Hello folks, earlier this afternoon I came up with a new theory in regards to what Halo: Reach really is and why Bungie would be making a Prequel.
To begin with lets look at all the facts we currently know. It is a prequel to Halo: Combat Evolved meaning it came before the first Halo and it takes place on the planet Reach which was a major UNSC stronghold. Also we know that there are what appear to be Spartans in the launch trailer and we also know Bungie has stated that the trilogy involving the Master Chiefs story line is closed. This is also the first time in Bungie history that they have included more than one Spartan in trailers and video games if those are Spartans.
This leaves room for many different story arcs and it seems Bungie has chosen to tell the story of the Planet Reach and/or the Spartans themselves, not just the Master Chief. Now in my opinion since the Master Chief story arc (Halo 1, 2 and 3) is closed, that means this new game is going to have its own individual story arc and what better to pick from than the story arc that is covered in the books.
I believe that Halo: Reach will cover the Spartan II project as a whole rather than just the battle of Reach. My reasons for thinking this way is because first off, the battle of Reach was actually a pretty fast battle. The Covenant jumped in system, decimated the UNSC fleet, launched massive ground assaults, glassed about 90% of the planet and left only a small fraction left where they began to dig for Forerunner technology. If this is the case, the battle could be told in no more than three hours because there really wouldn't be that much game play.
My second reason for feeling that this new game will cover the Spartans is because the story of the Spartans spans for over 20 years of constant battles which is more likely for a video game. Also seeing as how Bungie loves rich story lines, what seems more likely- A couple hours of nonstop battles with hardly any story or a fantastic story about the rise and fall of the greatest military program to have ever existed?
So IF i am right about this and the new game is about the Spartans, then how will it play out? Well here is my idea.
Halo: Reach- The story of the Spartans, from their training as children, to their battles fighting the rebels, to their first encounter with the covenant, the battle of Sigma Octanus IV, and finally the ultimate test of their strength defending their home planet of Reach. This would not only satisfy gamers but also include a rich story line filled with wonderful cinematics.
Now that is what I believe the first game will be about. That's right I said first game. If this story, unlike the original Halo games, does follow a parallel with the books than it is no doubt that Bungie can include more sequels to this game. I feel that two more games will spawn from Halo: Reach which for now lets just call them Halo: Reach 2 and Halo: Reach 3. Here is what I believe the next games will cover.
Halo Reach: 2- I think that this game will begin with the Spartan defense of Castle Base on the mostly destroyed planet of Reach. After that I think that it will actually switch back to the Master Chief who had just finished destroying Installation 04. Along with Sgt. Johnson, Cortana and a few others I believe that the game will show their struggle to capture a covenant ship and their fight back to the Planet Reach. After this I am sure it will show the Master Chief and the Spartans rendezvous at Reach and then the battles of the Rebel colony and finally their journey home as they battle aboard the Unyielding Hierophant
Halo: Reach 3- This game will most likely detail the Spartans on Earth and flash back and forth between them and the story unfolding on Onyx.
If I am right than these games will probably come out in 2010, 2012 (Since ODST and Reach are out Bungie will probably focus full attention to Halo Reach 2) 2014 and by 2016 we will finally see what happens after Halo 3. I know it is a long time away people but the first Halo game came out eight years ago, so what's seven more years?
