these are the minimum system requirements right off the box (note: minimum doesn't mean you will get that great performance. It's recommended to have at least 1.5 times of what the box says.):

OS: windows 98SE/ME/200/XP--128 MB RAM
Processor: 733Mhz.
Hard Drive: 1.2 GB
Video Card: 32MB/3D T/L capable (transform and lighting)
Other: 8x CD, sound card & speakers/headphones
Online: 56.6 kbps modem or LAN; Broadband to run a server

Is it just me, or did they kinda just say "well these are the specs for the x-box... so... to run on PC that should be fine" I have a P4-3.4ghz 6800-go and Audigy 2 zs notebook and I can tell you that the sound settings are EXTREAMELY importaint. YOU CANNOT PLAY WITH SURROUND SOUND WITHOUT A DECENT SOUND CARD. i found this out when i tried to run it using the realtek onboard sound. since upgradeing, no problems.

Well I don't have true surround sound speakers. Just 3d audio speakers but my onboard audio chip can handle the EAX. It messes me up though. I am used to no surround sound.

I know this is sort of off topic and almost borderline hijacking, but does anyone know a way to get Halo Custom Edition to not taake FOREVER to start up?

i have 4 sticks of 256 ram and a ATI Radion 9800 Pro and i never see any lag out side of online play unless i have a program in the back round sucking up all my ram.

just DL the halo Map maneger, it helps when your not loading all 350 maps all at once. GO HERE!

Ping can be an effect of distance from the server - and not all DSL is the same. What is its speed. FX2000? Erm...no? Doesn't exist...maybe a 5900 - that's okay, midrange.

Yes, Custom Edition takes forever if you don;t have every damn map out there. Alone it takes less than a minute, but with 300 maps it takes me 4 minutes.

Okay ping is not related to your computer it's related to your internet connection. Ping is the time it takes for a packet of data to reach its destination through the internet. the lower the ping time the less latency between you and the game server.

Indeed, if you got a ping is realted to how far the server is from you.
If you host a game, more system ram will help

There are far more things than your connection that affect your Ping. CPU is the major one. If it can't keep up with the connection, you will lag.

Update drivers: video card, motherboard, sound card, network card, etc. If you have a Dell 8400, the A06 BIOS version is the latest.

i always wondered about this....how does updating drivers help? i mean, upgrading graphics drivers wouldn't give you betetr graphiucs...would it? if so, how?

o and i tried updating my graphics card (highest res i can have without lag is 640X480 or whatever!!), Nvidia Geforce 5200 128mb. anyway, there was this program on the Nvidia website i was supposed to download and run and it would update my graphics drivers...well when i run it, its like "loading setup wizard" or whatever, then it just closes. what the fudge?

well, the new 5.6 catalyst drivers increase performance in halo by 20%. This is proof that new drivers do help in terms of performance. New drivers can increase functionallity, increase stability of the system, and fix old glitches (1.07 patch definitely does not have these characteristics).

Anyway, i would download the new drivers manually from now on. it just seems that the installation would be more successful if a user is present to change unwanted options and other things.
