I don't think there is seeing that the game takes place in the streets of New Mombasa, so there won't really be any room for it. And plus, how would an ODST kill it?

You answered your own question. Topic fail.

I am LordCarnage. Just because you cannot see me doesn't mean I am not there. Just because you cannot hear my blade doesn't mean you are safe. Just because you are far from me doesn't mean I cannot kill you...

No sadly not even though it would be cool to kool to fight a scarab as an ODST. Firefight with a scarab would be pretty intense.

Not completely unlikley. do you not remember where we first encountered the Scarab? Oh yes, thats right: New Mombassa. So why not? Although most of the screens we've seen show NM to be a very enclosed place, Halo 2 also showed it to be quite open as well. So while it may be filled with tight streets, there's always the chance for a large open area.

Of course, what makes this slightly less unlikley is the massive explosion that caused Momabssa to get into the state it's in. While many structures survived, a Scarab would likley be destroyed or badly damaged. However, there is a chance that some may have been repaired, survived or been recently dropped in.

As for killing one, let me take you back to Halo 2 once again. Not once did the Chief risk being shot at by the Scarab's guns, only its crew. So it's perfectly likley that we'll encounter something similer in ODST.

In my opinion, fighting a Scarab in ODST would be an awesome experience and while challenging (Especilly in Ledgendry), once you'd finished off, you would feel ten times the accomplishment you felt in H2 or H3. Hopefully Bungie will have placed one somewhere in the city as some form of boss battle and one that I and many others would happily finish again and again :P

Perhaps in a cameo maybe, but I honestly doubt you'll fight against one. Remember, you're not a Spartan....

It would be cool though if in one of the levels the Covenant had two or three Scarabs scouring the city for human survivors and your main objective at that point is to try and sneak around them through the rubble. And to make it even tougher, the SI would be temporarily shut down during the whole time.

Charge...BACKWARDS!

Could be, there was one in (Old?) Mombasa in H2. And one on Turf, dead from crowded streets. So, if it is on ODST, you could kill it because it gets stuck or somethin'.

EDIT: or they could possibly ODST drop on a scarab o.O

That is an amazing idea, but one that could be stretched further. As ODST is much more open world than Halo, allowing you to go where you want, you could also tackle situations in your own style. For example, in the idea you described, you could either sneak past them, fighting several Covenant on the way, or you could attempt to board them and shut them down, allowing you to stroll right through.

As for the 'You aren't a Spartan' remark, how should that matter? Scarabs can pwn you, but only if you are out in the open. If you happen to be a rooftop at the Scarabs hight, hidden in the rubble, then your only danger is the Scarab crew, which is no different from who you'll encounter on the streets.

This could be one the challanges of fighting this unique enemy. You must get out of the streets, into a building, fight your way through some Covenant to get to the top, before boarding the Scarab, killing the crew and shutting it down. Wouldn't that be epic?

That would be pretty awesome, being able to tackle the mission in different ways. I only went the stealthy route since the whole premise of the game seems to be surrounded by the stealth element.

As for the "You're not a Spartan" thing, the only reason I say that is b/c it would seem kind of far-fetched for one ODST to take down one Scarab alone. Now if there was a group, then I could see it happening. Spartan, however, were built to handle tougher situations such as those, which is why it seems more plausible for an ODST to take down a Scarab instead of a lone ODST.

Your last idea is pretty cool though. I'd like to see that. One thing I'd add is that you only engage a Scarab b/c it found your position and it chases you through the city and corners you into a building (Cat and Mouse effect). Kind of like in Half-Life 2, where Gordon Freeman is being chased by numerous Striders. It'd be awesome to see a scarab crash it's way thorugh rubble and buildings just to track you down.

Exactly! As for the lone ODST thing, yes, I suppose it may be a little far-fetched, but then, this could occur once you've gathered most of your quad together. That way, it would make more sense, you'd have other people to suggest ideas ("Come on, we've gotta get into those buildings! It'll fry us out here in the open!") and it would give the Scarab a better reason to be hunting you down; sending a Scarab after one ODSt is silly, but sending one after a whole squad who have recently been pissing them off makes much more sense :P

So in the end we have:
Awesome: Check
Possible: Check
Challenging: Check
Epic Cutscene: Check

What reason is there not to implement the Scarab?

  • 07.02.2009 6:45 PM PDT

Well, since the Scarab was primarily meant to be an excavation device I would imagine the Brute excavation party would bring a Scarab with them. But I doubt you would see it in the city at night. Maybe you would see it during one of the (supposed) highway missions.

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

This Happened in New Mombassa

So yeah, and an ODST would kill it with vehicles (hopefully this will be a difficult daytime mission.)

And no Spartan has ever taken out a Scarab completely alone, in every scarab fight in Halo 2 AND 3 there was support from Marines, Vehicles, and/or Aircraft.

This leads me to another idea:

Let's just say that the Covenant brought one of those Super Scarabs from Halo: Wars in to helps excavate the area where the portal is, and your squads' mission is to try and disable it somehow. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but in Halo: Wars you have to use a MAC cannon to help destroy it. Judging from this, the main objective for the level could be to sneak around the Super Scarab through the rubble and access a terminal to a MAC cannon station either orbiting the planet (or one possibly on Earth; I don;t know if one exists), and have the SI hack the cannon and aim it at the Super Scarab, causing an onslaught of Tungsten slugs at the Super Scarab. Think of the Hammer of Dawn in Gears of War, except much larger. However, at one point you get spotted by the Scarab's searchlight and instead of finishing it's primary objective, it starts to chase after your squad. Your squad splits up and you have to maneuver through the city through buildings and rubble, all the while avoiding plasma shots and it's legs trying to stomp on you. Once you make regroup, you split up into two groups: one will distract the scarab and the other will climb to the top of a building and access a terminal where the SI can hack in and aim the cannon.

Extremely unlikely, I know, but it'd be epic nonetheless =)

I highly doubt it because the forces that the Prophet of Regret left behind were just to secure the portal site and since they figured that most opposing forces are taken care of by the slipspace's shockwave therefore they needed less than a normal assault force.

The Sausage King of Chicago.

Well... they do have those drop pods, right? So... just launch and land on the scarab =D

Why does the entire game have to take place on the streets of New Mombasa? That's only one campaign mission.

New Mombassa was a HUGE city, you will spend ODST in just a small portion of that City.
