First, let me say that I love every Halo game except Halo Wars (which I do own). When I started watching the trailer I was like "Okay... what is it?" and then it said Halo Reach. At that point I figured I'd see what else was shown (if anything). Nothing. But guess what? I don't need any more details, I already can tell it's going to suck.

First off, the book was horrible. I own Fall of Reach, Ghosts of Onyx, and The Cole Protocol. The last two were awesome, I hated the first one. Why? Because it was boring. What makes Bungie think making a game out of it will be better?

Second, note the fact that there's five spartans up there. I liked the idea of one guy, front and center, as the protagonist. One super-soldier to play as? Cool, I can deal with that. But five?! In Halo CE, they put the second player in the cutscenes and altered some of the events to make the story work. Halo 2, the guy was just a clone. Oh well. Halo 3, Arby was made Player 2, everything was worked to fit him in perfectly. But five super-soldiers who are good with one thing (and that only)? BORING.

Third, can't they think of something better to make a game out of? ODST was spot-on, second best game ever made (Crackdown is immortal). Every Halo game (except Wars) had an excellent storyline. Now, let's review the books. Reach would be a candidate, but shouldn't be chosen. Ghosts of Onyx seems like the perfect candidate. Cole Protocol would be horrible. And I haven't bought the other ones (Contact Harvest sounds fairly good though). Reach would be one of my last choices.

Bottom line is that if Bungie wants to gain the loyalty of it's fans for this game, they better show us the multiplayer quite a while before the Beta is released. Every Halo game has been self-advertising so far, but Halo Reach is going to take a lot more effort to gain love.

Lastly, I'm still going to keep my hopes up for a good game and try the Beta. I know this game won't completely suck, I'm just worried it might not be near as good as some of the other games. Bungie hasn't failed me yet, and Reach is sure to have something in it worthwhile.

Just for the record, Reach isn't about the book, it's about the Battle of Reach which has only been scantly explained and there are still missing details to the puzzle.

You already know it's going to suck? YOU MUST HAVE PSYCHIC POWERS LIKE ME!

I read your thread title, and I already knew it would suck.

First off, thats your opinion. I, and many others, thought the book was awesome.

Second, note the fact that you assumed that the Spartans you play as are only good with one weapon. You don't know that. Stop assuming.

Third, Halo Wars was great, even if it wasn't made by Bungie. The story was fine. Thats my opinion. It obviously differs from yours *wink* *wink*

Bottom line is that you obiviously don't know its gonna suck. You have your opinion, but don't go saying the game's gonna suck before you even play it.

What if you play levels as one of the five spartans, each by themselves?

OK you have an opinion, and thats fine, but there are some things to consider before you pass final judgement. The game isn't even out and your complaining about how much it s gonna suck because its based on the events of the book. Well who knows how much of the book is gonna be in the game, maybe none, you don't know.
Next complaining about 5 (possible) Spartans and how well co-op worked in the other games i Have a question, WTF you talking about them including the second player in the cutscenes and they made the story work? MC was always the "last" Spartan as far as you knew in the games.
AND finally you have your opinion and here is mine. Bungie couldn't be MORE loyal to it's fanbase by making a game based on its most popular book, just because yours wasn't made into a game doesn't mean you have to bash Fall of Reach. How would Ghosts of Onyx be a fun game, it would just be you running away from a bunch of Sentinels.......wow that would work, thats not repetitive at all
Anyway, sorry if I saound crancky, I haven't gotten a lot of sleep.

I'm not quite sure why you didn't like Fall of Reach, but I, as well as a good deal of others, thought it was a great book. I actually liked it better than Ghosts of Onyx. I think that exploring origins (not just of John, but of all the Spartans) is much more interesting than investigating a new story that expands a non-major character. That said, Ghosts of Onyx was still a good book--I just preferred Fall of Reach more.

As for a Ghosts of Onyx game vs. a Fall of Reach game, I think a Ghosts of Onyx game could excel in the multiplayer, but would be boring in the campaign. It would be interesting to pit Spartan IIIs up against Spartan IIs. But imagine if you were playing a character in Ghosts of Onyx: For the most part you would be running from and taking out sentinels, which I never found to be very fun.

A Reach game however, could have a much more compelling campaign; both from a storytelling perspective as well as a gameplay perspective. Some people in these forums have theorized that the game might explore the entire book. Think of how fun it would be to storm the rebel asteroid (I think it was?) and then to do John's armor test, as well as any other missions that were in the book. A Reach game could also explore some of the third book, which had some great parts in it as well. I highly recommend reading that one also. It helps explain what happened to Kelly (as well as the rest of Blue Team) before Ghosts of Onyx.

Reach MMO. Here's to hoping.

And the people that believe "the hardcore playlists would be more popular if the rules were strictly MLG" can come off it, now. If you're not willing to support something close to your own setup, there's no reason for us to believe that cloning our own lists and stripping the variety down will attract more people. -- Shishka, Bungie.net

First, you do realize that maybe 2% of the Halo community has read any of the Halo books right. 98% only know the story by the video games. They could do whatever they want with Halo Reach and there would only be a handful of people complaining.

Second, as said above, the game is not going to chronologically follow the book as written. It will simply be about the battle with a few cutscenes to give a backstory and move the plot.

Third, you already know you won't like it? You already know you will like ODST? News flash, you haven't played either. I can't believe how many people care more about the story staying "canon" rather than how fun the game is to play.

Im not sure how you can already judge a game by a trailer that didn't even show any gameplay. You know your just any other idiot who thinks his opinion will make a difference. You know you will buy the game and play it more than the other games. Why complain about it in the first place? They are giving us more hours of gameplay and much more fun. Has Bungie ever failed is in any Halo game. No, they haven't. Like they said. The make games that they want to play. Every singe Halo game has increased in reply value. And it always will. If your going to judge a game. Do it when gameplay comes out.

There is more then 5 Spartans! Been awhile since I read reach I thought in the end there was around 70 after the training.

  • 07.08.2009 6:57 AM PDT

Dude how could you hate Fall of Reach it was an epic book. I mean really Chief pimp slaps a missile in the book.

A couple things I'd like to point out with this post.

#1. You know the game is going to suck? Really? You have deciphered this from the 30 second teaser trailer? Damn there must have been alot of things I missed in that teaser because I couldn't make an opinion out of that bit.

#2. The Fall of Reach IMO was one of the best (tied with ghost of onyx) Halo book I read. But again that is my opinion. That does not mean its going to be the best Halo game. Which means just because you think the book was one of the worst halo books, doesn't mean it is going to be the worst game.

#3. Assumptions abound! Where did you get all this information?! Where did you hear we will be playing as 5 different Spartans? Where did you hear each of them will only use one weapon? None of this has been even remotely hinted at. Besides we still don't know who Sierra 259 and Sierra 320 are. Though we do know they aren't any spartan mentioned in the book.

#4. ODST was the second best game ever made?! Wow you are a psychic! Please tell me if there is ever going to be a Marathon remake.

#5. "Bottom line is that if Bungie wants to gain the loyalty of it's fans for this game, they better show us the multiplayer quite a while before the Beta is released. "

Again opinion. Please speak for yourself because I don't want to be tied in with this nonsense.

"From the beginning, you know the end." It's the book.
You know your just any other idiot who thinks his opinion will make a difference. You know you will buy the game and play it more than the other games.
Psh, I play games that I find fun, not games that are part of a good series. If the game looks boring, I'll watch the cutscenes on YouTube.
Why complain about it in the first place? They are giving us more hours of gameplay and much more fun.
Would you say the same thing if they made a Carebear game?
Has Bungie ever failed is in any Halo game. No, they haven't. Like they said. The make games that they want to play. Every singe Halo game has increased in reply value. And it always will.
Not yet, and I like some games that most people don't. I'm not the only one.
If your going to judge a game. Do it when gameplay comes out. Like I said before, if it's anything like the book, I'll be disappointed. My $60 can go to something better.

"From the beginning, you know the end."
Does not mean its from the book, They mention the fall of reach through out the games so anyone who has played the game and listened knows that Reach was attacked and destroyed, no one knows what the game is about and no one has confirmed that it will be about the book. Like someone said before me this is just another thread about someone who thinks anyone gives a crap about their negative opinions, honestly don't you have anything better to do then come on this forum and mention how you think something you know almost nothing about is going to suck.

You also assumed it would be based purely on the book The Fall of Reach, but it'll most likely run parallel to it or involve Halo: First Strike.

Some can come away from reading "War and Peace" thinking it a simple adventure story, while others can read the ingredients on a gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe.

Blasphemy! And I own Halo CE it dosent fight the second player into the cutscenes (only like the first). And the book fall of reach I liked alot. SO shut the F UP! You can't judge a game a year before it vomes out based on one little 30 sec trailer.

The Halo REACH Script (post thoughts in thread)

Writing Lead of Whisper Studios. Check out Heron!

Look... I'm on bungiepedia!

Bungie isn't making the game about Halo: The Fall of Reach, they're making it out of the battle of Reach (which occurs mainly in Halo: First Strike, anyway). Big difference. We will probably play through a new perspective so most of the story told in the game will be new (like in this script).
