Subject: Will firefight last without a title update?

The universe is probably littered with the one-planet graves of cultures which made the sensible economic decision that there's no good reason to go into space--each discovered, studied, and remembered by the ones who made the irrational decision.

Currently firefight is built off of halo 3's co-op, meaning there is no matchmaking available for this new mode of play. This has been confirmed also by Bungie themselves. In order to round up a party for firefight, a player will have to have little brothers or sisters, or hope the people on his/her friend list want to play the same time they do. Which raises the question, will firefight last without some form of matchmaking down the road?

Firefight has been one of the big selling points Bungie has been using in order to promote ODST. Now I am sure when the game first gets released, this wont be an issue hence many people like myself will be renting the game, trying it out and everyone will be playing it. However what happens maybe a month or two down the road? What happens to the players who may be playing at 4am, and lil johnny and sally are asleep? Or most of a players friend list do not like firefight, even maybe went off to other games? Current games out there with similar survival modes like Halo's firefight compensate for this, by adding matchmaking and allowing random users to party up. I believe a title update will be needed at some point to allow users who don't have dedicated friends to play parts of this game they paid for. Worst case scenario, in a few months this turns into how zombies did for halo 2; where people would be mass messaging on the forums and to their recent players trying to gather people to play. So unless someone loves playing by themselves its an obstacle.

Great point. This may make is neccesary for players who want to play it, to post in the classifieds or in the ODST forums as they inveitably will.

Great point. This may cause a need for a place where people and find others who want to play adn invite them. Sort of like the custom games feature on the one website.

Edit: Sorry I keep on getting a weird pop up that says there was an error. I don't know why.

The name's Ian, Game Designer at Whisper Game Studios, very off-and-on Bungie.net visitor and avid Bungie fan overall. Message me if you wish.

A guaranteed no... If it does, I'll seriously shoot myself in the foot 7 times in 7 seconds. I promise you I will.

Yes, I think it Will last, because it's not just Co-op. Firefight has a singleplayer mode too. the only difference is it's harder and not as fun playing by yourself. Plus it doesn't need matchmaking! Basically all you do is pick a character and pick a map and go!

The problem is finding a party if a player wants one. They can obviously play with themselves if they wish, however survival modes are made more for co-op play with teams.

True, but COD 4 has no Co-op mode, and you don't see people crying about it, do you?

Halo 3: ODST is just an appetizer to keep you busy until Halo: Reach. Reach will most likely have Firefight with matchmaking.

I think this will last longer then people might think. I mean even without a full party people still play Horde mode on Gears of War don't they? and half the time people don't want to play with random "idiots" that won't listen or screw things up. In my opinion I think that firefight is going to last quite awhile.

Hopefully Arbiter. I would be angry if Halo Reach did not have a form of Firefight.

I am going to refute this a bit. While there are idiots in any game one plays, that isnt always the case. Right now I only play Gears2 for the Horde mode, the mechanics of competitive play are too bugged to get any joy in that game. No one on my friend list plays horde, but I can 9/10 times get into a game where everyone is having a blast. Also if there is no FF, the idiot cant do too much harm.
