Just curious, don't want to whine about the name not suiting the product, I would just wish to be educated.

Anyways, if we know that H3:O takes place in-between Halo 2 and Halo 3, then why is it still called Halo 3, being a prequel to the actual Halo 3? This may sound silly, but wouldn't something like "Halo 2.5" be more suiting? Or Halo 2: ODST?

Like everyone said it is an expansion, it uses the same engine as halo 3.

Wait i'm getting this. So usually someone would see an expansion as something to add to the end, correct?

But in this case, the expansion is being put on to the "front" instead of the "back," if you will?

Usually an expansion is the same game just with a few extras.

  • 07.01.2009 10:23 AM PDT

I don't know, they figured Halo 2 ODST would have sounded weird nowadays or something.

3 Reasons:

1. It uses the same engine (graphics, AI, etc.)

2. It's an expansion to the Halo 3 game

3. Halo 2: ODST or Halo 2.5 wouldn't make sense, we'd be going back in time. If anything, it has to have Halo 3 in the title to signify that it's after the Halo 1, 2 and 3 games.

Hobo Grunt's mother died, so everyone thought 'Sum1 ded! This will be funeeh! LAFFF AT ME NOW THAT I MAKE FUN OF DED PEPEL'.

They get a special place in hell.

Funny how they charge us full price for a new game and give it the name of an old one.

it called halo 3 odst because its a game leading up 2 the begining of halo 3. halo 2.5 may have been appropriate but would sound a little silly because as you play as the rookie you see some exploshions i the distance that show resemblence 2 halo 3's destruction( if my post confuses anyone i apologize if u watch the e3 interviews you will see what i mean)

When they brought out expansions for Fallout 3, they didnt call it Fallout 4, 5 and 6.

think of it as a completely differnt game. halo 2 ended in new mombasa after the slip space incident leaving it in ruins. halo 2 is over for all intents and purposes on earth/ in new mombasa.

cue the ODST's to come in and kick some covenant -blam-. this is now where halo 3 starts in new mombasa. remember normal halo 3 takes place a hundred kilometers away from there, with the cloesest you get to it being voi.

anyway, halo 2 has ended, and halo 3: odst begins

Wrong. It starts after the 3rd mission in Halo 2 where the Covenant do a slip space jump. Hence the slip space jump at the start of ODST.

  • 07.01.2009 11:18 AM PDT

it runs off of the Halo 3 engine and takes place before Halo 3.

So you are right, it may take place before Halo 3, but it has more in common with halo 3 than Halo 2.

  • 07.01.2009 11:20 AM PDT

Fallout did the same thing with one of their DLC packs, which was a prequel to the entire series, I believe.

  • 07.01.2009 11:20 AM PDT

Halo 3: ODST was considered an expansion until Microsoft's recent price change to it, hence, it was an expansion to Halo 3, until now.

again, as far as Halo 2 on earth is concerned, it's over..they don't go back to new mombasa/ earth for the rest of the game. therefore, as soon as the ODST pods drop, so begins Halo 3: ODST.

Because the Halo franchise sells like hot cakes and with out Halo 3 in the title Joe the plumber wouldn't see it's a Halo game.
