Subject: Cortana

You know that little voice that's in your head, always telling you where to go, what's around the corner, and the smart-ass remarks for whenever you did something wrong? If you know who it is, show some appreciation to the character, who is the best character in Halo, (IMO).

Just, post how you feel about Cortana as a character, and why she's important to the story to you.

Cortana is one of the main reasons why I liked Halo so much, especially in Halo:CE. She was very useful and with her you always felt safe. I remember on the levels 343 Guilty Spark and The Library I was always wondering, "What are they Cortana? Crap! You're not with me! Where are they? Help me out!" Wtihout her in my head, I never felt complete or safe. But when I got her back in Two Betrayles, I thought I was in heaven.

Halo 2, the game just didn't seem to rely on her as much and she never left.

But in the first 7 1/2 levels of Halo 3, I just wanted her to tell me where I was and I wanted to hear her funny remarks. When I got her back in 'Cortana', again, it felt like heaven, but more. It worked so well with the story, that its one of my favorite cinimatic in video game history.

EDIT: I'm talking mostly about her in Halo: CE, because that's where she shines, and never tones down.

-Sic transit gloria mundi

Well I like Cortana, I certainly did miss the points in the Halo saga in which she wasn't here. But, I'm not quite as... "attached" as you decribed. Remember shes not real.

I know, I'm just showing apreciation for a well thought out character. Its also why moments in Halo where you feel alone and then you finally get her back. The game made it feel great to have a talking voice in my head.

I have always thought that Cortana was an excellent A.I partner and it was kind of annoying not to have her in Halo3 until close to the end.

My thoughts exactly, but that changed a little bit of the gameplay experience for Halo 3.

Bungie pointed to the outfield wall on this one. You feel like you're not alone, and not in the cheesy Dominic Santiago way. She seems real. I had a quiet distrust of her when I first played, which worked perfectly with the Spark confrontation. I really didn't know whom to trust as the cutscene unfolded. Genius.
She is the postmodern love interest, soul of the series, watery eyed cutscene maker...
Woof...I need a cigarette.

I kind of know how you felt about the Cortana/Spark arguement, but for some reason, I knew Cortana was telling the truth.
The Master Chief will never be a true killing machine without Cortana.

Well, i like her body. And if she said some sexy stuff in my ear i would be happier. The halo 3 model was much hotter. But wasn't there most of the time.

In all seriousness she is a key part of the series.

Yes she is hot, but I'm also talking about her personality, the way she's used in the games.

I just thought of something. If Cortana was the one who gave you way points in the first two games (as the Master Chief), how did he get them in Halo 3?

Some can come away from reading "War and Peace" thinking it a simple adventure story, while others can read the ingredients on a gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe.

SHE IS THE KEY. Seriously. When shes in halo she downloads tons of info. Also she has MB inside of her (see the great scavenger hunt thread in thr hot topics of universe forum). Cortana holds the key to future halo games. Who knows what rest in her mind? Also she briefly taps into the last halo (via terminal and control room) which means she probably downloaded info from Arc. I can't stress it enough SHE IS THE KEY TO ALL. THE FATE OF HUMANITY LIES IN HER.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

cortana iz a tawtul haw-t

Anyway, I think that Cortana is a well thought out method of making sure the player doesn't get lost. Other than that, she's a good character I suppose, certainly is helpful.

One of the parts in Halo 3 when you realise you need cortana is when you are in high charity the 2nd time. I found that level hard as I fought off the flood and navigated around a ship without cortana to help me.

During the mission you also heard Cortana in pain (or something like that) and the Gravemind was being a (insert word of choice here).

There were some times when she was just annoying, stating the obvious..
"This cave is not a natural formation, someone built it, so it must lead somewhere"
No, really?
I thought the LCD lights were just grown!
How was that annoying? I know what it looks like, but stating the obvious isn't always annoying.

i wouldn't consider that stating the obvious though. True the observation was indeed futile however I wouldn't have known the cave was synthesized by sentient beings... would you have? ~Cm

All she said was "Someone built it." Isn't it obvious that a perfectly linear cave with lighting that always goes around in a perfect 90 degree angle wasn't just formed, but built?
It was a weird line. I still don't find it annoying.
