I like the idea of Jackal shields in Reach, but they could easily be unbalanced. I believe this may be a good way for them to work without destroying gameplay.
-Picked up as a dual wield weapon: Left hand.
-If shield is damaged, it can regenerate. If the shield dies, it can not.
-Deploying equipment, using a melee attack, and throwing grenades will drop the shield.
-Shield's energy levels appear as a green bar under your standard shields.
-Player speed lowered slightly while carrying.
That way, the player with the shield can only use dual wield weapons, so he cant snipe everyone from behind a shield. If he is damaged, he can take cover and regain shields, but when they die they are finished for good. The shield can not be used to protect the bearer from what would normally be suicide tactics (dropping a grenade at close range, throwing a trip mine at a nearby enemy, or blindly rushing and using melees).
