Please note that the following text is all speculative and imaginative and in no way represents the final game. This has nothing to do with Bungie as is merely the result of my immense boredom. Though if Bungie is willing to take the idea, then I expect royalties to be paid. I'll get my people to talk to your people.

Edit 1: Updated some stuff. Updates in Bold.

So, I was at tuition and this typically happens to me when I'm there anyway but I started thinking about Video games suddenly. Remembered all the crazy Halo: Reach Natal stuff and started thinking about Halo: Reach and stuff. An then suddenly, my mind shifted to Multiplayer. I wondered if the speculation that Reach was class based would be true and how a Class based Halo might work.

So I was thinking of how there would be Classes, each one with 2 Weapons and several other 'perks' so to say (Not specifically related to the Call of Duty perks). Each class has 3 unique perks. 15 Perks per side. You don't have to unlock these perks. They are all available for that class from the beginning.

I thought it up for the UNSC side and the Covenant Side (With all the players playing in this side being Elites) and while I pretty much got the UNSC side sorted out, I'm not done with my Covenant Classes.

So without further adu, The UNSC.

Class 1: Assault.

Primary Weapon: Battle Rifle

Secondary Weapon: Assault Rifle

Grenade Type: Frag Grenade.

Standard Equipment: Bubble Shield

Perk Upgrades:

1) Adrenaline - When under fire, movement speed increases 1.5 times.

2) Still Standing - When player loses all health, he has 5 seconds to get away without being fired at. Doing so gives allows him to survive and get his health automatically restored to 1/4 its original.

3) Frag Party - After every 3 kills, Player gains one extra Grenade.

Class 2: Demolitions

Primary Weapon: Shotgun

Secondary Weapon: Rocket Launcher

Grenade Type: Cluster Grenade ( When thrown, Spits out 7 mini-grenades in a radius )

Standard Equipment: Remote Charges and Detonators

Perk Upgrades:

1) Clean Sweep - Able to fire shotgun without pumping when under fire and health under 40%

2) Target Locked - Adds Lock-on capabilities to the Rocket launcher.

3) Cluster Stick - Cluster Grenades can now stick onto enemies

Class 3: Sniper

Primary Weapon: Sniper Rifle

Secondary Weapon: Standard Pistol

Grenade Type: Sonic Grenade ( When blown up, all enemies in a 10m radius get NAV markers on their heads for 10 seconds )

Standard Equipment: Recon Drone ( All enemies in the Drone's AOE gets NAV markers on their heads )

Perk Upgrades:

1) I see All - Opens up a Overhead map of the Map with everyone on it. Able to designate one enemy with a NAV Marker on their heads.

2) An Eye for an Eye - Every Marked enemy appears marked for allies as wel.

3) Send me out, with a bang - When the Recon Drone is destroyed or runs out, it emits a Sonic Blast, with the same effect as the Sonic Grenade.

Class 4: Scout/Infiltrator

Primary Weapon: Silenced SMG

Secondary Weapon: Silenced Pistol ( AutoMag )

Grenade Type: EMP Grenade ( When used, all players in the blast radius get their screens all fuzzy and their weapons don't work for 3 seconds )

Standard Equipment: Flare and Auto Shade Visor ( Instant Protection from the Flare's effects on yourself )

Perk Upgrades:

1) Screwing with you - All enemies in a certain radius around the player get their Radars messed up

2) Piercing Skin - All Melee attacks now utilize the Combat Knife.

3) We stole this one from you - When under fire and health under 40% of original, player automatically goes into cloaking. Effect when being fired on while in cloaking disabled for 5 seconds.

Class 5: Support/Heavy (Spartan Skin)

Primary Weapon: Spartan Laser

Secondary Weapon: SMG

Grenade Type: Napalm Grenade

Standard Equipment: Health Packs ( Constantly replenishing )

Perk Upgrades:

1) Two for the Price of 1 - Upgrades SMG to Dual Wielded SMGs and remains as such even when weapon is switched.

2) Ima Re-Chargin Ma Lazer! - Spartan Laser gets infinite Ammo but has a significantly longer recharge time.

3) That's My Ride - Earns the Ability to Hijack Vehicles.

That's how a UNSC Side Class based Halo should work like I feel. I'm still working on the Covenant but its tough for them due to the lack of proper weapons. Got it mostly finalized though so that will be coming up soon.

I also have an idea with how the 'Kit' pick-ups work. Let's say I'm a Infiltrator and I kill a Demolitions guy and pick his stuff up. I keep my Infiltrator's abilities but get everything else from the Demolitions. Meaning, I switch out my Infiltrator's Weapons, grenades and Equipment for the Demolitions' ones but I keep my Infiltrator's 'Perks'.

This could lead to some diverse on the field Class Modification. So I could literally have a Infiltrator with a Demolition's loadout but with the Infiltrator's perks still.

So what do you guys think? Sounds good? I sure hope the game turns out something like this. Or at least, Class based. The time is now.

sig goes where?

I was thinking it might be a class based Halo due to the differing silhouettes, but something more akin to TF2

It may be class based, due to the Reach banner, but I don't think it'll be so CoDish. I think Bungie is gonna come up with something different and unforseen. And if they do go with this style, they should have the ability to build your own class. I would see it going more in the direction of TF2 rather than CoD, but as I said, I see it becoming something entirely new.

'Utrinque Paratus' - Ready for Anything

Nice idea, but these are horribly inbalanced.

I didn't exactly mean for it to be CODish. I just used the name 'Perk' because that's what people will easily relate to.

That's why I don't make the games :)

That's actually a great idea. I think you are the first person who actually had a well rounded idea about classes. I have a couple complaints about some perks you listed (especially "Thats my ride") but overall this is a fantastic idea that could easily be implemented into a halo game, although I don't think it will be classed based based on all the other Halos.

  • 07.03.2009 8:49 AM PDT

Remember,
It is easy to be male
it is another thing to be a man.

I like the way that you have thought it out but i could see a problem with the last spartan class.
Infinite ammo?

  • 07.03.2009 8:50 AM PDT

I dont know about that to be honest. In my opinion it would be too restricting for halo. Although maybe you could have classes for example "sniper" and just make that class have perks to help sniping eg. higher damage on long ranged wepons or headshot lock-ons

I know what you're trying to say. I knew it would be awfully unbalanced but I couldn't really think of anything else in terms of the Spartan Laser. The Laser takes about twice as long to recharge after a shot though so that could somewhat balance it, right?

  • 07.03.2009 8:52 AM PDT

mortel mort

that would make it a mix between cod and metroid

I really appreciate this. Thanks. Thinking of the "perks" was a bit weird as its something so un-Halo and I was trying to think of some centered around the Halo universe. So, I can see how some people may find some weird.

And well, I think this is the opportunity for Bungie to try something new. The banner gave me a real vibe of Class Based and this UNSC Class System is mainly based off my interpretations of the banner.

It isn't our shiznit anymore.

Hmmm... I don't know if these classes are balanced. It seems the rocket launcher class beats everything just like in Halo 3 where the rocket launcher is the power weapon. Though I like class games like CoD, I wouldn't want Halo to become class based because that was the style of gameplay from Halo 1 all the way to Halo: ODST. There are just too many really good power weapons in the game that can't be balanced out. I think Bungie adopted their style of gameplay because they wanted to only have one player controlling a certain power weapon, and not just have games where everyone has rocket launchers. IMO I don't think this style of gameplay will work for Halo.

No, I understand, it is just that it still seams to CoDish. Too realistic, almost. I don't know how to explain it, without using that classic fanboy excuse, "It just isn't Halo." Don't get me wrong, I love class based fps, and it could work in halo. Hell, if anyone can make it work, it's Bungie. As I said before, I don't think they will follow the format of current class based fps. Nice post btw. Very well thought out.

I'll first address the Balance issue. Yep, I know. But it came out of a fan's mind. What more should anyone expect right? I tried balancing it as much as I could think of but, yea, didn't really do a great job, did I? :D

Also, I know that people think a Class based system won't work with Halo. Your point is extremely valid. And don't get me wrong, I love the current Gameplay style. But, Halo could use some sort of revamp in the way it works and maybe Reach could be just that? I mean, its time to expand right? And its Bungie. They can make it work.

Its all speculative though. Its just that the banner above gave me and a bunch of other people the "Class System" vibe.

Ah I see. Well, this would be a huge departure from the standard Halo model. But I think now's the time to expand on Halo? And like you said, if anyone can make it work, its Bungie.

And haha, "It Just isn't halo" is really appropriate. But my question is "What if it's like Halo? And we just haven't experienced it yet?"

But thanks for the compliments. This is how a thread should be like. Nice, peaceful discussion. Unlike most of the other threads around here.

Yeah. Who know's, maybe in the future, the halo gameplay model as we know it will be completely different. I would welcome a change. Something just as revolutionary as the original Halo was for the Xbox. I'm confident in whatever they do and will buy the game regardless of what it is.

It works. Obviously (as you said yourself) it needs some fixing. In my opinion, I'd switch the Demo's Shotgun for the Heavy's SMG but whatever. I have some ideas for the Covenant too. Nice work on the whole, I think this could turn into something great.
Edit: Also to create a balanced class system, your going to need some perks or weapons that can either balance out the field against the Rockets, or dumb it town a bit.

What Bungie could do that nobody is thinking of which would make a rediculous amount of sense....

They could have a Section of playlist dedicated to Classes and one for non-classes.

The Sections would be:
Classes
Ranked Class Match
Social Class Match
Normal Halo
Ranked Classic
Social Classic

HOORAH, SENIOR CHIEF!

Not to be the biggest nerd here, but in the Halo: Fall of Reach novel, there was like two or three fireteams of Spartans. Each one had a specialty, such as marksman, demo, or team leader, so its extremely possible that it could be a class based game. But i'd personally prefer the same old halo gameplay.
