Bungie threw around the idea of a possible custom games search for Halo 3 that would allow you to search and join customs sorta like in Halo for the PC. It would be sorta like the Gears of War Player Match setup. But for some reason in which I do not know the idea was either cut tossed or just plain didn't make it in the game.

Would you like to see a custom game search in Halo 3?

Just think none of your friends are online and you really aren't in the mood for matchmaking so you go to the customs search and look for a nice game of infection so you search the games list for infection and if you go over the different games on the list and when you're over top of them it shows player count player limit map and all the other various game details. If you are the Party Leader of the game you can set the game to invite only, friends or everyone(matchmaking).

What are your thoughts?

I would actually prefer it over matchmaking...

i signed in just to say - OMFG yes plz i really think halo needs this it has such good custom game abilitly but its hard to use it without a custom search or drop down list. bungie should support customs A LOT more in Reach

"Hello, my name is iApothecy, or just Apothecy (previously FastAndFurious5). I have been with Halo since the beginning. I enjoy making screenshots and occasionally maps."

Bungie All Star Week 12 winner.

That's not actually a bad idea.

Oh, god, HELL Yeah! Just give the host the choice of wether or not to allow people to enter.
This would once again change Halo drasticly, and it would certainly be for the best.

It would exponentially raise replay value, and keep the fans around longer.

This makes a LOT of sense.

Reasons why this should happen:
> Forge maps would be more popular
> Custom game types would be more accessible
> DLC would actually have to place to live and thrive even if half the population is too cheap to purchase it
> More people would populate Halo's Live community because they can play what they actually want to
> Less people would complain about stuff that they can/can't do on the forums

Another interesting thing that could be used when making the games is setting up the ability to use or not use SPARTANS or Elites or make certain teams fall into one of the categories in order to set up your own simulations/situations when forging new maps.

Thats the only reason I think they may have done away with it for Halo 3. They figured it would take away to much population from H3 Matchmaking. But I think Bungie noticed that with an experience system like in Halo 3 people will play just for the EXP so matchmaking will really never go to dry in population even if their was a customs search. I don't want to jinx my thread but I'm surprised their aren't any no's yet just because of what I just stated. I was waiting for people to say it would kill matchmaking.

If everyone would leave matchmaking if there was a custom search then there is DEFINITELY something wrong with matchmaking and maybe they should consider rethinking it to be something more along the lines of a custom game search in which you could still be matchmaking, but searching for a specific map or game type. I know I hate playing matchmaking and I get a great map with a crappy game type and veto just because I hated only one part of the randomized game that it selected.

I'm sure their would be a slight loss in matchmaking population but I didn't mean like lose everyone in MM to Customs search.

And their is that one person on the No side I was waiting for I wanna see a response as to why it's a bad idea.

Most definitely. I went into a six month period of deep depression after i found out the custom game browser was scrapped. It was probably my biggest "must have" feature other than online co op. Something like a custom games browser would really up Halo's social element. Without a doubt you would be able to find a few friends. The only real problem is the giant amount of jerks on the internet, but that's pretty much the same as matchmaking.

The only downside I could see to this is people only playing on one map with one game type every time and getting so good at being cheap that it gets ridiculous. To combat that idea, what is stopping them from learning all the cheap spots now by playing custom games on their own or just with friends who like to be jerks also?

This is a really good idea and see how this is going to effect matchmaking but this is how I see it. Some -blam!-s get a party going and set the spawns into a hole that people cant get out of. Then the little kids get pissed and blame Bungie. I just think you should be able to join "Friends of Friends" and that would make it a little easier.

Well you could always just quit out of their customs avoid them and leave bad feedback lol

There are two options when considering Matchmaking for Custom Games

Option One
Select Premade Maps and Game Types made by Bungie (Custom Match Making)

Option Two (Similar to use in PC games)
-Search all games and use keywords such as the game type or map that you want
-Leave a game if it sucks
-Bungie creates an avoided list for you for players that create crappy maps that make the game no fun (a system similar to one they ALREADY have in place)

A Five star system would be nice. I rank your map 4 stars. It averages it all up, and we can see what maps are good, or bad in the actual game, and we can actually vote in the game instead of going on BNET.

An in-game map ranking system = great idea. This would not only help people new to the game find maps that the community really likes, but it may also get unknown map designers' ideas onto the ranked matchmaking system.

With the promise of potentially getting recognition for their work others may begin to get more creative, making more content available than ever.

I can see no way that Bungie would discount a system like the option two that I outlined coupled with the map ranking system because it would not only make the people that want it happy, but it would also produce a lot more map variants for those who wouldn't utilize the new system because they are only playing MM.

Oh i do very well love this idea so.

I also love this idea. It's a lot like the Far Cry system. Bungie needs to implement these things into Reach.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite airstrike.

Yes, considering these three conditions are met:

1) By default, custom games are not advertised to the search engine.

2) Results are displayed on their own dedicated screen, like the Source search engine found in TF2, CounterStrike etc. and if the first game is unjoinable, we can choose another without re-searching.

3) When looking at search results, you are able to look at a good overview of the gametype, map description and if you really want to, view all of the settings for this gametype.

  • 07.06.2009 4:15 AM PDT

yes, it should keep halo 3's style of matchmaking, but there should be a search for customs. it should be choices such as

GAMETYPE :

MAP :

PING/LOCAL/COUNTRY :

and bungie...PLEASE make you can search by COUNTRY NOT LANGUAGE FOR GODS SAKES!

  • 07.06.2009 4:40 AM PDT

that would be really nice and sweet :P
