The Battle Rifle or some non-pistol equivilant will probably return again in Reach.

Why?

Think about it. What two games have scoped pistols in the Halo series?

>Halo CE and Halo 3: ODST.

What is one major gameplay feature that Halo 2 and 3 have and Halo CE and Halo 3: ODST lack?

>Dual Wielding.

The reason they killed the Halo CE pistol and transfered its niche to the Battle Rifle is because of the dual-wielding system. It makes sense, balancing a medium ranged dual wieldable weapon is very tricky, its much easier to turn the pistol into a close range weapon so it doesn't become too powerful. I mean, besides the pistol, what other medium ranged dual wieldable weapon can you possibly think of off the top of your head?

Halo 3 again has dual wielding, so again, the pistol remains scopeless, but in ODST a unique oppurtunity came along. Bungie knew that fans loved the pistol, and as much as they wanted to bring it back, they knew it wouldn't work with the dual wielding system, but since ODSTs can't dual wield, its no longer and issue, and thus, they kill the battle rifle and bring back the pistol.

So unless Reach doesn't have dual wielding (Given it's popularity I can't see bungie killing this feature [Yes, people do dual wield all the time]), we won't be seeing a scope on a pistol any time soon unless Bungie can somehow fit a medium ranged dual wieldable weapon into the sandbox in a balanced way.

Any thoughts? Just something I noticed the other night.

-blam!- the Free World!!!!

Interesting, though the Battle Rifle wasn't discovered until the beginning of First Strike, so I imagine it would have to balance out in some way. I would have to say if Bungie wanted to bring the pistol back, they'd have to make dual weilding less effective or remove it all together. Good research.

and how!

I like the pistol in every Halo game...Halo 1's was superb, but I like Halo 3's even more. Why? Because it is powerful but no one seems to be able to use it but me and the occasional other person.

Maybe they can just make the H:CE pistol unduel-weildable? problem solved.

Wouldn't stop people posting "y cant I duel-wieldz with teh PISTOLZ?

Also the BR was invented back then (in experimental stages)

Halo + Bungie = Extreme Awesomeness

The Battle Rifle existed before First Strike. Halsey just discovered a different version of it. For proof that it did exist beforehand simply look here and here.

To the OP: I agree with you on the return of the fabled Halo 1 Pistol, and I see some form of the BR returning due to my previous post.

The beginning of first strike occured minutes after the end of Fall of Reach. The "Prototype" Battle Rifles weren't magically forged in the midst of the Battle of Reach and are only availible to all infantry seconds after the book ends.

What I'm trying to say is, assuming that the game starts at the begining of the battle of reach, there can be battle rifles and it will still follow the canon. If it begins earlier than Reach and covers the stories of the spartans in various important battles in the Human Covenant war, it may be iffy then.

Don't let the Canon completely overule logic.

Look... I'm on bungiepedia!

Who says dual wielding will be back?

I think that some of the changes (slow recharging shields, health, less jump height, quicker movement, no dual wielding, fall damage) they are making in ODST is to test these features out, and to give the public wide access to the gameplay... a nice transition from Halo 2/Halo 3 to more of a Halo 1-style gameplay feel for Halo REACH.

And if dual wielding does return (which I don't think it should, since it waters down a weapon sandbox as implemented in H2/3) as it did in H2/3, then you could simply make the Pistol a single-wield weapon like they did with the Needler in Halo 3.

There is a certain point of tolerance that should never be reached.

Maybe not.
Just look at the needler.

it wasn't that it didn't exist in the halo universe yet, it was just that we didn't see it in the halo universe until later.

Hes right look at the needler.....they can just single out the pistol for duel weilds like they did in halo 3 for the needler.Possibly theyll make so its a 4 shot pistol or lower the br to 3 shot so they equal out in the game
