Now all of this is hearsay until Bungie says otherwise but It's my opinion and observations.
Yea I've read all of the hypothesis about Master Chief and the Halo 3 legendary ending and I've made my own, but we have to come to accept something:
It's probably not Master Chief going to Reach in the past.
As much as we want to know about the Chief and want to know what happens with him, he's an overplayed character in a long list right now. There are so many other characters and people to learn about in the Halo Universe that there is really no reason for Bungie to reuse him.
He was there for the initial three games and that's fine, but more than likely, the next time we see him it will be someone else rescuing him from the far reaches of space (or someone else seeing him in a cutscene during Reach).
The game reach, as I have come to accept, is the visual telling of the book. There is no connection to Halo 3. The message at the beginning of the trailer was basically saying: You know how it ends, now play how it begins. That's it. There was no cryptic message or hidden wordplay.
Bungie is beyond capable as far as storytelling to make us fall in love with another character. Sure everyone wants to hear about the Master Chief and his new adventures and what not, but in an ingenious move by bungie we probably wont be hearing about him for quite some time. As previously mentioned he was reused, but also, he was all powerful. He was immortal persay.
Imagine being connected to a character you created. Hes awesome but after a couple years you grow bored of him. No matter what you do, people yearn for more. Your solution? Put him in stasis. Put him somewhere where you can go back to him whenever you feel like continuing with him. This is the Master Chief with Bungie. His story for right now is spent and Bungie is waiting to use him again.
Now if Bungie comes out with a message that he has come back from the future than whatever, but I'm saying that it more than likely (we're talking 777% here) that he isn't coming back from the future and we wont know what happened to him for a couple years.
There is a lot that Bungie has room to do now, including what happened to the Chief, but he isn't at the top of the list.
