Every game of Standoff Heavy that I have ever played has led me to believe Gauss hog is an abomination to multiplayer balance.
Let me put it this way, would you ever get into a normal warthog if you could get into a gauss hog instead? The normal warthog was supposed to be anti-infantry, the gauss hog was supposed to be anti-vehicle, yet the gauss hog is better against infantry than the normal warthog is.
Why? If a gauss blast so much as grazes a player they will die instantly. Its like a combination of a sniper and a rocket launcher with infinite ammo and no reloading required.
The vehicle is like a tank, but its as fast as a warthog. On Sandtrap Heavy, I see people willingly abandoning their scorpion tanks just to get into a gauss hog. Its that powerful.
Aircraft? Doesn't stand a chance. Missle pods? A smart hog driver won't fall for such a predictable weapon.
It only appears on two maps in Halo 3 thankfully, but the many nightmares I've had with this weapon makes me wonder if it should return in Halo Reach.
Personally I think that a rocket hog would do better than a gauss hog with respect to multiplayer balance. Note that I never played Halo for the PC, so I've never actually see the original warthog variant in action, but the idea behind it makes sense. It fires powerful vehicle killing rockets that move slowly through the air, so that tanks and smaller vehicles that are heading straight at the hog die, but infantry and light vehicles will be able to see and dodge easily.
Hence, the vehicle fills it's intended role, without overlapping on the role of the normal warthog.
What do you guys think? Should the gauss hog return for Halo Reach? Should we have a rocket hog instead? Or do neither belong in the Multiplayer Sandbox?
