Of course he could change and develop throughout the game (although I doubt it), but how would you describe what the Rookie is?
I know he's, from what we've seen, a silent protagonist, but for some reason, perhaps through animation or the general vibe an ODST helmet gives off, I've just noticed that the Rookie has a very distinct personality. He's no Samus and especially not Gordon Freeman.
The three main characters of halo games, imo are:
Master Chief is someone hardened by war. A human becoming less like a human and more like a machine. A very get the job done type of guy. He does show emotion although quite subtly. Very badass, but not forced.
The Arbiter is simply put an elite out for revenge. However, his main role is showing relationships. He demonstrates the problems between the prophets and elites and then shows the growing of bonds between the humans and covenant. If you played Halo 1 or Wars where the covenant was pretty much just seen as an enemy, he's definately something unique.
Cortona is the inverse of the chief. She is a AI becoming more human. She shows a ton of emotion and during the Halo 3 campaign she talked in skewed quotes from the book Reach that Hasely made. She's becoming a different person than who her Ai's based on.
So the Rookie. Perhaps as his name implies? Someone who's a newbie? Wondrous as to what he's doing although maybe scared at the same time?
