Subject: Haloize

I don't know about you guys, but I believe that Halo: Reach, has more potential than anyone really knows.

Halo 3 to me was a bust. Don't get me wrong, it is a great game, but it pales in comparison to what it could have been.

Halo: Reach is a chance for Bungie to do with Halo, what they could have done with Halo 3. And that is to make the best flipping game ever.

But how? How can they make the best game ever? The answer is quite simple, but I don't think most of you will like it.

And that is to "Haloize" other games. Well, not entirely.

Halo: Reach needs to do what Halo 1 did; revolutionize how we play FPS. The basic gameplay remains the same, but other aspects are improved, scrapped, and redone.

Basically, take all the good qualities from other games (including Halo 1, 2, and 3) and make it Halo: Reach.

Imagine Halo with something similar to Far Cry's 2 map editor.

Imagine Halo with everything that made Halo 1, 2, 3, CoD4, etc. amazing games, all jumbled into one?

Especially when you consider the gameplay style is kept intact.

There is the quote that I forget who it is from, but here it is:

Everything that can be made, has been made
There is no way for Bungie to revolutionize Halo without using things from other games. I am not saying for Halo: Reach to be a a patch work quilt. But to instead gather the best qualities of other games, and refine them to fit Halo, and to be unique.

Didn't you just have this topic. Just go back to the old one and ignore the ignorant bastards who try to make everything you say a flame war.

It isn't our shiznit anymore.

I see what you are saying, but the whole idea of great games is not to copy from other great games, it is to innovate, not imitate. If Halo: Reach wants to be a good game, it has to revolutionize itself, which is what I think Bungie is doing right now.

No no, the old topic was just me letting out my frustration in an unproductive manner. This topic will hopefully not cause flame wars. Not to mention that it was about complainers.

Not to mention that I requested that my old topic be locked.

Agreed. Hopefully this thread will be met with less flaming. Look at Elder Scrolls, Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto, although that didn't change until the recent GTA IV, they all "feel" the same, but they have undeniably changed drastically. Halo has only made that drastic change once, and that was the change from Halo 1 to Halo 2. Halo 3 felt exactly the same as Halo 2, which as a result didn't deliver much immersion.

While I'm not a big fan of just simply copying and pasting another game's engine and just replacing the universe, I feel that there is no harm in taking a few things that worked well for them, for example grenade cooking and sprinting. Either way I hope there is that drastic change that never happened with Halo 3.

Don't worry, Bungie doesn't have Microsofts infamous pride. They'll take whats good from other video games, add some new, revolutionary ideas(ala halo 1), and bang, you got the greatest game ever.

We just need to draw the line between taking similar concepts and just blatant copying.

I don't agree with classes.

Improving forge to be more of a mapmaker would be nice.

  • 07.03.2009 2:42 PM PDT

I agree completely.

It's honestly time for something new with this series, the gaming community as a whole (not just Haloids) see this game as nothing special; just another Sci-Fi FPS.

They don't understand that the original Halo was just about as great as it got on a recent console FPS for the time. Driving vehicles around, having enemies you love to hate (Does anyone honestly dislike Grunts?), an original feeling setting, cool weapons (Original AR is probably still my favorite gun in a shooter) that unexpected transition from a normal shooter to a horror game as soon as the Flood appeared, it was probably the only FPS (Aside from Goldeneye) that actually felt like it was supposed to belong on the console; button layout was about as perfect as it got, and controls felt tight overall. And to top it off, 16 player multiplayer on a LAN system became some of the greatest fun you could ever have simply playing a few consoles with that many people. Overall the game was just refreshing, and Microsoft probably wouldn't have made it with the original Xbox if it weren't for the original Halo. In a way it was the first of it's kind, and they'll never understand why most of us love Halo so much..

But the thing is, after eight years it's still just about the same thing, and as much as I love Halo, I have to agree with more "recent" community of gamers that there isn't much that makes it special anymore aside from the fact that it's Halo. Nothing really sets it apart. Halo 3's forge and recording features were great, but that's all they were, features. The gameplay should be the main focus, so why not give the gameplay a little something more than 'equipment' and weapon revamping?

I'd love to have a whole new ranking system, I'd love to be able to stick a scope, or a silencer, or bigger clip on an MA5 rifle and receive debuffs to compensate. There's nothing wrong with CoD4, it's an amazing game and they made amazing changes from the previous installments (Did it change the CoD feel? No, it improved it); there's just so many Halo fans with their heads stuck so far up Halo's proverbial ass that they can't appreciate how well done other games are. And knowing Bungie, they could bring their minds together and greatly improve on the "customization" concept. Among the other suggestions that have been made.

To all the people who complain saying: "We don't need change! Keep it the exact same as it's always been!", just keep playing Halo 3, because the rest of the franchise is counting on major differences to set it apart from the rest of the series the way Halo: CE did from the rest of console gaming.

Best reply I've seen to this topic, agreed. It's confusing, why do people want the exact same thing, when they could easily just stick to the same game they're playing without spending any money? There's no need for them to try and ruin it for the rest of us by saying they want the same game we're probably going to have to pay full price, just for the same thing.

Why don't you go play Call of Duty and make funny plasma sounds while you do. Halo doesn't need that -blam!-. Bungie needs to build off of Halo CE and perfect it. Some of the changes through out the series have taken away from what made the first Halo so great. Halo CE is by far the best game I have ever played, followed very closely by the original Perfect Dark. I hope Bungie does the fans of the original a favor and forget about you the new fans, they will buy the game anyways because they are mindless.

Believe it or not, they tried to make Halo 3 alot more like Halo 1. Look where that got them. I'll give you some advice. Something can live a good life, and die peacefully. When that happens, we should not prod and poke the corpse, hoping to bring it back to life.

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

ODST;MYTHIC Screenshot winner! One of the first to get their hands on the mythic map pack.

Like this :

Halo: Marines:
This game is where you are a marine. It is a prequel, a prequel to even Spartans. So there won't be Spartans in the game, you face off against rebel forces. You get killed with a couple of bullets, and lets say for a feature, if you get a 3-5-10 kill streak you get something special, like, you can call up the radar, or a hornet flies in and gives you support fire. Awesome game idea, right? There would be fall damage because you are a marine, you can pick your weapons before you go into battle, like classes, and as you get more expierence you get better weapons.

OR how about this game Idea:

Halo: The Flood:
You are 4 Marines, or civilians, who are trying to get from one side of the city to the other. There was this major flood invasion, and now you have to survive them. There are many more flood forms then we thought, there are some that can puke on you and make you more vulnerable or a higher priority target to the flood, and some that can grab you, and your teammates have to kill the thing holding you or you die.

How about these games ideas:

Halo: Sparring:
You pick a character, like, Johnson, or Master Cheif, or an ODST, and they fight hand to hand! They can shoot fireballs of course to spice things up.

Halo: Take it to the Flood:
You try and destroy the flood once and for all. But since you are easily infected, you have bigger bulkier armor, this stops the flood from getting in you and making you infected. Also, the shotgun seems most effective against the flood so your primary weapon is of course a shotgun. Just for kicks, the UNSC decided to put a chainsaw on your AR, maybe this could prove more effective. You are slow, but there is a cover system, for more strategic play. Anyways, to destroy the flood, you need to destroy the gravemind, to do this you are taking a bomb down there!

Halo: New Mombasa:
So this is a sequel to Halo 3, aliens and humans are getting along, you are a civillian, and you are in the city of new mombasa. There are though gangs of covenant, and civilians, they rival each other, don't like one another. So you, are just trying to make it big. So you take missions from either one of the gangs. It is a totally open world enviroment, you can use any vehicle you want.

Halo: Apocalypse:
This game deals with what would happen if the rings actually did fire. But due to some minor difficulties, some life survived on this one planet. You are a person, and you have to trek out the land and try and survive this weird world where everyone is an enemy. This is a FPS or 3rd person game, where you take quests to retrieve weapons, or food. Totally open world explorable.

I mean, these are just some of my ideas, I'm so creative don't cha think?

Rarely have I seen someone with your level of stupidity and fanboyism. How the hell do you know none of us are fans of the original. Are you. It seems you only signed up to Bnet a week ago. And you call yourself a Halo fan. Bungie has always been about innovation. If you truly loved Halo 1 you would welcome change you egotistical fanboy prick. Call of Duty is a great game btw. So go play Halo 1 until the end of time and continue acting like an ignorant 8 year old defending "teh gr3atest gamez EVA".

To be honest, a game to me isn't the multiplayer, but the campaign. Bungie need to make a vivid story as epic and heart wrenching as Combat Evolves' campaign; I'm hoping to see scenes of despair as the Covenant march forward, seemingly unstoppable.

I want to feel like the only thing that is keeping me going is that "From the Beginning, we know the end."

To many this is the opposite, well, the "Campaign" makes the game. To many the multi-player is the overall expierence.

I too would love to see some more great playable cinematic like levels. For instance, you can actually interact and look around while Dropping in ODST (I believe anyways, correct me if I am wrong). But things like that just make the game so much better, to be in the shoes on someone who is doing something absolutely crazy, or being in the middle of something absolutely amazing.

For instance, in Call of Duty (yes, I am crediting Call of Duty here) when the nuke goes off and it sends your Helicopter into a whirl of death, then you crash, and you crawl from your helicopter as you see the destruction around you. This immersive-ness is something that I love.

I hope more things like that will be in the campaign, like, you see the glassing going on as it happens, and you try and escape. Something amazing.

The final level could be us escaping the planet in a Warthog before it is glassed...that wouldn't be cliche at all.

That would be pure epic win. I was actually thinking of that a couple days ago :P

Oh yeah It's Rayzed.

No grenade cook or sprint, Spartans are always sprinting. Don't take things from the CoD universe. The games are boring and shouldn't infect great titles like Reach.
