Please note this is not a repeat thread of the "A more violent, gritty Halo."

Hello all.

I was recently thinking about what Halo : Reach could turn out to be if it was alot grittier. Now, I am not talking about intense gore and such (GOW). But what I would like to see is more intense, hardcore gameplay.

Just a few little ideas.

- The screen/HUD shakes, your weapon sways, and the ground thuds as you sprint.

- The battles should be sort of like Halo's Believe campaign, but not that hectic. More covie, more marines.

- When there is a big explosion near you, the screen/HUD shudders and flickers, and forces you sideways towards the other direction (from the blast), then fades back to normal. Maybe a deafening sound aswell. Example - 0:20 seconds or so.

- When driving a Warthog/Mongoose etc. the screen/HUD should flicker each time you hit a bump or jump.

- Maybe an essence of blurring when boosting in a covie vehicle. (Things flying past)

- Everytime you fall from a great height, the screen/HUD blurs, goes black a little and flickers, maybe the visor cracks around the edges aswell.

- Make the ground shake a little when a horde of grunts or such are running towards you.

- Visor cracks start to appear in the corner of the screen/HUD after taking damage.

- When you splatter someone, the vehicle dents inwards at the point of impact a little.

- Etc.

Please no flaming on my above ideas and more will be posted as I think of more.

So, what ideas do you have for a more grittier version of Halo : Reach?

I am hoping for this game to be as great/greater than all other previous Halo's and from the books this battle sounds very intense.

I still like the idea :D

Thanks - Yeah I didn't mean always flicker, but something along those lines. More like a shudder and just a little disorientation.

ROBOHOG IS VERY BRILLIANT AND STUFF.

I reckon the atmosphere of the game ought to be darker. Halo 2 and 3 always seemed a bit too cheery for an enormous war where billions get killed and the galaxy is threatened by an evil race of parasitic aliens (Who've seen too many zombie movies). Like they've caught Star Wars syndrome or something.

Yes! I would love to see it a more desperate struggle for Reach as the Covenant are destroying the Orbital MAC guns and are trying to destroy the Fusion Reactors on Reach. The last struggle to try and stop them from destroying the MAC guns then glassing Reach.

Thats an amazing idea!! I have always wanted somthing like that in a first person shooter! SO INTENSE! This needs to happen! It would redifine FPS. Just like halo 1.

Thanks for the support. I am hoping dearly that this game will be as mind blowing as the previous Halo titles. I expect this game to just blow us away with the storyline and gameplay.

I'd like to see more blood than H3, and for it not to be so colourful. Seriously the covenant are supposed to be a badass scary evil alien army and they prance around in all the colours of the rainbow. I don't mind it being colour just make the armour less shiny, like darker shades of the rainbow and dirtier to make it a little more serious-ish.

It would be nice to see in the crevices and corners of the armour to go a little darker and just darken the armour overall. As you said - it's too colourful.

I think they should make the grunts alot more aggressive. I know they are cowardly but in the books they are extremely aggressive and dangerous, hell, everything in the books are a death wish.

Another thing is (I think) in the books a charged plasma pistol at point blank range is lethal to even a spartan. That would make them more useful then they currently are (pretty useless).

  • 07.11.2009 4:30 AM PDT

I would mind a darker story and atmosphere.
Like your in the middle of a battlefield and bullets are wizzing past and explosions going off.
Kinda like Saving Private Ryan.I want it to have a kind of shock effect that keeps you thinking "HOLY -blam!-!, HOLY -blam!-!, HOLY -blam!-!" Like in the book a full clip of needles will basically rip you in 2 if they hi your intestines. And the Hunter should be the same. In the book a Hunter disintegrates one of the Spartans in Blue team's arm, but that was before the Mark V and shielding.

And I also wouldn't mind darker, grayer colors.
They should basically do the opposite of what they did from Gears to Gears 2 except lighter grey.

Yes the Hunters were a massive foe even for multiple spartans. Also I noted it's quite funny to see in the book when James gets his left arm burnt off from the elbow down. But later on he barely salutes Master Chief with his left hand before passing out.

Also I think that it should be a full scale war as you said keeping you on your toes at all times, being alert all the time and making sure you are checking your motion radar constantly. I hope it is truly mindblowing.

Yeah,I really want some levels to be HUGE!!! battlefields.
I mean it is on the main major UNSC military hub and it is also a full-scale covenant invasion. There should be more than 100 enemies on a level it should be different every time you play through and there should always be someone fighting until the battle is over.

An overcharged plasma pistol is basically a mauler... hardly useless.

As for the idea of having more recoil/shakiness: There's a bit in Halo 3 as it is, but it's subtle. I think if they added much more turbulence, it would compromise gameplay. If you get killed in certain ways, the screen will shake and distort.

I think a better way to add to the intensity would be to add some dust and smoke to the explosions/gunfire, and a bit more debris. It would make it seem a bit more chaotic, without sacrificing the precision that Halo has always required.

No, I'm fine, thanks. I play Halo for a casual, fun, Colorful, mildly humorous gaming experience. That is why Halo gets more play time in my Xbox. It's my favorite game that I always seem to fall back to when I get tired of my newest game. I'd rather not have that changed. I'm fairly certain that these ideas would turn Halo into "Just another game" for me.

I agree - But I must say that an overcharged plasma pistol (in the books) was very deadly, in fact, all plasma weaponry was. But I like your idea of debris flying around while still keeping precision in the game. I do like the sound of the game being "chaotic" as sorts, but with a more intense feeling to it.

I'm going to add your debris idea to my top post if that is ok with you :D

I respect your opinion with the casual gaming stance. I love falling back on Halo when all other games get boring (I wish my xbox wasn't dead), and I love the funny situations that occur. Maybe these gritty, intense situations can just appear in campaign perhaps? After all, Reach was a terrible struggle for the planet.

I would love to see some rebellions in the game too (human rebels) that would add alot of backstory aswell.

EDIT - Sorry for double post.

Yeah, like in the books. The first missions could be against rebels to flush out the backstories of the spartans befor fighting the Covenant.

Yes I love before the Spartans get the MJOLNIR armour, they infiltrate a rebel base in the face of an astroid in an astroid belt and blast their way out with C-12 hehe.

Remeber the Believe campaign for Halo 3, the one with the massive model of a battlefield?
I'd like Reach to look like that, smoke, explosions and camera effects like you said. I'd like a system similar to Gears of War where when a marine is near death jackals or grunts rush in to "exacute" him, by exacute i mean eat.
So yeah, i'm one of those guys who wants Reach to be extrememly violent, but knows it's just not Halo's style and i'll gladly accept it even if it's not to different from the previous Halo games, at least from a gameplay aspect.

I love the Believe campaign and the look of the all the marines fighting for their lives. I love the whole "Full-scale battle" esque type setting.

I would love to see/hear marines screaming in the background as bullets and plasma wizz overhead. Sort of like Frontlines but Halo.

Also - In The fall of Reach the Hunters actually did not care about the lesser covenant. In one chapter when the Spartans are in a museum they find a Jackal crushed by a Hunter because it didn't move.

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

I think they should either allow you to make your own HUD, or make the HUD actually really different depending on if you are a Spartan or Elite (Like the Elite HUD should be purple, as it was in Halo 2, but it should look more Alien, with Covenant markings and words. Also, with the Covenant Hud, instead of the flickering and such, it would be smoother, and would fade, become blurry, then fade back (as the Elites don't have the visors, they see with their eyes.)

And instead of Visor cracks, the corner of their vision should blur upon taking damage.

Nice ideas. I like the smooth transitions you are talking about. Maybe when you are an elite and fall or get hurt, you get a little bit of blood on the corners of the screen/HUD.

I would love to see a HUD customization feature that would be awesome and I would love to see the whole covenant markings and such on the elites HUD. Maybe the HUD could blur and move a little instead of flickering when you hit bumps while driving as an elite perhaps?

Actually, when driving, I think your whole screen should move and jolt around when you bump, or run into something, to simulate shaking around in your seat. And your controller and vision should be bumpy anyway, seeing as you are always on rough terrain, and you would have to maintain control of the vehicle manually. (Unless you are in a hovering, or slow moving vehicle, like a ghost, scorpion, wraith, or Elephant.)

I think if they do this, they can increase the speed of the Hog, Goose, Chopper, Prowler, AND Ghost to move faster and have sloppier handling, without messing up gameplay (Halo 2 hog, only a bit faster, the goose should be more like a Halo CE hog, chopper should be faster, same with the Prowler, and the ghost should be really fast, like a speeder bike from Star Wars, but MUCH more fragile than it is now.

Also, the Spectre should return, only faster, and a bit more stable, but again fragile.

I also think you should be able to crash into a rock, and permanently disable your warthog, or (going the speed of a ghost if they enhance it) Kill yourself easily.

I do like the idea of having a more intense grittier gameplay, it seems like Halo is the perfect game for it too. But I would like too see some more gore and limbs, like when you slice with an energy sword and an arm falls off. Nothing too grotesque, though. And I think that the HUD should be shakier and more affected by the gameplay, It makes more sense that way.
