I'm getting a new computer very soon, like in the next week, but I'm stuck with the mind-boggling decision on what video card to buy. ATi's powerful Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition, or nVidia's 6800 Ultra Extreme? Which would you buy for the next-gen games?

I would buy nvidia's.

If every game used Anti-Alias along with all the other features Nvidia would be tossed out the window. The x800 blows it away without any new design features! Go figure.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Half Life 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. both being made for the new nvidia?

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Speaking of which, when is Half Life 2 supposed to hit the Xbox?

And to show that I'm not going to go completely off-topic, I'll say Nvidia.

I'm probably going for the X800. Even though the devleopers of certain games are "allied" to nVidia, the X800 can still get damn good framerates in their games. They'd be stupid not to, putting their own hides on the line for some video card company.

ATI ALL THE WAY

I am a rabid ATI supporter. I'm going to indulge my insatiable bias towards this argument and admit that I dislike nvidia out of spite.

That's right.

Those corporate whores lose a little ground to ATI and start pouring millions in order to get their logo plastered all over my favorite games. I don't want to be reminded that nVidia's the "Way it's meant to be played!" every time I boot up UT2K4 or Theif 3 (of course I always edit the .inis of those games so that startup vid won't play, but that's beside the point).

I don't claim to know all of the strengths of each company's cards, I've seen much better performance from ATI's cards relative to nVidia's cards in the same generation. The only downside to ATI cards is that they aren't as well supported by developers, which means that you'll often have to wait for them to patch certain issues that nVidia cards wouldn't have.

I don't know about S.T.A.L.K.E.R but I know for sure that ATI has the HL2 deal.

Damn staight! In actuality, playing on an ATi doesn't get you many visual glitches - in fact, there's only one in Far Cry, a game "meant to be played" on an nVidia, and it's insignificant; the vegetation on the Volcano map can flash off for a split second that you probably won't even notice. Seriously, my old cards were both nVidias and they were pretty good, but these days they're starting to suck.
