Subject: Would you like a "Grittier/Hardcore" Halo game for Reach?

The original BADFINGER! (the second)

I know what you mean personally i would hate the screen flickering and shaking all the time, and the cracks in the HUD would -blam!- me up the wall and could obscure your vision , same with the blurring.

I really would just like it to be as gory as the books make it out to be. If 8 year old kids can play Gears, why cant they play i little more gory version of Halo?

Maybe along the lines of CoD W@W gore. you know just blow a arm off or hole in the gut, something along those lines

I still stand by the flickering. I don't mean ALL the time but occasionally it would be a nice feature. I would still love to see the cracks. Only when you fall from a great height of get smacked in the face. They would eventually clear over time or you could turn them off in the options menu.

Please note this is not a repeat thread of the "A more violent, gritty Halo."

Hello all.

I was recently thinking about what Halo : Reach could turn out to be if it was alot grittier. Now, I am not talking about intense gore and such (GOW). But what I would like to see is more intense, hardcore gameplay.

Just a few little ideas.

- The screen/HUD shakes, your weapon sways, and the ground thuds as you sprint.

- The battles should be sort of like Halo's Believe campaign, but not that hectic. More covie, less marines.

- When there is a big explosion near you, the screen/HUD shudders and flickers, and forces you sideways towards the other direction (from the blast), then fades back to normal. Maybe a deafening sound aswell. Example - 0:20 seconds or so.

- When driving a Warthog/Mongoose etc. the screen/HUD should flicker each time you hit a bump or jump.

- Maybe an essence of blurring when boosting in a covie vehicle. (Things flying past)

- Everytime you fall from a great height, the screen/HUD blurs, goes black a little and flickers, maybe the visor cracks around the edges aswell.

- Make the ground shake a little when a horde of grunts or such are running towards you.

- Visor cracks start to appear in the corner of the screen/HUD after taking damage.

- When you splatter someone, the vehicle dents inwards at the point of impact a little.

- Etc.

Please no flaming on my above ideas and more will be posted as I think of more.

So, what ideas do you have for a more grittier version of Halo : Reach?

I am hoping for this game to be as great/greater than all other previous Halo's and from the books this battle sounds very intense.

there is no way to tell the story of the fall of Reach without being extremely violent and sad, so yes. All you sayd is great that should be in the game.

in the part of the grunts, there must be like 40 grunts for that to happend right??

the gameplay should be very emotional (even more than Halo 2; the level Uprising remember? it was just revenge, no more no less)
and the game should be more "dark" I expected that for Halo 3 but all level take place in daylight... or iluminated places, and Bunige should add some new features to the campaign (the things like ground shake and all that) and features to multiplayer to,and some extras to the campaign would be welcome.

I want most of the game to feel like the first time in Halo1 where you encounter the flood. That "Oh -blam!-, something is there" as your motion sensors ping hundreds of contacts that fade into nothing. Or during the Library level where you are left alone to face off hordes of Flood (Covies in Reach).

I remember when I first played that level... I screamed when the marine fell through the door and freaked out when the crazy guy shot me. Or when you're watching the recorded footage from Jenkins and you hear the pounding when you can play and you start flipping out trying not to die.

  • 07.12.2009 3:05 AM PDT

the introducing of the flood was my best gaming moment too!!! I never lived something like that again

Halo Reach should have those tipe of moments, but with the covenant because I think that the flood may not be in the game, anyway they can appear in "Reach Firefight" or something like that.

Halo Reach must be the most scary, violent and emotional Halo (but nothing will be like the itroducing of the flood, the best gaming moment ever)

im surprised noone said this but what ur all basically getting at is a halo more like killzone. killzone has all that. the hud shaking gun movement and shaking while running. also ur vision goes up and down as ur feet move faster. all very very realistic. im an honorable halo fan but i will admit killzone is a great game. if i didnt think the ps3 was such a waste of money id have played killzone 2 by now but oh well. always got halo haha

Ohhh 343 Guilty Spark scared the crap out of me. I was playing it with my little brother and I remember after the helmet cam seeing so many dots on the radar and we both started flipping out. I backed into a corner and just kept firing until I was out of ammo then tried to run nearly crying in fear.

All that blood on the wall was creeping us out too we would walk about 5 steps, stop, look around, then repeat.

I would still love to see a horde of grunts and jackals sprint over a hill and plow towards you screaming and swiping. Then all the Spartans open fire on the grunts and jackals and lines and lines of them keep dropping but they keep on coming.

I also agree on the game being very emotional. Just like when Linda gets hit with plasma and as John is holding her hand she asks him.

Linda - "Did we destroy it?"
John - "Yes we did."
Linda - "Then we won."

Then as she dies she lets go of Johns hand. I would love to see that emotion in this game it would just be so great. Make a few hardcore Halo fans cry. Come on Bungie hit us with your best shot.

minor effects would add to the feel, but what you're suggesting makes the chief (or whoever we may be playing) sound like a little ant who is overwhelmed by the noise of a pack of grunts.

  • 07.12.2009 5:47 AM PDT

I think that if Bungie were to make the game more violent and realistic it should only be level with something like Call of Duty: WaW at max. I don't want it to be like Gears or God of War 3 (although it would be cool to see MC rip a God's head clean off).

Voilà!In view,a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity,is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.

Does anyone else miss it when a horde of grunts would flee going "BAD CYBORG" instead of this demon they suddenly started using. Or when a charging elite was faster then any spartan. When a hunter just strafed the area and you couldn't simply pan to the side. A hunter that is so inclined could deflect rockets and flip vehicles. Cloaking on elites that you could only see the glow of their plasma weapons, The ship master and field commanders in gold armor charging through rocket fire and sniper rounds to take your head. The 30 bursts of attackers that you ran through or from instead of the brute sieges. Grenades that hurt enemies standing on them more then allies standing behind them. Grenades that exploded when hit with explosives instead of endlessly piling up in small hall ways. When cover meant that you did not have to be in another room. Tanks with carriages that a brave enough sniper could take out the driver. running to collect overshields from covenant stock piles and health packs from fallen marines. The occasional pilot with a pistol shooting back at on coming grunts. Jackles who's shield deflected sniper fire and rolled out of the way of fire. Elites that would shot plasma gernades off their feet and through stuck grunts at you. The occasional bridge that made you stop and go "If only I had a superweapon" Heck some sort of system that let you pick weapons for a mission and stock up on ammo accordingly with only so much budget so you could go in with more then you could pick up, A night vision scope on the sniper rifle which was the only thing that could reliably show if an area did or did not have a camouflaged elite. 4 frag grenades instead of 2 frags and 6 stickys, I am counting brute grenades and napalm as stickys. The strangled cries as clocked elites started hacking through marines with plasma lances. Fail safe switches on fuel rods and plasma lances. as for things that would not be from halo: combat evolved, it would make it interesting if the covenant could reload covenant weapons while the Spartans could reload USMC weapons but the factions could not load the other's weapons

I miss all those and so much more like the hording of the Flood who couldn't shoot yet would fly at you in an attempt to smack you to death, the assault riffle actually sounding like a real gun , sticking an elite and franticlly try to escape as he charge you with blinding rage in hopes of pleasing forunner Allah to be rewarded with 72 elite virgins who happen to be dudes, those same elites yelling WARTWARTWARTWARTWARTWARTWARTWART as they attacked then took cover when the had no shields and needed to recharge , Marines you really did care about and killing yourself when they died , how involved the characters were with you and your struggle , the hectic battles fighting on two different opponents on two different fronts

also for Reach a darker more emotional storyline with more blood and gore
have cutscenes where some people hate the spartans and show their bigotry towards them
and some were brutes and elites torture marines and civilians for information
have some marines that we can meet on a personal level on our sqaud that risk their lives to revive us when we are down instead of us respawning with no consequences
allow us to chose which spartan we play as
bring back the hardcore rock ballads during the epic fights
guns that sound real
scare the -blam!- out of us throw every curveball you've got to scare the sit out of us make brutes throw suicide runts at us jackals with some sort of primitive cameo sniping us from all directions
show these aliens as the monsters they were really meant to be
show me the dark side of war

Agreed - I miss the "WORTWORTWORT" from the elites in the original Halo, it always brought a smile to my face to hear that. I would really like to see the Covenant as the near impossible force even for the Spartans because that was how it was in the book and it was intense reading.

I really did love the marines in the original Halo aswell. You felt connected to them. Just like Foehammer's sacrifice at the end of the game. That brought a tear to my eye as I drove away. I love that compelling emotional gameplay.

Vancouver BC, Canada.

It would feel like a World War game, but it could be a neat feature if it wasn't too intense.

yes hehe oh god yes.. make this game hard and a challenge to beat even on easy... halo 3 legendary was like halo 1 heroic/normal

  • 07.20.2009 10:50 PM PDT

I assume that Reach will be closer to ODST than Halo 3, so you may have a bit of what you want, but i prefer my multicolored halo, instead of having every color from the dirt spectrum color wheel filling my screen like in gears of war.

  • 07.20.2009 10:53 PM PDT

@Helveck

Just an Average Joe...

Some solid ideas, but please leave the word "Hardcore" out of it... Its probably not the proper word to use, considering you'll then have kids going, "OMFG YEAH! IM SO HARDCORE BR'S ONLY!!!"

  • 07.20.2009 10:55 PM PDT

So you want visor affects added?(Like in Star Wars: Republic Commando) Sounds awesome.

  • 07.20.2009 11:01 PM PDT

Im agree with the OP. Deep wounds and slashes would be cool but no extreme gore. For color scheme Bungie needs to throw halo 3 out the window and play through H1 a few times.

It should be AT LEAST Halo CE's level of gore and blood, like

Elites being impaled through the ammo case spikes in 343 guilty spark

That fight with the hunter in the fairly small room in Silent Cartographer; when you were done you painted the walls orange

etcetc

  • 07.21.2009 12:50 AM PDT

I think the above suggestions will just be annoying and detract from actual gameplay.
