Okay, I'm trying to play it online with a friend and I have followed gowebs instructions to be able to play online, and I made sure my friend did it the same (I did it for him). I opened Marathon 2 using the Aleph One (or are we supposed to open it the other way still), but I can never get us to be able to join eactother. I can create a game but he can't join me, well actually it just shows the room ementy. Anyone know what to do?

Deaf's idiocy aside, your problem is probably different versions of A1.

Are you on a lan, or trying across the net? Did the gatherer give the joiner his IP address to use? Did you read the readme about firewalls? Have you opened the ports?

Sorry if you've done this already, but I have to ask to find out what might have gone wrong...

We are trying over the net. I bekieve I gave him the right IP, it showed (when I went to find it) a "server IP" and "client IP", which do I use? I did not read the "read me", is that in the Marathon 2 folder? Opened the ports? Sorry, I am somewhat new to all the computer stuff, what is that?

Your best bet is to start by reading the "Networking Users Guide.txt that comes with AlephOne. It gives an overview of what is required as well as specifics, like what port it uses.

You can get your IP address (as it is seen from the outside world) from http://www.whatismyip.com/

As for the ports - tcp/ip traffic (the underlying protocol that drives the internet) allows programs like alephone to connect to each other by ip address and port. A port is like a hole that the game data passes through.

Are you using a router or firewall of some sort? if you are, you will need to make sure that the port is open on the router, and that it forwards packets to your machine. I can't help you with this as there are many different types of ADSL router, I only know mine.

If you are using a modem, then all you need to to is make sure that the windows firewall lets data in on the right port.

hope it helps
