I haven't been a member of bungie.net for long, but I have played Halo a while. We pretty much have a LAN party every night and I play XBC regularly. I believe that we should begin a Halo strategy thread and help discuss different map strategies and weapon strategies. I read over the sniper strategy posted and it was very good, moving slow and patience is very key in sniping but I have some things I'd like to add.
Halo consists of more than Blood Gulch and Sidewinder, and on many maps the Sniper isn't as easy accessed. A key thing to learn is nade points, being able to throw a grenade in order to make the sniper land near you, while you are under cover. A good example is behind the bases on Hang em' High. There is many ways to find nade points, nading videos by great players such as Taskrok is the easy way out.
Once you have a sniper rifle the key is to find spots where you can't be seen but not to camp these spots, to move between them consistently. I find it very useful to move between five corners of Hang em' High and also stay up top of Prisoner and move within the tunnels so that I can easily see the Overshield area as well as the bottom.
The primary key to sniping is accuracy, a good sniper can kill consistently in 1 shot, and at the most 2. Being patient is a virtue but is not always the best thing to do... because the longer you wait the more enemies that will line up and risk you being seen. If you snipe someone try to snipe someone who is alone and try to score a head shot every time. Lead when sniping, always keep your reticle in front of your enemy's head in the direction they are moving.
It isn't a bad idea to snipe into a crowd, making sure you have your reticle leading and partially red you can usually score 1 to 2 kills before having to duck for cover. I stress ALWAYS keep moving, after you kill move to another spot that isn't as obvious, and make your rounds around the map. Each map has spots that are well hidden, mostly staying up top and in corners is the best strategy, staying hidden within the shadows.
Also, always have your BEST weapon handy as your backup weapon. The pistol is usually best but if you are snuck up on then the shotgun is handy to use. Never underestimate the power of grenades if you are being closed in on either, throwing a few well placed grenades can not only kill your imposing foe, but also save your ammo that will be needed once you are in the clear again. If you fear you are being closed in on, back up, take cover, place grenades.. and ALWAYS stay under cover until your shields are back up.
Last but not least, if you are camping a spot make sure to keep an eye on your sniper ammo and be prepared to either nade more ammo or go and get more ammo when you are low, move toward the spot nearing the sniper ammo when you are down to around 4 shots so you aren't left empty at the wrong time. Stealth is a sniper's primary weapon, along with their accuracy.. the two combined can be the deadliest combination.
I would love for anyone to post their strategies in this thread, no matter what it may be. Also feel free to ask about other things, if I don't know I am sure there is someone who does who would love to help.
