Subject: Do Books Exist?

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

This is a question I put to you people... Its not as dumb a question as you may think. To proove that, I'll tell you a little story.

<Ahem!>

One day in yet another boring English class (sorry, I just find it boring... necessary, but still boring), my teacher asked the class, "What two literary work types have I tought you to underline the titles of in your essays?"

So, I replied, "Plays and Books."

And the teacher said to that, "Wrong, books do not exist..."

Narrowing my eyes to a humorous glare, I picked up the novel on my desk (I forget the name of it), and said, "See this?! Its a book!"

.... She didn't really have anything to say to that...

Granted, I should have said Novels rather than Books, but to satisfy my curiousity, I'd like to know who you think was in the wrong...

Do you agree with me? Should "Books" have been considered as just another word for novels in my answer to her question?

Do you agree with the teacher? Was I damn wrong to consider "Books" as another word for novels in my answer to her question?

OR

Were we both wrong? Should it not matter either way?

<clears throat> Believe it or not, this happened two years ago, and the situation just now popped in my head...

I don't care. I only read the ones that say "Halo" or "Starwars" on the front.

..... That's not exactly an answer to my question, but oh well. Since you didn't answer it, I'll ask another:

Are the Starwars books any good?

Teachers sometimes like to play the condescending game of definitions.

It's a cheap subsitute for teaching you relavent information.

The Starwars books are great if you like Starwars, but I suggest you try to read them in order.

After about 5th grade I felt that anything useful I learned, I learned by myself.

Amen. And if the paper is typewritten, shouldn't book (novel, whatever) and play titles be in italics?

And books do exist. Just because books can be subdivided into novels, novellas, non-fiction works, etc., doesn't mean that they don't exist. I'd say you were right.

No, people who dont go to school suck... what the hell are you going to put on your resume? eggs? "Oh i dident finish school...it sucks"
Its people like this who need be tought a lesson in the fine arts of "Get your ass in line or die"

I got to school but I dont like it... I never learn anything worth learning.

"Book" is general, "novel" is specific. So every novel is a book but not every book is a novel. Therefore your teacher is quite correct.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Well, she isn't my teacher any more, because I'm no longer in high school.

And although I value information, as well as see the necessety of going to school, I, like Jnice, think it sucks.... I honestly don't see how prison is that much different. You're stuck inside a building almost all day... with many people you don't like, or who don't like you... and crappy food...

I know not all people think this, but there are some who do (including many teachers in my school). I also know that yes, high school isn't exactly like prison, since prison is usually associated with criminals, and even less freedom.

And are titles of novels and plays always italicized when in type-written print? Seems odd, to me, since I've always been tought to always underline them... yet I have seen them italicized many times... But I've also seen titles of short stories, songs, and poems italicized as well. Perhaps both are acceptable? Or is my teacher incorrect? I've had incorrect teachers in the past, but this teacher doesn't seem like one to make that sort of mistake... always telling us that its going to "be that way" in college, and what-not...

And for future reference, I'm not too bent on whether or not books exist... it was just a funny little circumstance that I brought up to see others' opinions.

Ah, she was a good teacher.... she always had funny tales to tell and such... wasn't too strict, either.

I think school sucks, but I know I must attend. I have to do all the real learning at home on my own though; Japanese, and more importantly 3D modeling and animation with a little texture creation on the side.
