Subject: Keep YOur CD Key

We can bomb the world to pieces, but we can not bomb it to peace.

-Micheal Franti

If you listened to the podcast that just came out today you should know we heard from a Bungie employee who is "carrying the Halo PC torch singlehandedly" that our CD key will be important in the near future. Any speculation what this might be for? What about you sawnose any hints to what that might be for?

Whoa, what? Could this be a potential update?!?

Hearing this makes me want to say "Omg". Srsly.

But I won't say it.
'Cuz I'm cool like that.

Some are saying it's Cerebrum Synapse which will be a stat tracking for CE, which so far sounds similar to the stats tracking Halo Anticheat does for the PC (revamp soon), but hopefully it'll be something more interesting than that.

We can only hope. ;)

More interesting than a program that's required tons of research into the game engine over many years? You make Cerebrum and Synapse sound like it's nothing more than a shoddy script kid program that anyone with some basic knowledge could do.

Think of it like Halo CE matchmaking/achievements/stat tracking, just like what's available on Bungie.net with Halo 2 and Halo 3...

Honestly though, I doubt that Roger was referring to Cerebrum and Synapse anyways because the Cerebrum and Synapse developers haven't contacted any official authority (such as Bungie) about their project...

  • 07.08.2009 12:37 AM PDT

Roger says during the pod cast he kept the source code around.

So an update of either Halo or Halo CE seems to be in to place.

I think we can assume it's only multiplayer related.

A lot of options here:

-New Maps
-Awards
-New Gametypes ( zombies, bomb, griffball?)
-Rankings
-New colors for MC ( patterns and logos on his arm and all)
-Masterchief model update
-Covenant selection ( play as an elite?)
-Wrath vehicle? ( we have the tank so why not?)
-Descent server stats tracker ( please please please >.< )
-no lead? (<-- doubt it)
-Co-op? ( <- maybe in my next life?)
-GFWL? ( dear god no :P )
-Level boundaries fixed, no more glitches ( <- would it? )

My top 3 guess would be:

-New Maps
-New Gametypes
-Awards

Btw could this be a small scale market research to see how people react on new features on the "old" Halo PC? For a future planned Halo 3?
Which would be a positive sign!! Since they are looking back at the basics of what made Halo PC great. Just a random guess though :P

That's not what I was saying and I can't say anything about how much effort was needed to make it work since we've not seen any of it in action.

My point is that a stat tracker for what's basically a dead game (CE, not PC) is already public and wouldn't make sense to keep secret, and I'd be hesitant of handing over my CD key to them as it seems to require. It does tie in nicely with what was said, but still.

Something that's being kept secret wouldn't be very interesting if it was something that had nothing to do with use of the official source code (since it was somewhat implied) and was already public knowledge.

Like the rest of the HPC community though, I'll be waiting with bated breath! :)

All I ask is that you don't try to capture me.

This sounds exciting, but I'd prefer not to get my hopes up. Some sort of massive content/netcode/networking update to HPC sounds extremely unlikely.

I bet they're combining Halo PC and CE. Dunno if you'll still have to download maps from internet or not, but I bet they're combining them.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

Whatever they are doing I hope it screws over all the dildos who pirated the game.

I only care if they're not playing on 1.08 (which they won't be)! ;)

Moose Mayhem For ALL!

The CD key could be used to unlock extra characters or armor in Halo ODST or Reach. I am guessing there is a different method for those who have the Xbox version and for the PC a CD key is required. Better go dig mine up

Let there be CHAOS!

I have no idea what to expect but I definitely know what I would want:

1. Fixed netcode (no more -blam!-ing leading seriously)
2. PC and CE combined
3. Auto-download for custom maps
4. No more graphics problems with Nvidia 8000 series (turning off decals is lame)

This would make Halo PC perfect to me. Hey, a man can dream can't he?

EDIT: Actually I just thought of something else interesting. What if they are releasing it on Steam? They could enable us to attach the game to our account if we already own a CD Key. Something like this would be a #5 on my list above, definitely.

They can't fix the netcode without extensive work, ain't gonna happen. Besides, the lead is part of the game and after 5 plus years it would make no sense to have everyone relearn how to play the game.

Relearn?... Just aim at your target...

But yeah, I know it probably won't happen. Like I edited in above though, I think the idea of Halo PC getting added to Steam isn't too farfetched, especially since he specifically mentions keeping our CD Key... I mean why would he say that if it was just an update? (That is if it actually has something to do with Halo PC itself, and its not just some Bungie promotion for one of the new Halo games or something retarded like Recon armor)

I don't think Microsoft are going to allow their product to be added to a service that's in competition with their own.

Besides, who would actually want HPC added to that giant DRMfest that is Steam? Package it up nicely and offer whatever features you want, but it's still nothing but DRM.

Microsoft has a digital (game) content delivery service?

And even if you're talking about GFWL, that shouldn't be a problem. Fallout 3 is on Steam and its got GFWL...

I like Steam very much. There is no DRM preventing you from installing the game numerous times or any of that mumbo jumbo. There is more intrusive DRM on the physical copies of games in stores. You don't have to worry about losing hard copies of your games anymore. No product keys, no fuss. Plus Steam is bringing back lots of classic PC games, essentially making these games originally on 3.5'', 5.25'' disc etc. playable for the foreseeable future. Steam can help level the playing field for smaller developers that have an excellent game but can't necessarily get it into stores. It cuts costs for little guys, reduces waste, saves the Earth blah blah. Steam has done very well and I think they could basically save PC gaming from further free fall. Digital distribution just makes sense when done right and for a fair price. Look at ITunes... I'll actually be buying the new Secret of Monkey Island episode today on Steam. Saves me a trip to the store and trying to figure out if that store even has it. And the best part about Steam is that it is completely free, your games are forever yours and all in one place and you can move that entire library of games with you from computer to computer. No monthly fees, no memberships to renew or pay for, it just works.

So, can I sell those games I paid for once I'm done with them? Nope.

Could they decide to ban all my games at once for no reason and leave me with nothing? Pretty much.

1. Er, good luck selling used PC games period.

2. Well sure, they could; I can't imagine why they would though unless someone was using the account for something illegal. The chances of Steam just randomly shutting down my account for no reason is about as likely as your house catching fire and burning down, taking all your game discs with it.

What do you mean good luck selling used PC games? It's not difficult.

I can't imagine them doing that either, but hey, they 'accidentally' banned my original Half Life CD key when they first introduced Steam and never bothered sending me another despite their promises.

Then there's the issue of playing games on other machines, especially those without net access. Being locked out of most of my games if something happens to my net doesn't sound fun. Oh, and LAN events too.

Anyway, we should probably get back to the main topic.

Sure hope it's good news for Halo PC. ;)

Lol, I think that would be for the best.

Yes, a new breathe of life into Halo PC would be nice. I miss the old days when I used to play all the time :(
