Subject: Ok here it is Bungie.. Epic Idea - "Trigger System" - Che...

With all the talk about creating your own achievements and what not I thought of something you guys might be interested and could be implemented in Halo: Reach.

My Idea

For use with custom games only:

While I believe that there will be a lot of returning options in the Halo: Reach menu as well as in MM and campaign.. Just as with firefight, I believe its time for some new options within custom games.

I.e. Create achievements within custom games (either worth 0 gs or call them something else - so they dont show up on achievement lists in the game)

You build your variant, or use someone elses, or use a Bungie made map and set up a few achievements that you could get for doing specific things during the match. Build the gametype around these types of achievements. The winner of the match could be determined by who scores the most of the particular matches achievements.

For example:

Map: Blood Gulch 3 (heh) or whatever map you want.
Gametype: Achievementology
Score to: First to 10 achievements (or highest #/points when match ends)
- You could have some achievements worth more points than others (degree of difficulty)

Achievement Creation and Points Setter:

- Hijack 3 vehicles from the opposing team (2 points)
- Kill 3 opponents while using Active Camo (2 points)
- Get a grenade kill from 100+ yards (3 points)
- Achieve a double kill with the laser (2 points)
- Get an extermination (3 points)
- Get 5 assassinations in one round/match (2 points)
- Get a double kill (1 point)
- Stick an opponent with Brute Spike grenade (1 point)
.... and so on.. some easy.. some more difficult.. you get the idea.

The menu would have to have a list of possible achievements you could select from so that the game knows when one has been achieved. Use it like a checklist so that the custom game maker can go down the list and decide which ones to check off.

After some time in customs I could see some awesome Bungie contests coming from this.
I.e. Shishka sets up a playlist where he has a lot of different maps/gametypes set up with unlockable "achievements" to get during the match. Make it social. Since these wouldnt be actual achievements that give you gs points, theres no reason for people to cheat.

I dunno, just an idea. I think it would be something new and cool to try out. Would make gameplay a lot different. Sure you could rush and just kill people instead of going for the achievements but you would lose for doing so.

Any thoughts? Suggestions? Ideas?

Would you dance for it?

Actually a trigger system (basicly what you have described) would be awsome.

Editing 'Conditions to Win' would be interesting as would be spawning map-modifying objects as the game progresses.

Ok yeah I didnt know what it was called.. but yea that would work well with the achievement list.

  • 07.01.2009 10:03 PM PDT

Ha, that would be fun!

Hope it will happen, doubt it will.

common sense is not commonly used

Sounds cool. I think there was a kill+medal scoring system option in one of the halos that would have worked similarly, but not as customizable

IM always mad because people will have a great idea and their will be five post saying its good and then no one will post because they think its good two then they dont post so the topic falls to the back and bungie wont see it

their should be a this is a good idea button and then bungie can look through the best idea by how many good idea clicks its got

how would there be the one team to win? if it was more teamwork oriented this guy has these to unlock by doing blah blah blah and this guy has these and this guy......after all said and done the team would have this many points but how would it come out to one team winning or one person winning however you would set this up? you would have to improve on it so somewhere along the line someone will be able to come out on top. now if this is what your talking about slap me in the face, please and thank you. but what you have there is almost like what we already have with the medals, are you saying throw a point system in there with these medals or something?

Sort of.. only more achievement oriented. For instance.. if you got 5 sticky kills in one match it could be worth 3 points for your team. Teams try to go for set achievements that could be in the upper left hand part of the screen or something (like the skulls in firefight). Kills could be worth 0 points alone but if an achievement was (double kill worth 1 point) then youd get a point for killing 2 people within 4 seconds of eachother. It would just be interesting to see how it would affect gameplay.

Another example.. If one of the achievements was "Score 3 kills with the Beam Rifle and 2 headshots with the Sniper rifle" then the map would obviously have more of those types of weapons. For mongoose splatter achievements.. have more of them in the map. Its just a basic idea that would require planning before jumping into action.

However, a custom game could be started with a checked off list of achievements that could be attempted on any map. Certain maps have certain possible achievements to select. The team who scores the most achievements wins. (Obviously some achievements would have to be easy so that you dont get 0-0 ties all the time). Score to 10 or 15 or something..

If you could actually create your own achievements that would be awesome... but the console wouldnt recognize typed achievements. Mix 'n match could work with a checklist trigger system though.

- Double kill (1 point)
- Kill an opponent from 100+ yards away (2 points)

You could check both of these and combine to make one achievement worth 3 points. So its like your creating your own, but within the options the game gives you. There could be a list of hundreds of different challenges we could select from. Could be interesting..

So, what your saying is, in custom games, you can create a list of achievments, and how much they are worth, and there would be a gametype where first person or team that gets howmany ever achievments there is to get, wins.

Unlike your maps, I love this. :P lol, sorry, just had to throw that out :P
(Your maps are okay, it was a joke)

Anyways, I love this idea. Only thing is, I dunno how you would be able to create your own achievments, this would be pretty pretty hard. Unless there was like a pre-made list of things that you could combine.

It's very nice to see a legitimate idea. I think this could be pretty cool. Just as long as achievement unlocked doesn't show up. Like an in game achievement system. Except you get to choose what they are. The only problem i see is figuring out a way to choose how you earn these. Possibly preset options, but either way you could get a lot of creative gametypes from this.

FIRST OF ALL... MY MAP "Backdraft" made the 4v4 Bungie vs The World Playlist. Check it out (third one down). So yeah.. haha i hate you.. and yeah, I said it would have to be a premade list. You guys gotta read my posts. I know you cant literally type out your own achievements.. the console wouldnt recognize them. Thats why I said a "trigger system." You go through a checklist and select the premade achievements and select their point values. And no.. they would NOT give you gamerscore. Ive already stated this too.

I think you could call them "objectives"

Sure call them whatever.. I just called them achievements so people would know what I was talking about. Objectives works though..

The Tony Hawk games have been doing something similar to this for years (At least I know you could in the earlier ones). Remember making your own 'gaps' in the THPS series? This has been done before and can be implemented.

How would these be put in/set though? Would they be forged? How much flexibility would you have in creating these user generated achievements or would they be 100% premade (premade probably wouldn't be as cool tbh)? Would they be tracked forever or just during that one session?

If you can answer these and many more questions in a manner that would convince Bungie that it would be worthwhile to code into the game then I think this could be really cool.

Every single one of those questions is actually answered in my original post. User doesnt create them, they select from a list.

Im not familiar with CoD but yeah what youre talking about is sort of what Im talking about.. I dont think you should get rewards for completing the "objectives" or achievements or whatever you want to call them.. Its simply just the way you win the game.
