Its very simple people, the books are made for a reason. Yah, the game came first, but the books are just as important as the game story. Every single bit of whats in the books, is just as equally important to the entire Halo universe. The books arnt just made up JUST for money, I am perty sure that Bungie had the story set aside and the great writers such as Eric Nylund Found a way to succesfully put it in a book.

Also, don't say that they shouldn't go by the books just because you havent looked away from your T.V. or PC screen long enough to pick up a book and read one, seriously people, purty much every person who doesn't want to go by the book hasn't even read any of the books!!!!

Thanks for listening, please share your opinion :D

(yes, i know i have bad grammar, i have always had it, lol)

Bungie isn't going to make a game where you need to read the books to understand the game. Clear?

He's saying that they should not just trash the books, they should stay true to them. He did not say that they should make it so that you need to read the books to understand it.

I am around, 3/4 done The Fall of Reach. It is not game worthy, well, it isn't FPS worthy. I would like a new perspective to reach, not one I have read in a book.

I love the books but there are a few discrepancies between the books canon and the games canon.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bungie had moments selected from The Fall of Reach, and offered up plenty of untold battles as well.

EDIT:
Actually I didn't really care for The Flood by, William C. Dietz. At all.

Minor discrepancies are minor. The storyline of Halo: Reach is flexible enough as it is. I hope they keep it true to the books.

  • 07.01.2009 1:17 AM PDT

Yeah, most people that hate the books haven't read them. Although, as stated above there are apparently some people that don't like them*. I admit that "The Flood" was a different take on Halo: CE and there seemed top be something about it that was wrong.
As for your main statement, what are you trying to say? That Bungie should leave the books alone, or that they should branch off of the books and make a game about that? I'm confused.
*That's sarcasm my friends.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Pope

The relationship between the Halo books and Halo games is likely the same as the relationship between the Star Wars books and Star Wars films- the books are canon, but a film can contradict whatever it wants and its the books that have to adjust.

If Bungie feels like Halo Reach will work better if it doesnt follow the plot of the novels, then its the novels that will have to be retconned. The Game Canon has priority.

  • 07.01.2009 2:36 AM PDT

I think Bungie will make a game where you can ascertain a greater understanding having read the books but have it complete and sensible by itself. This way, they can please people who have read the books and people who do not or have not read them.

The parts that people are saying might be in the game are actually along the end of TFoR as well as throughout First Strike, which I'm assuming you also haven't read?

They provide quite a few adaptable scenarios that would make for a good game, and honestly, I would love to see this mainstream story adapted than have some side-story retconned into significance out of nowhere.

have any of you guys went on IGN and watched the in depth analysis of the reach trailer, seems like its tipping the cap a lil to people that did read the books, anyhoo i just wanted to jump in and say that i was completely confused about the existance of "the flood". I felt it was poorly written and most of the time it just felt like halo was bein retold in words, it took me so long to get through it because i could barely read a chapter without thinkn "i could just play this ? ". the only decent bits were when it followed the likes of Silva and his survivors and even at that those bits were extremely short compared to chief sections. As for Eric Nylund i could barely put down fall of reach and its the same again for first strike, i loooooooooooooooooooove the books. I dont see them as cashin in or anything, i think they expand the universe and i actually felt no connection really to John - 117 until i read fall of reach and actually found out who he was and what made him him. It put a heck of a lot of background into something that was pretty much undescribed and left as a mystery in halo. LONG LIVE THE BOOKS!

I'm glad theres so many like minded individuals around here :)

The books are great. They add to the story, keep the canon in mind, but add some perspective you just don't get playing the games. For example, the viewpoint of Yayap really adds something to Contact Harvest.

I think the games are better for the books. The whole Halo universe is fuller, richer, and a damn sight more interesting with all this backgroung info.

That said, Dietz did a hash job of The Flood, and he had a blatant disregard for the previous books in the case of style and character behaviour - OK, he made Silva look like an ass and maybe he was, but he made Chief look like a religious nut - he "gives thanks" 2 times in one chapter! - not to mention all the characters onboard the Autumn who we learned about in Fall of Reach being executed 2 chapters in ++++PLUS! By an Elite using a human HE pistol which they would never do! Except, maybe, that one at the end of Halo: CE legendary :P

I could go on... i won't. Basically, if you haven't, read the books. If you have, good work. See you on reach when the time comes. I'll be in my Pelican... maybe i'll give you a lift...

I don't understand why someone would refuse to read the books. Maybe they're one of the ridiculous number of anti-intellectual people who believe that reading is for geeks, and think they're way too cool for that. Maybe they can't actually read. Or maybe, just maybe, they're too stupid and lazy to manage something beyond sitting in front of the TV and stuffing their idiotic greedy faces long enough to invest more than an hour into something that isn't broken up by commercials to give their (already tragically underused) brain a rest.

If you do read the books, you'll get the entertainment of some great stories and you'll learn plenty of new things about Halo. You can't lose!

To everyone who did read the books, I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did. They're good aren't they?

Halo Nerd?
How does it make you a nerd because you read the books? What if someone never played the games and read the Halo books? Are they a Halo nerd then? The Halo novels are great works of literature in their own mind, you don't have to be a "nerd" to like them.

Unless of course you think that only "nerds" read, in which case I know what your grammar is so horrible.

It seems to me that the problem is more about people not wanting to read at all, nevermind just Halo books. If that's the case, society is seriously messed up.

Bungie considers the Books Canon just like the games.
They even mentioned in one of the updates that there are some contradictions or inconsistencies in their books and they said most if not all was planned or something along those lines I believe.
