Subject: Would you like a "Grittier/Hardcore" Halo game for Reach?

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

I don't really agree with dismemberment, but I would like to see darker maps, and a great change to the sword would be the Melee is your beasic Melee attack, but with the Lunge, I think instead of an Uppercut, you should Lung in and stab. Penetrate the chest with the sword (in an animation) and then drop them. The animation should be a little faster than Assassin's Creed. If they did this, the Sword would be much more reliable (for the person using it) but also much easier to deal with for a team (as the guy with the sword would have to stop moving, then start again.) And the Sword would then balance much better.

Yeah I don't really see Halo as a fitting game for dismemberment, but I do like the idea of the actual stab with the sword. I would also like some dark maps too - maybe even utilize the flashlight?

I would love to see a jungle map though at night. There should be controls in Forge to make the time sunset/sunrise, noon/midnight so there would be a chance to use the flashlight.

Imagine a gametype where there is a sniper up high looking down below at little flashes of light and trying to pick them off. It sounds like great fun :D

I want it to have a more skill-centric style of play, too. So the AR needs to be nerfed.

Yes - maybe bump the ammo capacity up a little, increase range a little, but drop the power down significantly.

And most of all - make it sound like a real gun :D

MA5K Assault Rifle (All suggestions are in Relation to Halo 3's MA5C)

Damage: 1.25x

Accuracy: (First .5 seconds of fire) The same. (.5 - 1 Seconds) 3/4 the accuracy. (1+ Seconds) 1/2 accuracy.

Ammunition: 45 Rounds per clip.

Rate of Fire: The same.

Audio: The same rumble as the MA5B from Halo CE, but with a pop for each bullet. Deeper than the MA5C.

Description: Proper use of bursting the weapon = similar power as the MA5C at medium range. Up close, you can spray away happily, but only recommended at Sword Lunge range or closer.

Another suggestion I have is to weaken the Melee attack to a 3 or 4 melee kill. More like Halo CE or Halo 2. Also, remove Melee Lunging for all Melee attacks except the Sword's Lunge, and instead have an area of effect like Halo CE (this made it harder for Noobs to melee, where good players would stand out more.)

Take these suggestions, and the Noob weapon that is the AR will be no more.

I think ALL weapons need to sound more dangerous to hear. The BR is great up close, but it's distance sound needs to be more intimidating. The Plasma Rifle needs to sound more like Halo CEs. Deepen the popping of the SMG. The Beam Rifle sound is perfect at range, but up close, it sounds too quiet. Just re-think the weapon sounds, when they sound intimidating, they are great (the rocket needs a bigger boom, the fuel rod is perfect, the Warthog Turret should be louder and deeper.)

I'm loving these ideas you keep posting. I really do want the weapons to sound alot more, well, more "Haloier" if that makes sense. I think the melee should stay the same in terms of damage but the range should just stay the same.

I do love how Bungie has done the weapon sounds at range, but they can improve a heap in that department.

I just dont believe a Spartan could kill another Spartan in 2 punches. Ever. Also, the Melee being so strong is the biggest reason Halo 3's AR is a Noob weapon (AR Beatdown) Which is why I suggest at least 3 melees to kill (like both Halo CE and Halo 2 before it) also, ever since the Melee lunge was introduced, (In Halo 2), Halo got Noobier.

Anyway, yeah, alot of people comment that I should be making games. but unfortunately it is hard for a high-school dropout. Even one with innovative ideas, and plenty of experience working with ACS (the code used in DooM, Heretic, Hexen, and Strife, all games made by ID), designing weapons, classes, multiplayer AND campaign maps and gamemodes for those games. But I made my choices.

I hear you, fellow dropout.

Anyway that is true about 2 punches being able to drop a Spartan, it's impossible, even from another spartan. The energy sheild would just deflect the force, then you have the armour, then the steel hard bones. But I guess it's just the gameplay speaking. It would be too time consuming to have to hit someone multiple times. It would be a fist fight with weapons.

I just thought of another idea. When you splatter someone, you get a dent in the vehicle at the point of impact. I mean these guys are about half a tonne with armour on.

No.

Hmmmm...

Gritty? Yes.

Realistic? Heyall naw...

Maybe something like the old Half life 2 beta except with all that green replaced with purple.

HL2 was going to be a truly twisted game :(
Freaking hackers.

Anyway, more violence, washed out, but not completely muted colors.

Dismemberment CAN work with Halo. People just don't think so because they've never seen it...

Yes....I like to camp..

To be honest..I only think dismemberment works with just the flood and I don't beleive the flood were involved with the invasion of Reach. So I don't really think that Bungie should put in a dismemberment feature. They aren't know for making games like "Dead Space", but fun (still hardcore) shooter games. I say they should just keep making they're games the way they have been making them.... Except with a better sound track than Halo 2's.... And darker, more sinister maps for Halo ODST and HALO REACH. Thats about it...

Why don't people understand love
:CCCCCCCCCCC

I think it should be kinda like SW:republic commando (in terms of HUD) were you see the helmet on the screen as if you were actually wearing the helmet looking through the visor. and when shot in the face the visor would crack and sometimes droid "blood" would splatter onto the visor and a little "laser" type thingy would act as a window wiper and repair the crack and wipe away the "blood" in an instant.

And on the inside of the helmet itself you could see your health and shields. I think it would be awesome if that stuff were in Reach Republic commando was an awesome and really immersive game.

As for dismemberment in Halo. Grunts and jackals only, I don't think it would work on bigger bad guys. But it'd be awesome if you could see plasma burning away at a marines armour and flesh, but the halo weapons never gave me the impression that the were strong enough to tear of an elites arm, although maybe blow off one of his face thingys though.

It has to be Darker and Grittier because they dont have as strong as armor as the Chief does in the Halo Trilogy so when you get hit by a grenade or an explosion happens near you the screen should shake and dirt should fly in the air and hit you screen and i want to see blood on the armor not a Mist of red spit when you die

Completely agree, Halo 3 was such a let know in this aspect after all the "believe" adverts seemed to promise to a epic war. I don't know how much is limited to the Halo 3 engine, or if Halo Reach will use the same engine (I hope not). But anyway, I want to feel like I'm in a war zone, I don't want any added gameplay that distracts the game from being a Halo game. I don't care for Gears of War level of gore, but I would like to see a more "violent" Halo world and multiplayer that still has all the environmental elements and special effects of single player. I would like to see more realistic interactions with the environments and the AI, people to swear and do stupid things when their life is in danger, just don't make it like Cloverfield.

I would also like to see a darker colour tone for any human type levels but keep the alien worlds very alien and make the weather alien too.

PS I liked your suggestions regarding the damage effects, provided its not over the top it will be an excellent addition to add some level or realism like they do in racing games.

I agree - I think that the marines and such should scream and swear just a little bit more. Keep it funny the way Halo has always been but in full scale battles lets make it sound like a real warzone. It really hard to explain what I would like for close range but non-lethal explosions. More so of a soft deafness and a little bit of blurring, flickering, and mybe you stumble a few steps.

I still agree with the violence in Halo. Don't go overboard with it (GOW), but make it just a little more violent. In the books when the Spartans switch to shredder rounds, grunts and jackles get torn apart. I would love to see a little bit of flesh etc fly off when using shredder rounds.

I would love to see a little bit of damage just from the Spartan bodies themself instead of scripted damage when the damage reaches a certain level (ex - hood breaks after X damage) I would love to see some real time damage it would be great to see. It's just up to Bungie to make an amazing game.

Exactly it said Believe in alot of the commercials and advertisements and i remember that full scale model that showed the marines losing and dieing and yet they kept fighting on knowing that as long as the Chief was alive their was hope that they could win not only the battle but as a Race...
I wante to hear the marines scream curse and wince in pain when they get hit with a bullet or grenade or when they die not just die and be silent about it and
I always thought that having a game that says Believe would make you fight harder when your gonna lose or when your about to die when your running at a Turret and grenades are being thrown all around you and blowing dirt and pieces of heated steal deep into your body and bullets and plasma rounds whizzing by your face and feeling the heat of them grave your skin and making you fear death with every step and taking shots right in the Shoulder and Thighs but staying on your feet untill you take the Hill and can say with great Pride to your Teammates "Believe"...

Bungie Read this!!!

I think it would be sweet if Halo: ODST was for Halo like what Star Wars: Republic Commando was for the entire Star Wars series.

Heh I remember that - you would get the big explosion, the shaking, then you could hear and see the debris falling on the ground. I would still love to see a the HUD flicker some way if there is a non-lethal explosion nearby.

P.S. - Thank you for everyone posting in the thread there actually hasn't been any very stupid people in the thread it's been some proper discussion. :D

Herping your derp.

Well I think I would love to play a Halo game where everytime something crazy happens (such as you suggested with the visor cracking, etc.) I would scream HOLY -blam!-!

As well, a beatdown, basically, would put some blood on the visor, or if some machine gun rounds up close would get blood on your armor. Basically a combination of Call of Duty and FarCry 2 (the part where you can get wounds that you physically see when it occurs) Nothing like gameplay but rather...game technique.

  • 07.11.2009 11:19 PM PDT

I don't remember where, but I read somewhere that one of Bungie's three projects was a darker, grittier game with a much more intense story, but it also said that it was kind of squad based. So I have no idea if what I read was true or not but yea just thought I'd say that. If I find the site, I'll post it.

I don't really like the idea of a quad-based Halo too much, but I love the idea of a more intense game. As I have said before I want this game to show the intense, inevitable destruction of Reach. In the books there are hundreds of covenant ships, and even more covenant on the ground.

I'd love to have a mission where you are in the back of a pelican and you are on a turret taking down enemy banshees that would be epic fun.

This is an incredible step forward to being able to cure Downss sybndonre mn humans bineg.s

I would like a sort of darker, grittier Halo. Maybe just to change things up. Like, maybe it's set at night, and you're not quite as strong, like you're a Marine, or something. Oh, you could have, like, a night vision type Visor, in a sorta free world-type thing!
