then its prob squad based.

*Facepalm*
They said it wouldn't be squad-based. They didn't just disqualify that super narrow-specific category of squadbased tactical mmo. They disqualified all that comprised that. And everything else. It's just a fps.

Rosenkreuz, man, I agree with you. But have you ever played any Halo game? Spartans are shooting each other all the time in multiplayer. An MMOFPS would obviously be multiplayer as well.

Reach MMO. Here's to hoping.

And the people that believe "the hardcore playlists would be more popular if the rules were strictly MLG" can come off it, now. If you're not willing to support something close to your own setup, there's no reason for us to believe that cloning our own lists and stripping the variety down will attract more people. -- Shishka, Bungie.net

Q. My cousin told me that Halo: Reach is a squad-based tactical MMO featuring all kinds of ridiculous stuff that I shouldn't believe. Is he a liar?

A. Halo: Reach will be a First Person Shooter. You will shoot stuff from a first person perspective. It will be awesome.

^^^ Are you taling about that? ^^^

That doesn't confirm or deny anything. Bungie is notorious for holding stuff back and then hitting you with a sledge hammer announcement.

ODST only being a campaign is already a huge disappointment, if they don't spice something up they are going to continue to lose their fan base. (Albeit the fanbase is huge and that will likely take a long time).

All I'm saying is that I love the Halo universe, but same old 4v4 TD's are not holding my interest anymore.

You're suggesting they just blatantly lied to us. When has Bungie done that. They have mislead before, but they never done this sort of thing. They never took back something they just outright said. You can't deny it's a FPS. They said it. They are making it. They would know.

Uh...What part of MMOFPS don't you understand. You shoot stuff from the first person view, yet it's a MMO. Hmmmm....that would make their comments, how do you say, misleading.

I admit it is probably unlikely, however, I still haven't seen anything to deny it. Hope is alive.

They said it was not an MMO. In the context of the phrase, it's obvious that that includes any sub-genre of MMO. Like MMOFPS.

No, they said Halo:Reach will be a FPS. They didn't say it wouldn't be anything. The question asked generally if it was going to be an MMO or a squad based game. Bungie replied as they usually do, by competely dodging the question and giving very generic answer that confirms what we already know.

Bungie doesn't answer questions, it's just how they work. Their policy is to give the bare minimum info and leave us totally guessing as to their plans.

Please explain to me how an MMO halo would fit into the Reach storyline. If it's so plausible, how would the gameplay work, and stay canon. And how would a squad-based, tactical fps work. It's just not Halo. At all. Would they use cover, or what. That's not what Halo is about. Halo is run and gun, and always has been.

True, but also relate it towards my first part of my post. I see no way to incorporate the training of the spartans and the huge battles of Reach withing an online community.

Are you suggesting a sort of multiplayer playlist sort of thing in which it would be a MMOFPS?

Since when does the Halo trilogy exactly follow the books? And Halo is simply about run and gun? Do you think that ODST is going to be run and gun? Do you remember that there is a game called Halo Wars, that *gasp* isn't even a FPS?

That is the most ignorant argument that continues to resurface..."That's just not what Halo is about." In 2011 there will be at least 6 Halo games released total. It is very possible that 3 of them will not be "run and gun" games. So what exactly is Halo about again?

To be fair, Halo Wars wasn't done by Bungie.

Halo 3:ODST is run and gun. There are 2 main types of FPS. Run and gun. and ones that use a cover system. Halo 3:ODST is run and gun. Halo Wars isn't even made by Bungie, is totally unrelated to Halo:Reach, or this argument, and is a clearly different genre. We are talking about the Halo FPS games, and what will change. And the reason the argument is used is because its true. Bungie has said that Halo 3: ODST still plays like Halo, but feels a bit different. And they will continue to do so with their fps games(with some new twists). If people wanted squadbased, or MMO, or games with a cover system, there are plenty of alternatives out there. But what game, plays like Halo, and has the multiplayer to back it up.

I stole this from a post I have previously made so some of you may have already read it. Anyways, an MMOFPS is possible, however it is not possible. It HAS BEEN DONE in the past, and it would work within the realm of REACH. Anyways, read on.....

For everyone who is saying it is a FPS......stop. We know that. However that does not remove the claim that it can still be an MMO(RPG or FPS whatever). I refer you to a game called Planetside.

If you know what planetside is, skip this next paragraph.

Planetside was an online RPG, that had the player participating in the same persepctive as a FPS. It was an online war constantly waging whether or not you were playing between 3 separate factions on I think ONE planet. Players selected classes, joined factions/clans within their respective military branch choice. Players also leveled up certain skills (OMG, JUST LIKE AN RPG!) of their choosing as they progressed earning xp for completing certain objectives in world.

I am NOT saying this is likely that Reach will be in this category, however it is POSSIBLE. With an entire planet to work with (Reach), with many classes to work with within each respective military branch, it is definitely possible.

I welcome this format of a game. I LOVE the halo games, but it would be nice to see Bungie (Not Ensemble Studios) branch out of the FPS category. Its possible, itd be fun, and with the Halo name slapped on the cover, it would have a massive fan base right from the start..

EDIT: Read the post above mine, he is absolutely right, but unlike MAG, a MMOFPS does not need to even have round based combat. If you die, you respawn back at a base or can drop into combat (with restrictions, you cant fly into an enemy base) via ODST drop pods. ITs possible, not likely, but possible

It won't work because Reach's fate is already set in stone. It falls. And the Covenant tend not to engage in ground battles. They outclass the UNSC in space, so after they beat the fleet, they just glass the planet. Granted, on reach, they left a few square miles to search for forerunner artifacts, but there was only a few spartans on the ground. So you would have to disregard everything that happened and create a fictional game in a fictional game.

I'll have to re-read the fall of reach, however the end of the trailer seems to imply that we're on the ground AFTER the planet has been glassed, which I don't recall being covered in depth, or at all in the books. So that means Bungie COULD take this in any direction they wanted as far as story. The amount of space that did not get glassed is negotiable, they could make it as large as they wanted and could fit an MMOFPS

I am just playing the devil's advocaste with these posts, I think it is a cookie cutter FPS. I would like an MMOFPS, but I do not believe it will be. I am jus trying to show how it is possible, not plausible

The trailer starts as the Covenant Slipspace jump in the system, and as the spartans land on the ground. It hadn't been glassed yet. And it's not just the area that wasn't glassed, everyone except 2 spartan teams were dead. Not enough for MMOFPS.

"Tri-St8 T Party"

I posted a similar topic yesterday regarding the possibility of an MMOFPS. I didn't search and look for previous threads because I was bored at work and had some time to kill. From my perspective it is a possibility.

In my post I put a link to an article that showed microsoft posted a job listing for programmers looking to build servers to support a user base of 300k + users. This could easily be the backbone of an MMOFPS. Bungie has stated in their WWU that Reach is an FPS. They did not state that it was not an MMO. They simply said it was an FPS. Bungie's PR team is one of the best in the world so they know to phrase their answers to leave their fanbase with endless possibilities.

I have read through the books, except for Cole Protocol. In Fall of Reach, there is no passage that tells us how long the ground battle for the generators took place. The book makes it seem as if the battle lasted a day and then the covenant glassed Reach. Beyond that, we do not know the exact canon that is within the Bungie Bible. If the ground battle for the generators lasted for longer than a few weeks it is certainly viable for this type of genre. Plus, who is to say that Reach is the only planet the game will take place on. Perhaps Reach would just be one of the playable maps on a given server.

Do we know that there weren't other battles within the Halo universe between Spartans and the Covenant on other planets in other systems? We know from the books that once the program went public there were numerous mentions of the Spartans taking back other worlds from the Covenant. Why couldn't some of these battles be more playable maps in an MMOFPS world. And because it is MMO, does not mean is has to have RPG elements. Planetside was an MMOFPS that incorporated some RPG elements with skill sets. But why couldn't Bungie just make their Halo experience go from a BTB game of 8 on 8 on a peer based host to a 120 v 120 on a dedicated server basis? Sure this is a stretch from the Halo we are used to but do we expect Bungie to just keep making the same game over and over again with better graphics with minor gameplay tweaks. I think as strong of a team they are, they are constantly looking at ways to set Halo Reach as a new standard in FPS gaming. A console based MMO-FPS with Halo's fanbase would be a HUGE cash cow for them. Look at the numbers that Blizzard pulls in from WoW.

You are right, it probably would not be a perfect fit for the book. However, I am not an expert on the books, but doesn't the Halo Trilogy veer away from the strict story of the Halo books, and I'm pertty sure there is not basis in the books for the ODST game.

If they did a MMOFPS (and I understand that is a big IF), there would have to be a some sort of home base for the humans and covenant (could even be a ship for the covenant, that would work right?). The story would not be linear like all of the other Halo games, there would not be a definite end with Reach falling the whole game would probably be based just on the war of reach. It would a snapshot of the over battle.

There would be plenty of races and classes to choose from (heavy weapons, snipers, covert, engineers, Etc. and marines, ODST's, Jackals, Elites, Brutes) . There could be missions for leveling up and gaining weapons and equipment which would be like coop campaign missions, general battles to control key areas which would be like TDM or bomb planting, CTF types games, and simply raids and battles that would take place throughout the PvP world. All as a FPS. It really isn't that far fetched, of course this is all obviously speculation.

For the most part, they fit together well. There are very small inconsistency's. Like Master Chief's personality differs a bit from book to book to game(different authors). But no inconsistency on this grand a scale.

It was pretty straightforward that the battle of reach was pretty short. Look at it from Chief's perspective. He slipspaced in at the beginning, fought for a few hours, got his ass kicked, and retreated(cue halo 1). There is no arguing that. The spartan team on the ground held out for a few days or weeks, but that was just a handfull of spartans. Can't make an MMOFPS out of that. It would only work as a seperate multiplayer mode, and not the main focus of the game. The game is Halo:Reach. It could be possible in future Halo games. Just no this one.

I think you are thinking way too in the box/out of the book. And you may be 100% right, I just really hope you are not. If Bungie comes out with yet another linear campaign, with the same basic multiplayer, with a few gameplay tweaks, weapons, and characters I am gonna be pissed.

There is obviously still a large community to will play the same old Halo BR fights for life, but I just had to move on. Halo's multiplayer is great, maybe the best, but I (and pretty much all my friends) have lost interest. Someone needs to comeout with something fresh to add to the FPS genre. New guns, characters, and levels all in the same format is just getting plain old.
