo 2...

Again its a trailer, events may have been quickened to display the setting. And as I previously stated they way they found out about the Covenant is the exact same way as the book. The explosions are just for effect showing the destruction of reach. Who is to say the trailer isn't the events quickend for a short trailer.
I think your thinking too much about this

What I'm saying, in simpler words, is that all of the Spartans group together, so their numbers literally become greater.

And when it goes up to 259, what he's saying is 2-59, as there was a second batch of Spartans created after the original Spartan-II program.

Their callsigns remain the same...

But John is Spartan-117. Wouldn't that make hiim part of a third batch of Spartans or something by that logic?

*Sigh* What I meant by their numbers become greater is that they're all grouping together, so that they are all in the same place, and it makes it look like there are more Spartans. Can you read?

And I know ILB is not all canon in Bungie, it was just a theory.

There were an original 150 Spartans, and he was of the first group of Spartan-IIs, so I don't think any first 1-117 would be required when giving his name. There were 150 Spartans, but inevitably only 75 of them were picked, and among those was John-117.

Okay, I thought you were trying to say that their numbers changed when more got grouped together.

And I know ILB is not all canon in Bungie, it was just a theory.Alright. I don't think it's right since Halsey refers to him as "candidate 117" when her and Keyes are surveying him... wouldn't she have called him candidate 17 if 117= Class I, 17, and 259 = Class II, 59?

No problem.

Alright. I don't think it's right since Halsey refers to him as "candidate 117" when her and Keyes are surveying him... wouldn't she have called him candidate 17 if 117= Class I, 17, and 259 = Class II, 59?

I just explained it. He was number 117 out of the original 150 candidates for the Spartan-II project. However, they took out 75 of them, and John just so happened to be one of the lucky 75 who were included in the Spartan-II project. Now, he's not called 1-117 because generally it's not required, like how we just say Halo instead of Halo 1. But for 2-59, it's 2 because he was part of the second batch, however that part is just speculation and theories.

Wasn't it only 35 or so candidates that made it to the end of the process?

33, to be precise, made it to and completed the final phase of their Spartan training. Why?

So it went from 150, to 75, down to 33? I don't remember that.
